Quite a lot of alt-rock cliches in this thread (though some I definitely agree with) so I figured I'd chip in.

Rush - Permanent Waves / Moving Pictures / Signals
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia / Deadwing / Fear of a Blank Planet
The Who - Tommy / Who's Next / Quadrophenia (I think this one's almost objectively true, as many have pointed out. These 3 albums are that good.)
