i agree, The United States of America was a really offensive name for a band, but i suppose the 60's were just a different time.

Guys we're talking about a genre with a band called The The, Preoccupations is a totally OK ish name. Not inspiring maybe but again I really don't see why this matters

If they had intended to be provocative or hurtful this would be a different story. This is 4 white guys who admit they didn't know about the history, and seemingly only chose the name because it sounded cool. I would say it's tacky if they at least had some kind of point to it, but it's the lack of that that made it shitty.

I just realized I read the new name wrong. I thought the new name was 'Preoccupied' (like, the name of the band was preoccupied..) which made sense. Preoccupations doesn't make sense 😐

I agree that Preoccupations is bland, but Viet Cong isn't near the level of something like Joy Division, New Order or Gang of Four. All of those names are really creative double entendres . And well Dead Kennedys was just truly offensive in the perfect way necessary for Jello Biafra.

If they did, in fact say that they didn't realize the name would offend people, then they're simply really stupid and deserve to have to change their name...stupid is not an excuse. If they did know (and I'm quite sure they did know), then they should have realized that sooner or later, someone was going to start complaining. But, hey...why not use it anyway, because all publicity is good publicity, right?

You have the right to name your band whatever you want to. But when you use something that will be clearly offensive to people and it comes back and bites you in the ass, don't be butthurt and act ignorant about it. You asked for it, you got it.

But either way...these guys are getting what they wanted from it all along. Publicity.
