Kudos, Mr. Paco, it is good to see someone else with a taste for camp. I mostly left them off my list, but over-the-top B movies are among the horror genre's greatest contributions.

Unless you were raised Catholic (or Communist), that's a pecuilar film to designate as a "horror film"

Yeah... 🤔 At the end of the day, it won't make the list anyway because Ben has the only vote for it, but it's definitely an odd choice.

Although it is a fantastic film that I highly recommend 😁

Also, Ben, def watch A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night when you get the chance. Easily one of my favourite films of the decade.

Dude I'be had horror soundtracks playing in my head every day. Hell, I sang the main themes to both Tenebre ("bowow, ballwall, berlwerl, bowo") and Phenomena ("ho-o-o-o-o-oh ho-o-o-oh") flawlessly, covering multiple instruments at once with just my mouth, on the way to dinner the other night. Any time I'm fuckin just getting it like and I finally get it, I hear the "duh-duh-duh-duh-duhh duhhhh, duh-duh-duh" from the climax of The Beyond in my mind. Oh, and the song "Corn Rigs" from The Wicker Man was the first song I ever purchased on iTunes and after 5+ years it's still the most played track out of 13,000+ songs.

I aaaalllmoooosssttt thought of having a side-poll for best horror soundtracks. I don't think there's any other film genre with such a huge catalogue of iconic soundtracks.

So my list in the end is EMBARASSING due to me losing access to Hulu during my last good watch weekend and me having had a flu, 4 midterms, 1 cancelled job interview, 1 real job interview, and 2 mini-papers due in the past week alone, but here's what I got:

1 Shaun of the Dead
2 House (1977)
3 Eraserhead
44 Hellboy
45 Piranhaconda
46 Dinoshark
54 Ouija
55 Super 8

Things that I don't find even classifiable as horror comedy but at least tear apart horror tropes in fun ways: Ghostbusters 1 and 2 (and maybe the remake idk I haven't seen it), Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Young Frankenstein. Things that I don't think of as horror but are good and somewhat similar (i.e. sci-fi thriller/etc): The Abyss (1989), Silence of the Lambs, District 9, Terminator 2, Donnie Darko, Pacific Rim, etc, etc there's a lot that does spooky and or tense that doesn't feel like horror.

And before y'all ask, didn't end up getting to see A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, Alien, Cube, Rosemary's Baby, Funny Games, or Let the Right One In before the date but all are still high on my watchlist (also need to see The Shining at an appropriate age)

btw did anyone take soundtracks heavily into account when making their lists? I know I did. Eraserhead and The Wicker Man in particular rank among my favorites in big part because of the excellent music found inside

It's horrifying because as a viewer we have to mentally engage in the "games", the violence, to fully experience the movie.
Funny Games also kind of predates the torture porn trend of the 00s in the unnerving voyeuristic position Haneke sets the viewer.

Yep I'm convinced. Hayden already tallied it up but just know I've voted for Funny Games in my heart 😁

Just tallied it all up 😁 It's definitely a fun list. It's extremely varied with a lot of different types of horror, including comedic and some borderline thrillers, and it all makes an excellently creepy aesthetic.

Hoping you guys like it 😄 Expecting a few more lists to come in within the next few hours. Deadline is midnight.
You know what? I don't care what makes it and what doesn't. This is gonna be a really fun list. There's so much variety in here, I don't mind seeing a thriller or two or Scream or whatever. This is fun stuff. I do wish those of you who haven't seen a couple of these films will hit up YouTube for them, if I can do some last minute promoting for three that I wouldn't have even considered had I not discovered or rediscovered them.

Maniac (1980) is simply put a definitive slasher film; very low budget but with some of Tom Savini's sickest effects yet and a great performance by Joe Spinell as the killer who scalps women to decorate his mannequins.

Alone in the Dark (1982) seems to be a forgotten classic about a group of psychos (including Jack Palance and Martin Landau who are both stellar) that slash their way out of a mental asylum during a power outage. Can't believe this film isn't more famous.

Alice, Sweet Alice (1976) - a little girl (Brooke Shields in her brief film debut) is burned to death at her communion. Did her little bitch of an older sister do it? An intriguing, violent early slasher.

not just the baby scenes but really I think the whole thing is just the epitome of surreal horror. Nightmares are also fairly removed from our reality, and I think most people would classify those as horrific. Amazing list in any case, though I do have a question.

CellarDoor wrote:

45. does everyone think this counts as horror? Please convince me, because if you succeed I might just have to put it up on my list very very high.

Just watched Dracula (1931) and added it to my list, assuming that's ok. In time it might go a bit higher but it'll be #19 for this list.

Dropped my previous #30 (out of 30) off, though I will miss finishing my list with horror films starring Harry Potter and Frodo Baggins.
