I'll consider that, but I'm near the end of a very long series that I started last July, where I listen to six albums per year. Starting with 6 albums from the 50's, I've gone year by year until now, I'm at 2012, so I have a few weeks to go with that series.

After that I was going to concentrate on singles for awhile. However, if I think of a great concept for a music diary I might do one.

¡Tré! by Green Day

The most obvious distinction for this part of the trilogy is that the tempo seems slower, more relaxed, more mellow. This is the balladeer side of Green Day, the Green Day of "Wake Me Up When September Ends" and "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)." The harmonies are still there, but not as much, and there occasional moments when it rocks, but not as often.

Unlike the first two, there's a definite progression to this album. The songs get more complicated as the album goes along. "Dirty Rotten Bastards" (my favorite from Tre!) is a song suite along the lines of 'Jesus of Suburbia'.

Instead of thinking that Uno! was Billy's album, I now believe that it's really Tre's album. Rock and Roll needs a good drummer, and Tre's at his best on Uno, in spite of the names and faces on the cover. Tre! is actually Billy's album, showcasing his songwriting. All the songs on all three albums were written by Armstrong, but I think on this one he was trying a little harder. Dos! is still Mike's album.

Green Day came out of the Alternative music scene in the 1990's, a genre I never cared for even when it was popular. I didn't get into Green Day until American Idiot, which is when they took a level in Awesome. Going back and listening to their catalog, their old 90's stuff sounds better than their contemporaries, but it's still angsty and whiny. They got better, much better.

I say all that to explain why I didn't like the third album nearly as much as the first two. I enjoyed Uno! the most. Like I said, it's one of the best Rock and Roll albums of the last 25 years, and here the band was *concentrating* on the Rock and Roll aspect of their collective personality.

So there you have it. I have enough information now to rank them properly in the context of 2012 and the 2010's decade.

p.s. As far as I can tell, Cuatro! is a documentary, and I could not find any references to it as an album. But I will definitely try to find Cuatro! and watch it. Thanks for mentioning it, LoneStarRebel
There is a difference. Dos! maintains (almost) the same level of Rock And Roll from Uno! but adds a layer of harmony to almost every song. A lot of Green Day songs have Billy Joe singing on the versus and go for harmony on the choruses and/or bridges. On Dos! the harmonies are there for the whole song, most of the time.

Put another way, Uno! is Eddie Cochran; Dos! is the Beach Boys. Uno! is Please Please Me, Dos! is Beatles For Sale. Uno! is American Idiot; Dos! is Holiday. Uno! is the beginning and air-guitar parts of Know Your Enemy; Dos! is the chorus of Know Your Enemy, and the way-o-way bits.

Uno! is Billy Joe Armstrong. Dos! is Billy Joe Armstrong *and* Mike Dirnt.

After lunch I'll listen to Tre! We'll see how that completes the picture of Green Day as a band.

I know that they are *technically* separate albums. Wikipedia doesn't even have a page for the trilogy. My question is, is there any thing in the music or lyrics that makes the separate albums separate?

Anyway. tabling that question for now.

Just listened to !Uno! I significantly underrated this the first time I heard it. I think I was expecting another American Idiot. (which they'd already tried with 21st Century Breakdown), and was disappointed when there didn't seem to be any kind of concept.

But what we have instead is Rock And Roll at a level of awesome seen very rarely in the last 25 years. Eight out of the twelve songs were 8 out of 10 or better (the rest were 7 or 6), which is 'Loved It' territory. So, that's the baseline. We'll see how !Dos! and !Tre! compare to it.

It doesn't really matter that they were released on different days...they are separate albums regardless. Bruce Springsteen released Lucky Town and Human Touch on the same day, as did Guns 'N' Roses with Use Your Illusion I & II. Both duos are regarded as separate albums.
Billy Joe Armstrong has no ability to censor himself, he just unloads all of his songs and is like "Everyone will LOVE a triple album!" and then more than half the songs suck.

To answer your question about if they are separate albums... Wikipedia lists them with different release dates.

If they were one release I would assume they wouldn't have done so:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Day_discography#Studio_albums

Also way cool to go through each year and analyze it.

Right now I'm listening to these albums for the 1970s and doing the same:

https://open.spotify.com/user/1226145753/playlist/5jwE6avIb9i7oaPqM4IssO
Are they three albums, or one really long one? On first listen, I think I enjoyed as many moments as any one Green Day album, except, that enjoyment was diluted over three albums. So in my lists, I just have them bunched together.

My question is, has anyone listened to these albums a lot, to the point where they can identify a difference between them, other than the assortment of tracks on each?

I've been going year by year, listening to a bunch of albums within each year, and tomorrow I'll be starting on 2012. This is one (three?) of the 2012 albums I'm going give a re-listen. If I had something different to listen for in each album, I might have a better shot at differentiating them. Any advice?
