I could give a long argument, even a dissertation about what makes them great, but I'm not going to sway the JD heads. They are on too high of a pedestal. Who is actually on the fence about this vote? It's an interesting matchup. Both bands are from the same era with JD preceding R.E.M. by a couple of years. JD carries the flag of the post punk movement and R.E.M. are the godfathers of the indie and alternative movement that came in its wake.

As far as influence goes though, basically, if you like an alternative or indie rock melodic-guitar band,. chances are, that band owes a huge debt to R.E.M. Joy Division are probably equally influential in terms of influencing an aesthetic in music, but they've never been my cup of tea.

To me it's a choice between darkness and light, a choice between winter and spring. All I've ever heard is darkness in Joy Division's sound, whereas R.E.M. music is often full of light. It can be dark, but there's always a sense of hope and optimism there that I don't hear in JD. The two bands exhibit two very different aesthetics. I prefer jangely guitar, images of trains going by in the country, and golden fields of wheat, to droney bass, synth, and the industrial decay of the urban landscape. When I live in the city, I don't want my music to sound like that. I want it to take me somewhere else. It's a choice of colors. It's a choice of imagery, and it's a choice of whose music you really identify with. As I've alluded to, I'll take light over darkness any day of the week. :mrgreen:

wow! I'm starting to second guess my original vote. the idea of music taking you somewhere else is an interesting point. oh well. Also Shankly did you hear my Flaming Lips/Stevie Wonder mashup? I think that was my best one but I don't think anyone heard it.

No, I'm just being biased. I haven't listened to REM for 15 years, whereas I've heard Joy Division every month for over a decade. It's just my taste!
