What you've just demonstrated is how not to have a healthy discussion on things, you've turned a simple innocent argument into something personal, and that is not good. What I want to make clear is that I do not have anything against you, or your opinion.

My final point that I'm going to bring out, that evidently was not clear in my other posts, is that what Taylor Swift said makes her look good, not bad, and she's not getting grief for what she did, she's getting praise. I believe what you said didn't need to be said, because it had already been said before. What did need to be said however was that Taylor Swift did what she did with herself in mind. Did it benefit other musicains? Sure, but what she did not only helped her make more money, but it also made her look good, so to say that she did it selflessly and that it had a negative effect on her isn't entirely logical.

Now, unless you have new, valid, and logical points to make that are going to bring something to this conversation, I'd rather not continue having this conversation, otherwise I'm willing to talk about it.

The reason why I say certain things is because to me they need saying, whether they can be "used against me" as you say here or not and I don't believe that Taylor was looking out for herself or the message that she wrote would have been all about her, but it wasn't. It was about those who were going to take the hardest hit and no, what she said is not what any artist would have said because there are some out there who wouldn't have cared enough about the other impacted people in order to actually say something about them in their defense. And the last thing that you say in your message here, to me, is most likely the main reason why not enough good is said and done anymore. People get too scared about what is going to be said in response to whatever it is that they would like to do or say. Well that right there is another reason why Taylor can't be praised enough. I am sure that its a safe bet that she knew that people would say that she only came forward the way that she came forward because of how good that it would make her look in return, but she didn't let that stop her from doing and saying what she knew in her heart was the right thing to do and say. Let me guess. That is another reason why you have given her this much grief and now of course, me this much grief. Was just reading that Swift has agreed to stream 1989 on Apple Music. During it's 3 week free trial Apple Music will be paying artists $0.002 per stream. According to numbers i've seen, Spotify pays between $0.006 and $0.0084 per stream. So it appears Swift has really brought home the bacon with a major victory for artists vs streaming services.

Not exactly sure what the no was in response to. I agree with you in regards to everything you said.

I think some get confused into thinking that distributing through Spotify, Pandora or similar is somehow not the choice of the artist. But ultimately the artists are signing into an agreement with these services, and it's up to them to do the research in regards to pay %s. (Yes, I know labels are the ones taking care of this for most artists, but artists sign contracts to be on labels, so they're still indirectly responsible).

Artists have almost zero control over bit torrents and file sharing, which is why you're very often going against the artists wishes when illegally downloading a record. While Spotify may only make that artist pennies more than the illegal download, the artist at least made the choice to distribute via Spotify.

But, as I was saying earlier, if you remove the cheap and illegal methods of acquiring music, many many artists would be far less known. So in a lot of ways, the internet age has forced artists to trade hopes of financial success/stability for popularity and the greater ability to be heard. Is that a fair trade? It really depends on who you ask.

A lot is said about how artists deserve to be paid for their work. It's true. But we're still trying to calculate that value. And in reality, without the internet, most artists wouldn't be selling records anyway, because they'd have far less of a chance of reaching their potential fanbase, except through rigorous touring.

...or at least that must be what the artists believe, otherwise they'd never sign with record companies who pay them a pittance per record sale, stream, etc. The problem comes from the cognitive dissonance experienced by the listener when they realize that the thing they thought was valuable, the music, is worth next to nothing compared to the machinery that brought it to their attention.

The internet has made the above a bit less true, what with the network of blogs providing free advertising to small and independent artists, but the best exposure still comes at a very steep cost.

Well you know that argument can be used against you right? You say that I don't personally know her therefore I can't say she did it for personal gain, but you don't know her personally either so you can't say she did it for musicians. I do agree that either way it was beneficial, but don't make Taylor out be some sort of godsend, someone else would have probably done so if she hadn't. If I wasn't getting paid for my services, I would take them down, simple as that. Artists aren't being forced against their will to have their music on Apple's services. I'm not saying Taylor Swift is a bad person, and I have nothing against her, but saying that anyone that makes as much as her or is high up in the industry does anything for anything but personal gain is nothing but naive.
