I'm listening to music most the time I'm awake - whenever i'm on my laptop, when i'm walking to places. It's not often I feel I've heard "too much" but there are times where I just can't think of anything I want to listen to, but I don't think that's anything to do with "too much" so much as just not being in the mood.

For me, there's no definitive line, but I'm aware that I tend to use music to moderate my mood a lot of the time, and there's an element of escapism there that I have to watch, but I consciously try and find spaces for silence in my days as well.

Same with staring at glowing screens. When you work on a computer, look at your phone during your lunch break, and then go home and watch TV for an hour or two... you basically spent 10 to 12 of your waking hours staring at a glowing screen... that's just sad, but so true for so many.
Yesterday I was making a music playlist for my grandpa's 90th birthday party. Me and him were searching for his fav songs from his teenage years on youtube (mainly from late 1930s-early 1940s) and after we've found about 20 songs he said it's enough, he needs some silence. 😜 It's just one example for your question and how different answers can be.

So it really all depends on the person, for someone even a 12-hour session is not enough while for others even 1 hour is too much if we talk about how much music a person listens to a day. But there are so many other perspectives as well like how much music one can listen to in a certain period (e.g. weeks, months or even years), it depends on how you want to measure...which is by the way pointless because we our needs are different.

Please tell me your project is a searchable thing on YouTube now 😄
This is quite an interesting question and I've been pondering it for a few days now. This might not be for the case for everyone, but heres my hopefully somewhat attempt to answer:
A lot of music I really enjoy is often attributed to a certain personal memory of something going on in my life when that song/album/band came to me. So a lot of times when I'm listening to something, I'll also be reminiscing on personal moments in time.
When is too much though? When I'm not living these certain moments in life anymore but instead listening to an album repeatedly for the sake of listening to it because I've heard that its really good or that I should. So instead of listening to Tom Waits and remembering the long work shifts I had for this one particular job, I'm remembering sitting on my deck smoking cigarettes constantly listening to Kraftwerk because i know how influential they were and I sometimes feel like Im forcing myself to like it.
Does that make sense? Like i said, its a tough question but that was a little of the thought process I've come up with to try to answer it.

I've been to the point where I've listened to too much music. My ears started to hurt and I got a bit of a headache. So when that happens I know to turn the music off because I've reached the point of too much music for the time being.

This is a weird question, though. When I was in early high school, I was terrified that being obsessed with music would make me a failure at life (I even made a song about it on Tales of Slipknot Oceans called "Living With Music"). And of course, that great Sister Sledge/Larry Levan song "Lost in Music" shows that sort of worry really well, too. I don't think it's very well-founded, though, at least not any more than any other sort of entertainment.

It obviously is terrible when you go deaf, but that's just as likely to happen at construction sites and gun ranges as it is around music, and you can even argue it's much more preventable with the latter.

I can't see how one could ever listen to too much music. However....one can talk about music too much. It's the same as anything else, whether it's politics, sports, movies, etc. If you only ever talk about one thing, you quickly become a bore.

It becomes unhealthy when we stop getting anything out of it, and begin treating listening like a job. "Must listen to this album immediately, so I can share my opinion"

hahahaaha.

Honestly I think music, for me, is WAY better than say murdering someone or becoming a drunk, so totally healthy out instead of the alternative.

But yeah, basically any "real" addiction signs are the same regardless of your vice.

As to the argument of if Music is worth spending A LOT of time on and could I be spending time on something else that is more productive... probably. Instead of the 900+ albums I've listened to since January, I could have become certified in say... scuba diving and then when there's dead people in lakes, I can get paid big bucks to go find them... or I could just listen to 900 albums...

At that point it isn't a question of addiction, but an opportunity cost question and how much you value your time towards "goals".

For me, if I ask myself, am I spending more time listening to music than my parents did watching TV... well then I'm probably pretty average waste of human existence being a consumer, just like everyone else.

Up until recently my band mates and I asked this question: is it worth our time to spend hundreds of hours writing and performing music that maybe 20 people care about? The answer was the same... well my wife watches 80 billion episodes of every lame ass TV show out there... that's totally less worthy of my time.

But if I want to actually achieve things beyond the average person, well then yeah... music is a total waste of your time and you should micromanage your money so that you too can rule the world.
