dihansse wrote:

Although I'm fairly new to BEA, I have already rated 1580 albums (and counting) with an average of 76.

My general rating scale for albums is:
95-100: outstanding
90: Excellent
80-85: very good
70-75: good
60-65: average
50-55: below average
I don't tend to rate albums below 50 and of course there is a bias towards my favorites if not because I only rate albums in my collection and even in my selection I only rate albums where there are at least a few good tracks on it.

But now I come to what is in fact a new topic but I'd like to introduce it here anyway. The scale above is not sufficient to rank my top albums, top decade albums, top year albums and custom charts so I tried to find a system that allowed me to do a fast ranking which is based on the individual tracks on an album.
The point is, I have been scoring the individual tracks on my itunes collection already for a long time so I use these points to give scores to albums:
5: absolute top songs (about 1000 songs; I know it's a lot but I have a wide ranging taste)
4: very good
3: good
2: average
1: below average
This approximately coincides with the above albums scores.

and then I convert these Itunes scores like this:
5 converts in 5
4 converts in 3
3 converts in 1
2 and below: no score

And then I add these up per album where I put a limit at 13 tracks (not to give advantage to the albums with very many short tracks). For long songs (at least 10 minutes), I tend to double the score of that track (this not to disadvantage albums with few long tracks).
I use this kind of scoring for the moment (but I'm not quite finished yet) to sort my different lists and of course when I'm finished with that I'm gonna reshuffle a bit because this scoring shouldn't be the unique way to sort my albums: there is also the overall quality of the album on top of the quality of each individual track, there is the variety of music in the album, etc.
My current top list isn't sorted that way yet (currently it's even a bit chronological so I'm currently building a custom top list based on above system.

Yes, I like this.

Yes SethMadsen, but this doesn't allow a big difference between the good en great albums. To score my album tracks I use my scores I use on Itunes (which also go from 1 to 5 stars) and I convert the 5 stars into a score of 5, a 4 stars into a score of 3 and a 3 stars into a score of 1 and below that 0. I think that allows me better between great and good (and average and bad don't count at all).

You know... I started thinking about this and a lot of us are rating it like a grade... like a percent. That means a 3 star is failing... that then means that we have a pretty small range of average vs good vs great.

I wonder what this site would look like if they rated it on stars...

So something like this... an average album would then would be a 50-60 (3 stars) though, and I think because we are looking at it almost like a percent (assuming "we" are doing this because usually 50 usually means bad because that's typically failing)

5 Best Ever
4 Good
3 Average
2 Below Average
1 Terrible

I hope that makes sense... my writing is terrible.

100- Top 15-20 albums of all time.
95- Strong contender for "legendary" status...may eventually grow to be an 100.
90- Too impressive to be an 85 but not quite on the same plane as the 95-100s in terms of significance.
85- Anything ranging from above average to Top 100 worthy.

I do not generally give albums anything below an 85...This is largely because I do not make an active effort to listen to poorly done music and enjoy most everything I have the opportunity to seek out. If something below an 85 is given, the album likely was so terrible that it upset me in some way.

I also feel sorta awful for labelling somebody's artwork "bad" or "mediocre" just because I as an individual did not appreciate it so my ratings tend to skew upward.

60 to 84: Don't necessarily like, but respectable to average
50 to 59: Dislike but can see how it deserves some respect.
49 and below: needs to die in a fire
85-100 if I love it, 60 to 85 if it's ok and if I dislike, but seem some merit anywhere between 10 and 60.

100s are perfect, I've given out around a dozen of these
90-99 are masterpieces
80-89 is great, I'll probably buy it and listen to it a bunch
70-79 is very good, but probably has some pretty notable flaws
60-69 is good, but I probably wont listen more than once
50-59 is just sort of there, not good, but not bad
00-49 is all varying levels of bad, I don't rate albums like this very often, because I usually wont listen to the whole thing.

My ratings on here are skewed up a little, because I usually round up to the nearest 5

100- I love this album. Not every track has to be "perfect", but the album has to move me in a uniquely identifiable way (got about thirty of these)

90-95- Excellent album, little to criticize other than I just happen not to love it as much as the 100s.

85- Almost an excellent album, but either is too long, or has tracks I'm not too fond of, or otherwise is lacking in execution, rather than in scope of idea.

75/80- A great album, though not as revolutionary a concept or sonwriting as anything higher.

65/70- Better than an average album, clearly so, though certainly not something I will gush about, and often imperfect even at that.

55/60- It's got a good track or two that stands out.

50- "Average" Nothing special, but nothing bad either.

35-45- Dissappointing in some demonstrable way, but not disregard able.

20-30- A bad album, maybe one or two tracks that could pass for average but the rest filler and bad.

10-15- ugh

0-5- Reserved for albums that have crippled my brain or the progress of music. Currently I have four: Black Eyed Peas "THE END", Taylor Swift "1989", Scott Stapp "The Great Divide", Nickelback "No Fixed Address"

I guess this is my curve, but I can't say I follow these rating verbatim.

100/100 = Sheer perfection. Every moment on this album is just as perfect as the next. I love every track, regardless of it being a short interlude or a skit, and have no desire to skip a track since they are all so perfect. Plus, it all comes together perfectly. Not a collection of songs. A perfect, cohesive album. (Only rated 9 of them and the Tremolo EP by My Bloody Valentine). These albums typically have strong memories attached to them and/or I find a lot of relevance to them.
The perfect scores (as of now): MBDTF, GKMC, Take Care, Loveless, TPAB, The Soft Bulletin, Kid A, Mellon Collie, and Doris.

95/100 = Depending on the number of tracks for the album, only one or two tracks I am not so thrilled with. If it contains less track listing, but lengthier songs, then there are moments on those individual songs I don;t find as interesting. Album still feels perfectly cohesive. Some memories are tied to these albums (but are not a requirement).

90/100 = Still about 1 or 2 tracks I am not thrilled with. Either too lengthy or too short of an album, but not too much where it does any serious damage to the album. Still very cohesive. Memories are attached to a few tracks.

85/100 = 3 or less tracks I am not thrilled with (depending on number of tracks). Either too lengthy or too short, but, again, doesn't seriously take away any enjoyment. Cohesive. Memories are attached to a few tracks.

80/100 = 3 or less tracks, again (depending on number of tracks). Length becomes a bit more of an issue. Cohesive still. Memories are attached to a track, maybe.

Everything 80/100 or above I do end up listening to again at some point.

75/100 = Maybe starting to lose cohesiveness; retains most. Depending on number of tracks, about 4 or 5 eh tracks.

70/100 = Same thing as 75/100, but just feels less. Redundancy can be a factor, too.

65-60/100 = Overall okay of an album. Maybe relisten to it later to see if anything changes. I consider this as "average" (which contradicts my "average rating" of about 75/100...).

55-50/100 = I like half the album. Or, there is quality of the album throughout the length I don't like (for example, I may not like the sound of a singer's voice, or the raw quality of the recording). Probably the lowest rating where I will give a relisten.

Everything below here I actively try to avoid these types of albums, but once in a while they slip through my listens.

45-40/100 = Not a good at all album. Could always be worse. May have one good track out of the entire group.

35-30/100 = Bad album overall. Still could be worse. May like a particular moment or two in the album.

25-20/100 = This is getting really really really bad.

15-10/100 = Terrible, but at least I know what type of music I don't want to listen to.

5-0/100 = I finish this album feeling pissed off at the fact that I wasted precious minutes of my life where I could've done something productive or listen to something even barely better to such an abomination and got nothing out of it. I was definitely more generous with this score when I first joined the sight, being immature by automatically rating JBiebs albums as 5/100, but I really haven't touched it since I've taken ratings more seriously and avoid albums I know I won't like.

When it comes to tracks, I am really bad at rating them. I am very generous with the 100/100's and usually end up rating tracks I don't like a 70/100 or 65/100 for whatever reason. I would've preferred a thumbs up or down rating for tracks, but that's just me.

                          From my RYM description:
5.0 - absolute favourites, the toonz I couldn't live without
4.5 - favourites, frequent plays/huge personal value
4.0 - fantastic releases, no necessary personal value
3.5 - really good
3.0 - just good
2.5 - indifferent
2.0 - mediocre
1.5 - poor
1.0 - really bad
0.5 - the bane of my existence

In this situation 5.0 = 100, 4.5 = 90, etc. I use a 10-point scale here too. Never seem to understand how you could distinguish with a 20-point but that's just me. My RYM scale doesn't completely translate because I amended it a little to suit my ratings more but didn't change it on BEA. Imagine there's another arbitrary dislike category thrown in and 5.0 and 4.5 are merged. Most of my 100s generally fit into 5.0 or 4.5, most of my 90s are 4.0, etc etc

Like it says in my bio, I grade albums and songs like school grades. So
100 - 90: A. Amazing album, makes my top 50 of all time.
80 - 85: B. Great album. I'll buy it, but it still could be better.
70 - 75: C. Pretty good. I might buy it, and if it's critically acclaimed, I'll listen again to see if I change my mind.
60 - 65: D. I didn't really like it. Generally, I get why people would like it, but it doesn't do it for me.
50 - 55: D-. I don't see why people like it. Not impressed at all.
<50: F. I rarely give grades lower than 60, let alone 50, so this is only for things I really hate.

Yeah it's different than a lot of people who have commented on here and who rate stuff on here, but that's just the way I rate, and it's too late to change it now cause I'd have to change every thing I've rated and that would just be annoying. It'd be cool if there was a thing like Goodreads has where under each star there's a thing that says, for example: Loved it; Liked it; It was alright; and stuff like that so we were all on the same page. Cause it's weird when I find a 60 rating and a comment saying it's a good album. Like that goes against everything I know, but I just have to get used to everyone having different ways of rating.

Not a way to mass rate easily as far as I know. Once you get past that mundane task RYM's so so good

Hover to the right of where the genres are and there's a super secret button 😉

                          anything but rym:

0-60 - varying levels of bad/mediocre
61-70 - alright
71-80 - enjoyable, but nothing i see myself returning to
81-85 - good/very good
86-87 - top 1500-2000
88-90 - top 1000
91-95 - top 200
96-100 - top 100

rym scale is different as i use it to recommend things to people more, but this is what i have on there:

0.5: nah bruh
1.0: below average
1.5: okay
2.0: decent
2.5: good
3.0: very good
3.5: great
4.0: love
4.5: incredible
5.0: goat

I'm a boring bastard, I usually judge what percentage of an album I like (i.e. an album with 12 tracks that I like 10 from will get 85) I then take 15 away so in that case this album would be 70 (funnily enough my average rating). I may add more or less depending on how I feel when rating.

Anything 85 and above is iPod worthy (how I will judge this when I run out of space on my iPod who knows but that's not likely to happen any time soon). Anything below 60 isn't worth bothering with.

Everything higher than 60 i consider a "good" album, obviously the closer to 100 the rating is, the better the album is.

Most albums higher than 85 make my chart.

Ive only ever given two 100s and to be honest they are the 2 ratings I have always felt 100% confident in, i find myself always changing my other ratings.

60 is the cut off point from being "average" to "good"

Anything lower than around 30/35 is usually pretty bad and I tend not to bother listening to those albums again, although most of the time I give these albums a second chance especially if they are pretty popular because i end up feeling like im missing something.

The lowest rating ive given is 30 (i think?).

I almost see it as a grading system
A* (lol UK grades) - 100
A - 90/95
B - 80/85
C - 70/75
D - 60/65
E - 50/55
F - Anything lower than 50 but higher than 20
U - Anything lower than 20

Reading back over this post, I have just talked a lot of shit but I've never been good with wording things so fuck it.
