Sure one of the best of its decade. But nowhere near greatest ever. It's just not original enough for one thing. It's pretty. That's the most important thing about it. Listen to Bitte Orca. Now that's a remarkable record. Much more interesting than Funeral. Just as an example.

This still goes hard, deserves its acclaim. Maybe not top 10 worthy but it's one of the best rock LPs of the 00ss, Laika and Power Out bump.

Albums like this very likely had some influence on Arcade Fire, but I think Funeral would have been a success either way.

Musically...creative. It's really a symphony of sound, and started a whole trend of making it cool to use orchestral instruments in rock music again. Songs are in many different styles.

Lyrically...revolutionary. What rock album wrote four songs about neighborhoods and the cute things that happen there? I'm a city planner by trade, and place-based planning, transit-oriented development, "new urbanism" and the like have taken over planning practice...and whenever I hear about that, the first piece of music I think about is "Funeral" (maybe supplemented by "No Cars Go")

I'm not even sure if this is a musical masterpiece but it's a cultural one...almost closer to "Thriller" than to "Dark Side of the Moon", if you know what I'm saying.

I find The Suburbs to be more relate-able, but Funeral is just beautiful. Gorgeous if you will.

That's definitely true. But, since significance is a trait dependant on specific styles, I feel it's safe to say Funeral is significant without the "within indie rock" disclaimer, because that seems implied.

Oh snap.

I don't think there's really anything shocking or overblown about Holden's comment, he didn't even say it's one of the best albums, just that it's one of the most significant. The quality of an album is a subjective debate, but there's a little more objectivity in significance. And given how frequently everyone brings this album up when discussing the last 20 years of music, it seems obvious that it's significance is huge.

I'll go ahead and make the big subjective comment by saying that Funeral is not only one of the most significant albums ever made, but also one of the best. I think it's somewhere around the early 20's on my overall chart.
