Great album. The Beasties had novelty act written all over them before this and I'm still amazed they reached the heights they did.
Just to be clear, I wasn't implying that you disliked them due to racial politics. That was only a response to Applerill's misguided post.

You're free to dislike whatever.

I will say that the Beastie Boys, like a lot of earlier hip hop has been overshadowed over time as the genre seemingly continues to get better. What they once did that sounded fresh doesn't really sound the same in the context of the present. I still love Paul's Boutique though.

Surprised (but not really) by some of the haters. Paul's Boutique is a landmark release for hip hop. The Beasties may have been given opportunities darker skinned rappers never would have had, but they never squandered those opportunities, and never attempted to hijack the genre. And I'm not sure an appropriation argument can really be made. They were New Yorkers and hip hop originated in their world.

"Music was very important to me growing up. Classic hip-hop like Run-DMC, Public Enemy, and especially the Beastie Boys were all I used to listen to for years, and It's a great thing they call it a hip-hop "beef" rather than a pork because otherwise these guys might never have started rapping, and my mom certainly wouldn't have let me listen"
Ooh, I like that quote. You really are right, especially on this shockingly-non-rock album. I stand corrected (at least on the aesthetic similarity front).

....No, asking the question is making a stupid liberal hypocrisy joke. (I really don't have any social problem with them, even if it sometimes feels convenient to say I do)

Yeah, the Beasties are obviously super-important to the history of hip-hop, but they're vocal style is just nails on a chalkboard to me. Significant Other actually sounds a lot more like old-school hip-hop than Paul's Boutique does, with just the right amount of rock influence to mix things up.

Didnt pick this up until late 90s. I don't think it set the world on fire when it was released like other classic hop hop albums may have, even though it had good reviews at the time. People, including myself, maybe looked at them as old hat by then. Also everybody was into with either 3 feet high or Staight Outta Compton, or both. Just looked to see where NME had it in the end of year list. It's at 11 behind wonderstuff, Maria McKee and Neville brothers albums 🙄
Very fair and somewhat agree. Paul's Boutique is not even my favorite 1989 NYC hip-hop record with white emcees. Would recommend instead:

Actually, now that I think about it, it almost certainly isn't. Maybe my apathy is because I've only listened to it on first/run 1989 CD instead of a remaster.

Edit: Listening to the remaster, and I think I just don't like the vocal style of the Beasties in general. It reminds me of how Weird Al made fun of them with thatb"Twister" song. It just sounds so buffoonish to me.
