Never was a huge fan of prince, but he was undeniably talented and has a great legacy. I think sign of the times was his best release.

I agree w/ the Beyonce comment.

I was disgusted when I found out how the album was rated upon its release. Does anyone think that could be a byproduct of not being Purple Rain part 2?

Sign is a great album. Glad you were able to get into it! It's probably my 3rd favorite album of his. If you like the funky stuff, 1999 isn't a bad place to go for Prince. My two favorite by Prince are Purple Rain and Around The World in a Day, more pop than funk, but a lot of great shit.

As for what next? For that pure funky bliss, Dirty Mind is it. For more of this beautiful unabashed pop and that vibe of going all over and doing everything well - Purple Rain. Or Parade.

Then if you want some long epic electro funk classics and hits "1999" is great.

What an excellent and touching performance. Perfect song choice, and just a spot on rendition. I'd love to see D'Angelo live one day... I'm assuming he'd put on a ridiculously stellar show.

ATWIAD is god damn incredible. It didn't click with me until the 2nd listen but I fucking love the majority of it and on most days more than Sign O The Times.

I agree with the notion that Prince may not have been the most consistent artist we've ever seen in terms of releases, but the good outweighs the bad like with any legend. Dylan, Stevie, Bowie, Neil Young, etc.. all have numerous albums that have gone down as duds. Who doesn't?

I'm not going to pretend his music ever really clicked with me, but he seemed like a genuinely weird human being in the best way possible. Always pushing forward, trying new things, shaking things up in great ways. The first superbowl I think I ever watched was his half time show, and while again the music wasn't for me as much it's one of the only halftime shows I can still remember well because it was just notably different. I remember being intrigued more than into the music, just confused in good ways.

I know that might not be the best tribute to him, but between him and Bowie it feels like the world lost a couple people that kept pushing boundaries and it really is a pity.
