I can't do a top 10 artists. I've been coming to this thread for a week and trying to type it up. It's basically impossible. There's "all time favorite artists who have influenced my life over the years, whom I've read countless books about and owned their t-shirt until the picture wore off" and there's "badass indy bands I learned about on BEA and listen to more than anything lately even though I couldn't tell you the name of a single band member." How do I rank them? It's impossible. My top 3 are Nick Cave, Bob Dylan and The Velvet Underground, although I'm not sure if that's the right order. The Beatles are probably number 4. After that it's a total crap shoot between a solid 20 artists of all genres and eras.

You have to separate the artist from the art. Regardless how egotistical Kanye is (and he is, he's a dick), he can still be considered talented. Personally, I find his music to be very unique and well-crafted, he's not afraid to do something really different and brings a lot of different styles to the mainstream because of his popularity. Yeezus was really different than just about anything a "mainstream" hip-hop musician was putting out. I find his music to be engaging and ambitious, I think his lyrics are clever and his production is top-notch.

But that's my opinion, Kanye is a pretty divisive artist, a lot of people here hate the guy. Though I would say not calling him a "musician" is dumb, as that is what he technically is, whether you like him or not.

The second step is listen to maybe 10 of his interviews during morning radio shows in new york or wherever

haven't updated my chart lately so forgive disjunctions. kind of a bad list now that i've done it but bleh. also, in case you're curious, standard was how often i listen to the artist and how well i distribute my time across multiple albums, so someone like VDP, despite making my favorite album, doesn't get on the list 'cause he hasn't made a single other album i spend any amount of time on. obviously, some folks like BWJ only have the one "album" but it's their entire output, soo
