Regardless of the year confusion, I found it interesting on the first two listens. There's something simple yet obsessive in her singing that gives it a sort of tribal quality, and I frequently thought of African music while listening to her vocal lines, although I also heard a bit of pre-recording era blues in some tracks, notably in Ee Che, which has probably been my favourite so far.

The lengthy last two tracks are a different story. The screeching and hissing that supposedly imitates sirens singing (I guess), and looped whispers are possibly more complex and vocally adventurous, but somehow less enjoyable for me.

Overall, not a bad choice. I'll definitely get back to it, thanks.

I see why from your perspective you did it, but being belittled about my perspective on the last page seems kind of shitty to me which has almost turned me off from ALC right now. With that said, I liked the album but I didn’t really enjoy the ideas expressed too much— worth a listen, hope to like it more on repeats.

I'll be honest, I didn't think it was that big of a deal, but if it is, I apologize. It had seemed to me that most music publications that have reviewed this album considered it to be a 2016 release and so I went with that, my apologies if that was misguided.

I get where he's coming from because this is basically an expanded reissue of an older release. And I think further discussion of what sorts of archival/reissued releases would be allowed for this would be good to clear up in the main ALC thread. But since this thread exists and this album is pretty great I think we should spend the rest of it talking about the album.

But for the sake of me continuing to be pedantic: I consider a 2016 release to be something made for 2016, no reissues... no remasters... etc. I will still listen and like to be aware of reissues/remasters, but I will not consider them 2016 releases and in a discussion about music of 2016 it should pertain to music of 2016.
Am I making any sense?

You're not being pedantic enough. It is indeed a 2016 release by definition that it was released in 2016. You're confusing date of release with date of creation.

If a band records an album in late 2013, and then takes a while to find a record label, press vinyl copies, etc, and the release ends up not coming out until 2016, is it still a 2016 release in your eyes?

Is it the original release of the art? Yes.

I go by how RYM and IMDB-like sites define year of release for film.

It's also highly unlikely that whatever weird outsider cassette tape s getting pieced together somewhere right now in 2016 is gonna get exposure in these threads. I welcome the variety of styles that get opened up if we let reissues of music we're unlikely to have heard to step in once in awhile. Ben Zimmerman's compilation was one of my highlights of last year, and I would have been more than happy to get exposed to that in one of these threads.
Why? Because it happens to be obscure comparatively?

Yes, that's precisely the reason. Many reissues barely even existed in their previous life. The point of reissues like this is to bring light to something that never got the chance the first time around. The point of other reissues (like a remaster of a Beatles record) is to make a buck.

Here's an example for you:

Thumbnail. Click to enlarge.

Trotro by DJ Katapila

This record has essentially existed on a tape somewhere in Ghana for a while now, but only a handful of people ever heard it before Awesome Tapes released it this year.

I'm simply interested in finding music I like. What year it technically came out matters none.

Why? Because it happens to be obscure comparatively? I think that's a bit of a leap and unfair to actual LP's created for 2016. But again, I'm just being pedantic apparently.

So any artist can remaster/rerecord the majority of their album from 30 years ago and slap two new songs on the end of it and its considered a new release?
C'mon. That's utter nonsense.

Technically, it's probably best described as a reissue with bonus material, but since it's not super well known and the reissue came out in 2016, I have zero problem with this being considered a 2016 release for the sake of ALC16.

If it were something like a Zeppelin reissue, that'd obviously be a different story.
