My memory is a bit fuzzy, and a bulk of these artists remained favorites from the point I first heard them, some have faded, others took time for me to appreciate.

Early Childhood [1982-1990]
Pretty much the things being played around the house by my parents and 2 older brothers that I enjoyed the most

My oldest brother turned me on to The Pixies, Fugazi (a band I head heard years earlier and didn't get at all), My Bloody Valentine, Wilco, etc. Then came Napster. I started downloading music by bands I was interested in but never had much access to previously. Suddenly I was tapping into Sleater Kinney, The Smiths, Radiohead, The Cure, and Modest Mouse.

Napster with a dial-up was limiting. You'd wait hours to find out the song you downloaded was a bullshit copy, or an entirely different song. College provided greater access and friends with more diverse tastes. Indie rock was blowing up, and living in NYC provided incredible access to the live performances. By my final year I was working at a major indie music publication.

And that's a great question with Hendrix (in particular). I think you can lump him in with guys like Miles and the Beatles because even though his body of work is relatively small, the catalog is so prolific with many legendary tracks and moments and has stood the test of time for nearly 50 years. Also, Jimi influenced a fuck ton of players and continues to do so today. Kendrick Lamar will be there one day too, but because he's still living and only has 3 records out, so not just yet. A favorite? Obviously. But not an "all time great" yet if that's the term you want to use.

Then in high school it was Zeppelin/Floyd/Queen. Then Bob Dylan post-high school. Then for a brief period it was Stevie Wonder and/or Neil Young. Then the Velvet Underground.
