So I've been waiting for the BEAMAs to finish presenting but at this point, I think if this idea has any chance of moving forward, I should get started on it soon, yeah?

Alright, I've decided to keep this seperate from the BEAMAS at least for the first one, just because there's so many ballots happening all at once this time of year, and I've got to keep track of too much else atm. Expect it in march to avoid the User awards, the Pazz and Jop thing, BEAMAs, etc.

Really, there's no such thing as a community that can please everyone. BEA is mostly a very accepting place, but there are definitely bands and tastes that take flak on the forums. You gotta be able to get past that, though. We all have favorites that are uncool and while some will choose to hide that fact, I find it's more fun to just carry your tastes with pride. If you can't take other people criticizing your favorite artists/albums, you probably shouldn't be on an internet forum at all.

The other point of view that will struggle here is someone who thinks there is a "correct" set of tastes. The musical community is no longer held together by a single mainstream critical perspective, so if you think the Beatles are objectively the best band of all time, this won't be a great place to hang out.

I think that on BEA, it doesn't matter what music you like, it just matters how open you are to what others think about it... positive or negative.

Trust me on BEA I haven't heard any death threats or getting called a fag*ot because I liked or disliked a certain band. That's hardly uncommon elsewhere. And what music this site tends to favor goes in cycle, like elsewhere. There are veteran users who can speak with more authority on this, but I heard back several years ago this site was much more exclusively RS500-heavy, and charts that deviated from that formula would often get downvoted. So perhaps BEA just kind of moved way from that music as it got older and now some of those might be considered too "un-hip" by some overzealous users, but for the most part I think we're all pretty tolerant of varying styles as we tend to have a wide variety of different music-listening personalities overall. I mean I even gave Jhereko's chart a good grade and he had the new fucking Coldplay 😜 (<3 you're The Realest).

I donno, if you think the community's too "exclusive" actually try to change that and engage with other users here, defend your tastes if a few users tend to thumb their nose at it and actually try to start discussions about all the different type of music out there and why you're favorite albums are just as worthy of praise as other, more universally-liked BEA albums of the moment. Don't just play the victim or say it's everyone else's fault.

Look at Necharsian. He has bubblegum pop in his top 30, and everyone loves him. Same with Precedent. BEA is an extremely open forum, but part of what makes it open is that everyone has something unique to share.

How many people have made fun of JO for her obsession with James in the last couple of months even? Bringing up old news doesn't make sense. And you're lying to yourself if you think anyone could make a thread about a single artist and constantly post about it and not get comments on it. If Kid A started a thread about Radiohead you can bet people would be commenting derisively on that.

That's what happens on a forum you comment on each others opinions, on each others behaviour and on each others words. Otherwise we'd just be here ignoring each other posting mindlessly about albums so as to not affect anyone else - what the fuck is the point of that?

Few years ago I was one of the few who championed pop. It wasn't accepted as a viable music genre on here and Top 40 was frowned upon. It still is to an extent but that doesn't stop me or others from declaring our love for something or putting it on our charts. People take comments on their musical taste WAY too seriously and way too personally. If you're so insecure you can;t take someone calling your taste 'dadrock' you probably shouldn't be on the internet because if you've had any experience with any other corner of the internet you would know that this place by comparison is a downright utopia of human harmony. We have hardcore hip hop purists, noise junkies, metal heads, prog dawgs, pop lovers, classical aficionados all in one place all discussing music. You can not overestimate or overemphasize how incredible that is. It also means you get exposure to all sorts of music rather than locking yourself into one. Sure sometimes things get heated but that doesn't mean you spit the dummy and say I can't play with everyone because the problem with all the other people, not me. That's delusion.

I don't particularly like Mark Kozelek's last album and a lot of people do, does that mean I stop interacting??? This is basic human interaction (also I can't remember ever discussing Kozelek's B-Sides).

You know hard it is liking Coldplay on a music forum? 🤣 But who cares? There are people on here I adore who love U2 and know that I hate them and yet we still are great friends.

Exclusion and inclusion are concepts in your head, you can feel as welcome or unwelcome as you choose to be. Your taste is not nearly as important a factor in how you get along here when compared with how you speak to other people. If you position yourself as an outsider an outsider you will be. Simple.
