Well, I posted on the first page and sort of took a break from BEA—and I come back to, well, this. There’s a lot I disagree with from the onset, a lot of things said I really oppose (as a listener and a creator of music), but a lot of this seemed like harmless introspection about the bigger hits of the era with some exceptions. I wonder if Seth ever got to reading the charts I posted on the first page and used them?

100% agreed. Hope we get back on the discussion track once the dust settles :)

I also enjoyed our discussions. It was the first time I felt I actually connected with someone online and communicated between two beings. There was some kind of mutual connection instead of miscommunication/etc.

"Shades of Time" (80)
I get a bit of a Cream feel vocally from this.

"Savor (instrumental)" (80)
Love the layers of rhythm. It tickles my brain and gets my soul riled up. What I want in music.

"Jingo" (100)
Probably favorite track of the record. Those deep bass sounds are almost like a little eerie, and love it. Then comes the organ. It's like this death march/funeral procession. And then explodes the guitar.

"Persuasion" (90)
Love the vocals and rhythms and octaves from the bass. Dig the chorus and then post chorus breakdown.

"Treat (instrumental)" (85)
Wow, that's some mean/soulful piano playing. Makes me want to find out who plays keys with him. Same as organist cause that's just as important as his guitar playing, imo. Like how this builds and dies down/good dynamics.

"You Just Don't Care" (80)
Rad bass line in the beginning with that organ. Turn around and the bass probably makes this record for me.

"Soul Sacrifice (instrumental)" (90)
Wow, just the explosive percussion on this... Great way to close a record with so much musical energy.

Overall Experience

Pretty sad to see this so low on the charts. I had never listened to this record before this experience. My mom saw Santana and we had a best of collection growing up... but this really is a great record. I feel Santana is on par with Jimi Hendrix in the sense that his guitar playing is equally his personality and he's got a great band. He's got that same chill vocal too. But then he has these explosive instrumentals. It's like latin Jazz and Jimi Hendrix had a baby (yes I realize how simplistic and cliche that sounds, but that's how I feel).

I think I'll put this to rest for a bit by finishing up my top 20... I still have the 70s through today to do as a survey and feel totally out of the loop on artists that have emerged since 2010

#18 Score: 90/100

Thumbnail. Click to enlarge.

I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You by Aretha Franklin.

Respect (100)
She took a "man's" song and made it almost a woman's rights song and AT THE SAME TIME made it way better than the original from Otis Redding. Easily one of the most soulful/funky song of the era. Everything from the drums, sax, bassline, and of course the vocals/backup vocals are all spot on... no extra clutter in the song. Solid.

Drown In My Own Tears (75)
Blues in the key of Aretha. I like it... but it's not my favorite on the album. From the heart and lyrics solid, but missing the musical element other tracks have.

I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You) (100)
I love how this song starts out. That electric piano and rolling wheel sound. And then... that hook with the title of the track... it's so musically BAM!!! to me. Her "pink" voice (something I heard a singer I worked with once talk about... "she's got that pink voice")... in other words powerful/big/loud/soulful.

Soul Serenade (85)
The horn section is kinda what makes this song for me. Electric piano is nice, and well of course her soulful singing (hehe, soul serenade=soul singing... ok that was lame).

Don't Let Me Lose This Dream (70)
60s vibe here... almost like the way to san jose. Reminds me of a type of Latin beat, but not sure what it is. While it musically adds a level to the album/shakes it up a bit and I do like the chorus... the overall song is just a bit to much.

Baby, Baby, Baby (90)
Those backup singers really make this for me more than anything else somehow.

Dr. Feelgood (100)
Something a little sexy. Starts out a little slow, but builds real nice. I like the church organ meets soul organ. Gets real a little after 2 minutes.

Good Times (100)
Classic cover. Nice change up to be a little more lively.

Do Right Woman - Do Right Man (90)
Dig the bass intro. Possibly one of the most soulful songs on the record. LOVE the backup singers. Chorus is just so full of heart.

Save Me (100)
This has a bit of rock n' roll to it, so that mixed with Aretha... and well... you get a high score. Some early funk/soul party?

A Change Is Gonna Come (70)
Not quite Same Cooke... but I like how this breathes lyrically.

Overall Experience

I'm a sucker for soul/funk music like this. I feel they tap into the human element more than any other genre. It seems so real and emotional... true heart, and not contrived. At least that's how it feels to me.

One of the few melismatic singers that I don't feel isn't putting you on... kind of like a good solo with a guitar... too many notes and it looses magic for me. She's all magic.

It's also the first record with a tinge of feminism to it, that I really like. Do Right Woman and Respect are some great examples.
So, based on your chart, you may find this album interesting. Skaldowie were one of the most popular Polish bands in 1960s, and this is probably their finest album, from 1969. While they were obviously familiar with modern trends and you will hear the influence of Beach Boys (vocal harmonies) or folk rock, but what makes it different is the inclusion of Polish folklore. Some songs, like Malowany Dym or Z kopyta kulig rwie are directly based on Polish highlander music.

It's available on Spotify.

Cool! Yeah the thing with that album is underneath all the electronic madness and experimentation it's really just a really well crafted psych pop album with some seriously undeniable melodies
Although it's also psychedelic it's not electronic or anything, but I feel like their approach to melody is somewhat comparable

Ah gotcha. Totally dig we can talk about this... sometimes I feel it's not allowed :(.

What exactly do you mean you feel that is not allowed ?

BEA, a website where the entire Top 100 is dadrock wank, is apparently hostile to the Beatles. This is the byline of every Beatles fan on the forums (meaning, virtually every user on the forums).

Count me out, then. I'm a Beatles fan and I don't give a shit about hostility issues, whether real, sensed or imagined.

My byline is "Let's talk music".

He was being sarcastic, mostly because every time he, or someone else, happens to say "Hey man, I don't really like the Beatles" he gets attacked for lying and trying too hard to be "artsy" or something. There's no hostility here, or at least, there shouldn't be.

I originally was stating I'm glad I'm having a respectable conversation with a fellow Beatles fan, because I have had similar discussions in the regular forums and it was filled with, they are over done and your like for them is because you have a small brain... and so I was saying finally I'm happy that I get to have a conversation about them without so much hatred interrupting it or similar... I mean people can post how they feel... it's just less motivating to have that conversation.

AND THEN TWO PAGES LATER... (while I agree with you nobody said you shouldn't be a beatles fan in the last two pages, it did just totally ruin my motivation to talk about them again).

Having said that I tried to have empathy and put myself in his shoes... I'd be equally frustrated if I read anywhere something negative about something I love. I said something negative about what he loves... albeit I wasn't purposely saying your music sucks (and I don't think that)... but what I was saying was the feeling I get when I listen to it... my honest opinion and I don't think I should be outed like an idiot asshole (I think kinder words like arrogant and ignorant were used) for giving my honest opinion... especially since my honest opinion was trying to understand an art form that is extremely neglected.
Regardless of how you feel about any kind of music...you should never be made to be seen as an asshole for whatever your opinion of it may be. And if you are having a difficult time with any kind of music, you should never be made to feel anything negative about that. Music is different for everybody, and we should not ever expect others to share exactly what we experience. Your music diary should not be about gaining acceptance from others about what you listen to...it should be about sharing your experience with that music, no matter what that experience may be. Positive or negative. Understanding or not. If something strikes you in a different or negative way, that's fine...you have the right to feel that, and you certainly have the right to express that...especially on a forum that is all about what you are experiencing on your journey through music. And if you are trying to understand what you are hearing, you deserve feedback that will help you to get what you are seeking.

I'm a fan of your diary. It feels honest, genuine, and you can feel the love you have for the music you are listening to. So bravo, seth. Keep up the good work.

Seth I can assure you that the vast majority of us who enjoy all this stuff find that enjoyment via the same emotional response circuitry that applies to most any other kind of music and that conceptuals and purely cerebral examinations have very little to do with it

Are all instances of talking shit about '60s jazz despite, based on the fact that he hadn't even heard Spiritual Unity before I mentioned it, most likely not engaging with very much '60s jazz at all.

Ok I got it. I saw the Ayler stuff 4 days ago. I thought there was a full on dismissal of all 60s jazz, and not just avant and free jazz, which I interpreted it as. But despite some of the poor choices of words, I also read what Seth wrote as internal monologue, and wanting to understand it, based on the following quote:

Quote:

If really experimental stuff connects you with humanity and is enjoyable for someone, great, just I don't enjoy it. And then I don't get it either... I'm trying... but I just don't.

So I don't quite see it as an absolute dismissal of all 60s jazz, but I can also see you you might've been frustrated by it.

And no, I wasn't dismissing all 60s Jazz... I was trying to understand music that had no form (as I interpret it). This thread is full of my attempt at understanding experimental music and asking questions to start dialgue... and that got interpreted into your an idiot asshole.

Apparently when I say free jazz feels this way to me, I need to say... free jazz I have listened to... otherwise it get's interpreted as ALL FREE JAZZ... which is impossible to know all free jazz... soo... I don't even know.

I can't even start to respond to everything fully because it's like 10 pages of arguing things that I feel aren't my message at all on my own damn journal...

But first off, my comment had nothing to do with Jazz in the 1960s specifically and everything to do with experimental music (I commented on 12-tone and atonal music which started more at the turn of the century with Schoenberg)... so I don't appreciate you taking that out of context. And that's exactly how I feel when I listen to it... an emotional 4 year old banging on an instrument. THAT'S WHAT I HEAR... I don't attach to it in another way... my questions (not accusations that you keep suggesting I make) about if you like it, were me reaching out to find out why/how/what about it... but somehow that made you angry and refused to respond to my questions.

This recent thread of responses is exactly why I said it's nice to be able to talk to someone about something I love instead of being trashed for it. Instead of Grzywa and I geeking out on a band we both like and me simply stating, hey I was afraid to do this in the regular forums because I feel a lot of people would make negative comments about the Beatles and it's nice we can exchange commentary... it turned into a shit fest of anger.

Also if you read about what I said about Ayler I was thanking the both of you for suggesting it and that it was much more accessible to me... it had structure and meaning to it that I was able to associate with finally. I listened to it and rated it on the same day.

Maybe from here on out I'll keep this personal... as mentioned I was kind of having a monologue with myself, trying to understand music I don't understand and asking real questions (I even commented that I wasn't accusing people of being hipsters and not really liking the music... if I were I'd make that comment, not ask a question. EVERY TIME IT WAS AN HONEST QUESTION.

I appreciate the non-asshole comments and conversations, from everyone. Everyone has contributed to my growth and understanding. I've learned a lot... it's crazy how one sentence can turn into so many pages of anger. It's too bad really because I got all excited that this thread had some comments on it for discussion, and now I'm totally demotivated to continue with the whole human interaction thing... I can do this project on my own.
Saying that free jazz, made at a time of aesthetic and political renewal on the frontlines of one of the most tumultuous times in Black American history, could be replicated by a four year old banging on a piano is odious fucking garbage. But this kind of kneejerk cynicism about anything elevated above a fucking Beatles song is constant on BEA. I think I was right to initiate a short break from the site. I'm honestly just more and more frustrated coming on here and having the same arguments time and time again with people who won't even make the effort to try these things or understand their history before spewing stupid bullshit.

I feel like part of the disconnect here is that since Seth gets no emotional response from all the music mentioned here, he assumed that those who "like" the music enjoy it for reasons other than emotional interaction? Like detached intellectual analysis? Seth I can assure you that the vast majority of us who enjoy all this stuff find that enjoyment via the same emotional response circuitry that applies to most any other kind of music and that conceptuals and purely cerebral examinations have very little to do with it
