Recently invested in a single large unit that holds over 1000 (including all the different non-standard sizes), housing my entire collection and leaving a bit of room for a few years of additions.

Everything was wonderful for about 2 weeks - until my 16-month old son got into it and started breaking the cases. I have since relocated the bottom few hundred to one of my old storage units positioned ungainly on my desk, and it all looks a bit silly.

i have a few of those cd wallet/books for the discs. the jewels are in boxes in the attic. i have too many hundreds of them. should probably just sell what i can. at least half of my collection is stuff i'm no longer interested in.

As a college student, I literally just have a drawer that I stuff CDs in.

Also, there's no organization. I'll edit with a pic in a moment.

Hmm ... that sounds like an idea that saves time in terms of organizing them but uses more space in terms of storing them.
So if you want to replace a CD that is in the player you just choose one to take out and switch the post-it note from one jewel box to the other.
The thing that would bother me about that (given my OCD) is that if I wanted to listen to several albums in a row from one artist in the order they released them - I couldn't be lazy and just select/play the first one knowing the next one would start right after it.
if they are not in order in the CD player you would have to keep finding the next post-it note and then selecting the next slot. Assuming I interpreted what you said correctly.
I only point this out because it is pretty common for me to listen to 2 or 3 albums in a row by the same artist.

I only do a major update of the CDs in the players and the list once or twice a year to preclude having to move the discs too frequently or having to resort the CD inserts in the cases all that often.
With a remote and the spreadsheet I can listen to any of 799 CDs without having to touch a jewel box 😄 In order to reduce wear on the CD players (since they no longer make them) - I only use it for listening to full albums, undisturbed. Otherwise, I use Sonos (any time i get a new CD I burn it in Apple Lossless format and stick on my NAS so I can play it on Sonos). In the CD player the CDs are arranged alphabetically by Artist and by release date within each artist.

I second this. The great thing about CDs is that these bookshelves don't take nearly as much space.

I have one like this. Ordered it online for about $100 a few years ago. They cost more now, but they have a lot of different sizes, and they take up a whole wall...but the rest of the house is free from CD's. Mine holds well over 1500 cd's...I'm going to be getting another one soon, because the stuff not on the shelf is not in good order and mine is completely full. Google "CD Shelves", and you'll find plenty of wall units.

As for organizing...mine are alphabetical by artist (last name for solo artists), and chronological within each artist. It helps to enter your collection onto an excel spreadsheet, then sort it by artist name first, then year of release.

I'll admit that I have all my CDs in binders, and just use the cases for decoration and reading. I have them organized by artist obv, but I have my "Charlie's Choice" CDs set apart in their own area.

I have no idea how to organize my CDs. I used to use these little storage bins that were meant to hold about 28 CDs/box, but they are starting to fill up so much room.

How do you all organize your CDs?
