Friends that like me for my music collection. Because lord knows if I didn't have them I'd have to show off my sock puppet collection which is not only less impressive but kinda weird.

I know this wasn't directed at me but since I can identify with the post I figured I'd answer. That seemed to be the point anyway.

But no, my actual answer is just to waste money. If I'm making 500 bucks a week (though as of right now I'm not, which kinda sucks when you like buying stuff) instead of saving up for something bigger I'll just spend 90% of my funds on entertainment and 10 % on necessities.

Interesting topic, this. I've rarely bought a record with the sole intention of supporting the artist financially, but more because I actually dig the music to such a degree that to own it in a physical format just seems like the right thing to do. If I was going to do that, I'd more than likely buy through Bandcamp, which I've done on a couple of occasions and in one case (the Tuff Love LP from earlier this year) got a nice little letter in the post with the record to thank me. Nice touch.

Since I started buying vinyl again in 2014 after a 10-odd year hiatus (where I bought precisely nothing on any physical format - everything downloaded - although I spent the 90s hoarding CDs like crazy) I've rediscovered the thrill of going record shopping: wandering into a shop with no idea of what you might find and coming out with either a bargain or some obscure curio I've been hunting for for ages. To that extent - as indeed was the case today when I paid about £4 over-the-odds for the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band LP - I tend to try my best to support indie records shops when buying wax. In an odd sort of way it's a throwback to my youth when I used to spend all my spare time hanging out in Our Price and my local record emporium The Rock Box (still going strong) hogging the listening post until it was time to go home for tea. I rarely buy new records over t'Internet unless I just can't find it, or it's from an indie shop's own website (such as Honest Jon's).

The exception to this is second-hand vinyl, and that's where my collector's head comes in. I buy that on one of the following criteria - if it's under the accepted going rate (using Record Collector guide/Discogs as a comparison), if it's an original pressing (very important), the condition, if I've never seen it before (thrill of the chase and all that) and if I'm brutally honest there's also a bit of 'hey, look what I've found'/bighead factor to be considered too. Then again, if it's dirt cheap and I've never heard it but can't turn down the opportunity to do so, even if it ends up with me selling it at a Car Boot sale 6 months down the line (such as a copy of Talk Talk's Spirit Of Eden which I got for £1 in a charity shop) that can often work too. Bottom line is that I don't have a hierarchy that dictates whether or not I buy a specific record - in fact thanks to my in-built thrifty instincts any second-hand purchases tend to be more driven by price than anything else. I also only buy stuff I'll actually listen to - anyone who buys a record and leaves it in its shrink wrap because it might be 'worth something down the line' is my idea of the kind of person who has godawful B.O. and doesn't have anyone to dance with at parties.

There are a lot of reasons I buy an album, most of which are so obvious I won't waste my time explaining.

However, I can say I am far more inclined to buy an album by an artist if I am going to see them live. This is a huge factor for me. At least half the new releases I bought last year were by artists I saw live.

Agreed.

If you like it enough to listen to it multiple times, go out and support them.

Also, liner notes are fun to read while giving the album a listen. And collecting can be a fun hobby.

I go for the lyrics, the singing, and the instrumental delivery. 😄 😄 😄
Actually, for me, my main reason for buying music, beyond liking something, is an ethical decision: to support the artist, because I know they get hardly any income from me just streaming.

The music I like the most, I connect with on every level. It's got to intrigue me lyrically, and feel right, and sound right. If I find an artist I like, I tend to explore their whole catalog.

I tend to buy CD's, and then vinyl if the album has become significant in my life experience. I never got into buying downloads, but have been enjoying Apple Music as a means of music discovery this year.

When it comes to buying music instead of just streaming, it usually comes down to me liking the band as people or really enjoying their live show. Because just about everything can just get streamed I don't really bother unless it's almost as a thanks to the band for being cool. Exceptions there are stuff that's hard to find digitally or stuff that's cheap and just cool (see: all the 78s I bought even though I probably shouldn't have)

I've been listening to A LOT of music lately (for me 900+ albums since January seems like A LOT).

I've noticed that I pay attention to lyrics like only 20% (to my detriment for those artists that their best part is their lyrics (Dylan, rap, cohen, etc.), rhythm plays a huge part (focusing a decent amount of my focus at the bass/rhythm section), and then to be honest I'm a bitter sweet pop guy 80% of the time, so is a catchy, yet mentally intriguing, heart thumping song that identifies with my humanity?

As for purchasing... I only really buy music if I already love it. If I don't love it yet... I don't buy it. (unless it's like huh, I want to check it out and I found a used copy for $2 and I kinda can't find it anywhere else).

Just curious as to what is your main reason for buying music from a particular artist,be it cd or lp...do you buy for the lyrical content, maybe the musicianship,or maybe just how it sounds?.....I buy mainly for the sound quality.I never hardly ever listen to the lyrics, unless they are easy to hear or right there and obvious. Sound quality is for sure number one for me...what about you??.Thanks,Huck50
