I just have to add that I watched Carol when compiling my own list at the beginning of 2016, and I just don't get the love for it. Maybe it's just me.

My top 2 are in the top 5, so cool. Jacob Tremblay is nicely high, and "Room" in general got some love.

Edit: scratch that - Room was 13!?!?!! Damn.

Also surpris d how low sicario was. But Me and Earl and the Duing Girl in the top 10 did legitimately surprise me. Glad it got love.

I agree with all of this, though Brie Larson would be #1 on my actress list. Stunning performances from both her and Tremblay.

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon

Picked this up today while out shopping. Funny thing is I was at Best Buy and it was $25 on BluRay, $20 on DVD. I said "nah" and went about my day (settled for a discounted copy of Inherent Vice instead). An hour later I'm in Target and there it is for ten dollars less on each format, so I happily snatched up the $15 BluRay. If I'm disappointed I'm blaming you guys.

[Also found a used bluray of Straight Outta Compton for $5 at the pawn shop although I passed as I'm in no rush to watch it again although it was good. Bought Waking Life, United 93 & Good Night and Good Luck on DVD for $1 each instead as I had already wiped out all the good blurays last time I was there.]

Now that I've given it time to bake I can probably say The Hateful Eight was my personal favorite. Thinking back on all the movies I've watched it's the one I'm most ready to give a second viewing. It's the Tarantino mark in me. I think it's my favorite movie of his so dar this century.

But yeah the top 15 here is still pretty killer. Haven't seen the Sorrentino film yet though.

I'm too lazy to work out the #1's right now (I didn't mark them on the excel sheet this time), but I'll post that eventually. The runner up's were Mistress America, The Tribe, Experimenter, Theeb and What Happened Miss Simone.

Yeah Im on a shorter temper than usual today, so perhaps getting needlessly snappy. I guess I just see this thread a bit too much as us all lecturing each other on semantics.

But the best way to put it I guess is that obviously we all have kind of a limited barometer on how we gauge the overall reaction to film, as often the general perception is more often based on who we interact with personally. Obviously if you liked the film and most of the people you talked to share that opinion, than obviously that can paint the perception of more universal praise, which isn't entirely true- and of course on the other hand, like me who didn't care for the film and who tends to share Skinny's experience in that most of the people I talked to or read their reaction were more towards just being underwhelmed or had a much more negative reaction, so that could also gave a bit of a specious perception that the film wasn't all that well liked and could be a bit surprised it did so well on a poll like this, even though looking at the wider reaction that isn't so surprising. If you were to look at a critical or audience rating-based site to get some sort of numerical (but far, far from ironclad) guesstimate of overall reaction, I think on say Metacritic (although that needs to be taken with a major grain of salt as there's something fishy in how they calculate their reviews) it got like a 68, 69, which overall says yes the reaction leans toward the positive- but it also had a lot of mixed and even a few outright appalled reviews as well, so there was no overwhelming "consesus" towards the positive. And going on say IMDB, letterboxd, the reaction still was fairly strong, but it had a lot of vocal detractors as well. So obviously I know it was said to be "near universally praised" in the quoted post which is a lot different than saying there was a unanimous, universal consesus opinion, cause no film no matter how many great the reviews all seem to be, is ever going to have a positive reaction from every single viewer that sees it. However, it's not wrong to say either "it was generally well liked" nor "it was polarizing" since both depend on a subjective view of the overall opinion and obviously The Hateful Eight did get a lot of love but also a fair amount of less-than-stellar reactions. So I guess overall it's just pointless to make a mountain of molehill here since nobody is really mistaken either which way they view it, other than it got a unanimous "100 percent positive/negative reaction".

The Hateful Eight is definitely a polarizing film.

I think it's great. It's not my favourite Tarantino film, perhaps not even in my top 5 from him, but I certainly enjoyed it. The entire minimal sets stage-play feeling it has really appeals to me.

The only thing I think people are overrating (or just talking about too much) is the cinematography. Just because it's on 70mm doesn't mean it's the best shot film ever. Or even of the year. Or even of the month it came out. It's just ridiculously wide 🤣 I'm still not sure why Tarantino thought it was necessary to pull that stunt when working on a film that is essentially 80% inside a cabin.

But no, yeah “universal” might not’ve been my wording but I guess I was just looking for some kind of conversation even if it was a silly argument. BEA’s been kind of uninteresting for me lately so I’m looking for any kind of conversation as long as it isn’t an echo chamber.
Yeah in retrospect it's not surprising it landed in the top ten, which isn't some egregious travesty, and it def has a good number of fans like all tarantino film- but that doesn't mean there's some unanimous consesus. Obviously it has passionate supporters, but plenty of detractors as well- there have both friends IRL as well as several BEAers (haha IS THERE A DIFFERENCE) have stated it's either average, dissapointing or even outright bad, and it got a good number of underwhelming or outright negative critical reviews to go with the more positive ones. There's a big difference between an overwhelming "consensus" and "generally or leans towards favorable" reviews. Sorry for acting condescending here .

It's an issue of semantics - the not insignificant amount of vocal detractors, whilst still in a minority, means that the film can't claim "near universal acclaim", at least by my definition. It was still obviously very popular, and generally highly regarded.

Yes, but it isn't near universally liked. I haven't even seen it yet, but I only know about three people who liked it, compared to many who found it underwhelming. Maybe the people I speak to about films are out of touch with the general population, but I somehow doubt it. Seems more likely that you're confusing critical reception with real world reception.
