1. This reminded me of Sonic Youth.

2. I've yet to get into this type of music. Not that I haven't tried, but it just doesn't grab me... I feel like it's great to
play in the background while doing something else like talking... ahhaa... And I HATE talking during music. So... dunno. I like the bass line, but yeah, the lyrics were alright and...

+3. I liked this for sure. Nice tones and sassy singing for some good punk rock.

4. I just kept thinking Monster Mash.

7. Imagery was powerful.

8. This matched my emptiness inside.

9. Very Cure-like, yet vocally as/if not more interesting.

+11. This was possibly my favorite track.

Sorry mate... I don't think I really have anything to say further other than thanks for a different listening experience. I suck.

I do somehow feel like being a cross-dresser now.

this is everything I'd expect from a Brandon playlist, which is to say it's simultaneously expressively vulnerable and unrelentingly loaded with attitude. Very consistent vibe flowing throughout the whole thing, ebbing and flowing through different modes of cuteness and badassery (in equal proportion). I like how you've found the connection between being adorable/lovable and being unfuckwithable 😉 . I'd been meaning to check out Black Tambourine for some time, and this track was undoubtedly an excellent introduction. Oh yeah and that Q4U track was incredible. Hey Brandon, come to the bay area so you can DJ for my next party! There will be Shirley Temples with extra cherries and several rounds of strip Candy Land

Here's why I like this really a lot. Years ago, my friends and I used to make tapes. Lots of them. All the time. And they were everywhere...in our rooms, in our cars. Almost never labeled. So, every once in a while, you'd pick up a tape with no markings on it, or maybe just a single word. You ask yourself, "wonder what this is". Most of the time, the tape was either blank or it had a shitty album on it. But, every once in a while, you pop that tape in and you've discovered gold. This reminds me of that. This playlist reminds me of a tape that someone made at about 4 in the morning on the crap end of a sleepless night. I love the feel of this playlist. Sometimes, it doesn't seem to fit together at all, and then, a few songs later, it all fits perfectly.

This playlist reminds me of that gem of a tape that you find by accident and it makes your day. You don't know who made it, or why...but it's great. Nice job, Brandon!

The track that sent it over the edge for me was the Bush Tetras. Really great stuff.

yeah Strawberry Switchblade woulda been a great ending but I absolutely adore Bonnie Boy and I thought of it as a sort of bonus track, if I could have I would have put like 30 seconds of silence between Since Yesterday and it. Sorry you hated everything, lmao.

As a mix this had an amazing consistency of style (What that style is I'm not sure... a mix of atmospheric, subdued twee with very left-field, more showy post-punky stuff... but whatever it all fits) so props on that (thought I think it ending on Strawberry Switchblade would have been far better than it doing so on Shirley Collins, which didn't fit the mood of the mix at all).

With regards to the music, a lot of this is like the opposite of what I like in music. I didn't enjoy anything from the Mary Monday-Coughs run, and the Q4U track was incredibly grating, as was the Shirley Collins. Of what I liked, "never", "Black Car" and "Hollow Inside" were all very pretty and atmospheric, and whilst I wasn't a huge fan of the Strawberry Switchblade track I did feel it would have made a very appropriate closing track.

Sorry about the delay, got a bit busy. But I just gave this a listen, and it was cool, some nice songs in here. Like there was a really clear sensibility to it that I'm not sure quite how to articulate. It's certainly guitar heavy, but even with the synth interruptions with 45 Grave or Q4U, it still felt like there was a vibe that kept running thru. I want to say it's sort of in the vocals, even though there's stylistic variation, there's this sort of aloof quality maybe? I dunno I guess some people talk about that like a negative but I dig it. Though I wouldn't say the last track has it, which made it great as a closer.

Good stuff! I should check out that Coughs album, that sounds like a fun one.

Well now I look *and* feel stupid. Should've at least googled it, that's rather interesting. Listened to some of their other stuff and it doesn't come across much Cranberries-esque at all, but there was something on that track I saw more.

BTW I totally should've linked before but the more I've thought on this the more I'm really convinced you'd like Lady Pills, was lucky enough to see them live and they're a lot noisier live but the recorded stuff stands up pretty well

thanks for the comment, I like that I got a nice paragraph to read 😄 I was kinda worried never would be one of the less well-received ones because the vocals are somewhat repetitive (doesn't really bother me) but people seem to like it and I'm glad for that!!

Well damn is "never" a way to start this off, that's a really great track. One of my favorite from this whole project thus far. I Gave My Punk Jacket to Ricky sounds SO MUCH like a song I know I know but cannot place at all. Might honestly but a Lady Pills tune I'm thinking of (who, regardless, I'm convinced you'd probably love, Brandon). I know Don Hinson's version of Riboflavin thanks to my best friend back home really loving it a little too much and singing it damn near any chance any of the words in the chorus come up or just around Halloween in general. This is a cool version too, but I'm not gonna lie, I think I've been (polyun)oversaturated by that song to get that much enjoyment out of it at this point - though the ending is far cooler than the much hokier one Hinson gave. Au Pairs felt a little Cranberries rip-offy at times, but really aside from that my only complaint on the whole thing would be the vocals on Q4U. I know that was a stylistic choice and some people would be fine with it, but didn't really work for me, being honest.

I always enjoy new wave/gothic/post-punk influences, so never and Why also connected with me immediately.

I'd say so, but I feel like their music is kinda all over the place to an extent. I enjoy that quality but some might not. For the most part their music is a convergence of schlocky horror movie aesthetics, schlocky 80s rock, and punk. There is even a surf rock instrumental called Surf Bat preceding Riboflavin on their debut and it rules. The lead singer goes by Dinah Cancer (fucking classic). Pretty fun band, I think, I too sing Riboflavin everywhere I go 😜

fun fact, never is by Warpaint's bassist 😄

Yeah, Hollow Inside is really one of my favorite songs ever. I think a lot of ostensibly "twee" bands aren't given enough credit for atmosphere and emotional impact. It is something I've always wanted to talk about; how annoying the twee label is. I feel like making a band out to be all about cuteness kinda infantilizes music with more nuance than that. Its not like people who are into "twee pop" don't realize it is more than that, but people probably stay away from "twee pop" because they think its just cutesie.

I'm glad to hear that was the case! Most of it is just the music I've been listening to this year, so I'm glad my musical habits have philosophical unity heh. Although lately I've just been listening to lots of Mariah Carey which kind of throws a curveball into any philosophical unity my taste may have had 🤣

It's really cool how there's a kind of philosophical unity between most of these artists, in their vocal delivery and playing style, arrangements, mixing, etc. Solid job on the continuity side of things. Feels very much like a statement.
