Ok so I stopped getting notifications for this thread, and just assumed that people stopped posting, but I came back to check and holy crap there's all this.

Just as clarification on my stance as I mentioned before:

There's Popular, and there's Pop, sometimes people shorten Popular to Pop but that's not really what I meant. When I made this thread, I meant Pop as a genre of music.

While I totally agree... there are some top 40 musicians who you could argue otherwise. While I myself don't really agree, some could argue Lady Gaga for example.

It's kind of a useless conversation like boyd94 pointed out, but it interesting at least to think about for 45 seconds.

Also while it isn't based on popularity (meaning something not pop music can be popular), it's structure/form are meant to appeal to the masses.

Of course when it comes to popular music Tin Pan Alley and Chubby Checker are the same. So is Nirvana and Britney Spears.

Pop music as a specific genre, no they are not the same.

I included the articles because I was too lazy to write it out myself, not because I feel it is an authoritative source. And I feel those two articles both explain the differences, but also are properly vague in the sense that we are dealing with different definitions:
