According to my ratings I've heard 9 Bowie albums and it goes like this.

1: Station To Station
2: Low
3: The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust
4: Aladdin Sane
5: Hunky Dory
6: The Next Day
7: Let's Dance
8: Young Americans
9: Heroes (not a fan)

Not heard Blackstar, might get round to it sometime but not hugely interested in doing so. Bowie's one of those artists who I thinks alright and has done some great, even amazing stuff, but I'm no huge fan or anything.

1. Low
2. Ziggy Stardust
3. Hunky Dory
4. Station to Station
5. Blackstar

Low is so good because of its ties to Eno and his mildly disturbing but brilliant The Man Who Fell to Earth.

I realize this album is considered #1 on Pitchfork's Best Albums of the 1970s, and I am probably overly influenced by that chart. Still, what he was doing on that album was so unlike anything that had come before, and probably anything that came after for a while.

Station to Station gets a close second, but is slightly less coherent and listenable so gets a couple ticks against it.[/i]

I can't speak for everyone, but I think Ziggy is just a very unique production in terms of writing, performance, and concept. A ton of great songs on it. It's not my absolute favorite album, but there is a reason why it is #18 on our overall chart.

David Bowie more often than not seems to represent "the future of music". Ironically, in terms of actual favourite albums, I prefer his more nostalgic-sounding ones these days. Hunky Dory especially sounds like granny music written by a 20-something with a subtle David Bowie-weirdness to it. My current favourites go something like:

1. Hunky Dory
2. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust...
3. Diamond Dogs

and then maybe The Man Who Sold the World only because I listened to it the first time a month ago, idk, his music and vocal style just had more charm and innocence when he was younger, even when he did borderline heavy metal. Probably followed by Aladdin Sane, Low, etc. but who cares at this point, right? Generally good stuff all his albums (maybe and only maybe except some of the ones I still haven't listened to, including his new album).
