...off the top of my head

Most of music history can barely lift a fist in contention with the astonishing late periods of Beethoven and Schubert. It's a stroke of incredible timing (and personal misfortune) that they happened in the same decade. Schubert is the only artist short of Mozart, where it is conceivable that, if he lived quite a while longer, he just may have eventually surpassed Beethoven -- though at the same time this is tough to assert, because his greatest works were both informed by Beethoven's as well as his own personal misfortune, distressed state of mind, and ill health that was leading to his death, and seem to be inspired by the very fact that he felt he was running out of time and a profound yearning to escape that reality.

Unfortunately, groupings of 10 or so great years don't fall neatly into a particular decade. For jazz, the golden era was roughly 1954 - 1966, for rock 1966-1975. Personally, I see a huge hole in music about a decade long, but it also spans decades, running roughly 1994 - 2004.

sp4cetiger wrote:

Half the fun of being young is thinking that most of the best stuff is being made right now and fuck all the crotchety old guys who think they know better. Yeah, you stop thinking that when you're older, but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it.

Correct it's what keeps things fresh, the arrogance of youth if you will. Personally the best time for me falls into 2 decades. That period from 1985 - 1993 really stands out for the music I love, alt rock / Shoegaze / Indie Pop. And why am I so fond of this era? Erm cause I was aged between 14-23 going to loads of gigs, getting wasted, falling in and out of love, was surrounded by the best friends and through the way I dressed felt totally connected to the music of that era.

So that period will always be most vivid and most loved for me. ojectively I think the 70's was probably the best and most exciting decade whilst I think the 2010's has been the weakest, a bit like a photo copy of a photo copy of a photocopy. But again this view is probably more to do with my age than a statement with any truth to it.

One thing I'd like to point out is for this site to work best we need as many age groups as possible adding charts. I'd imagine at least 70% of users are teenagers/early to mid 20's and experience tells me that half of that number won't have the same passion or even be that bothered with music once they get past 30/35/40 years of age. So next time someone wishes to insult another users taste with the 'dad rock' slur perhaps think about the fact that as the 'supposed dad rocker' is even participating on this site it shows that their passion for music is still intact...will your passion still be there in 20 years?

"So we go inside and we gravely read the stones
all those people all those lives
Where are they now?
With loves and hates and passions just like mine
They were born and then they lived and then they died
Seems so unfair
And I want to cry" - Morrissey 1986

This is really a perfect summary of my opinion as well. 2000's and 2010's will cover my life from age 5-25, so I'm sure those years will be important to me my whole life, but that would very likely change were I born in a different time period.
On the topic of where the music I like comes from though, I've noticed a strange trend. Almost all my favorite 70's albums are British, but as you move through the decades, the proportion of American albums to British albums I listen to becomes increasingly in favor of America. This decade, almost all my favorites are American. And, when it comes to other countries, I usually only listen to albums in the English language. It's the only language I speak, and I don't get as much enjoyment if I don't speak the language.

I still have a lot of music to listen to but I'll say 60s >70s >everything else.

I'l also say American music beats British music by a good margin. The rock of both countries is more even but once you include Jazz and even rap the USA destroys it.
you are so brave 🙁

also re: the whole Romanelli thing, i'm just sick of him lumbering around being the objectivity police constantly and complaining vocally about the 2010s and users who add albums from it to the database in bulk. i can go scare up some quotes with timestamps so people can see that this is something that he posts about fairly constantly, and it's one of the few consistent contributions that he makes to the forums.

i genuinely wasn't calling into question the sacrifice Romanelli makes for the site of time and effort or the quality, but no one seems to want to read the post where i clarified that, so i'll restate - I merely find it amusing that someone who pretty consistently will go into threads in the Suggestions forum for example where musical opinions are not being discussed really and drop these provocations directed into the ether of BEA where he bemoans that people add 2010s albums to the site will then go and spend hours of his time making sure that all the 2010s albums are tidy. the only thing i've ever been salty about with Romanelli is that he always finds EPs that i've added that are at the 20 minute mark and does bad mental math or something for how long they are or isn't finding accurate tracklists and always gets my shit deleted. everything else is cool and appreciated, and i mean that genuinely.

my main conceit with my feelings about liking the 2010s is that the accessibility of all decades is pretty equal to me (barring that i'll inevitably find more 2010s obscurities since i'm living through it) and i know that Romanelli would not take any umbrage with my tastes if i gave Nevermind one listen and loved it. i guess i would just prefer people actually being informed on what they're listening to and would rather hear the opinion of someone who listened to a 2010s album ten times and understands it than one who heard Abbey Road once, agreed with its canon placement, and moved on to more dadrock to build up a larger list of albums. i don't necessarily assume that bad faith of anyone here, but i really don't understand how the potential vintage of a 2010s album is relevant unless you're trying to be a historical/canon-building listener. and if you are trying to be those things, then the vast majority of people who are most vocal about shitting on the 2010s are fairly awful at that, as they have a very passing/minimal understanding of jazz music and haven't begun to approach art music.

but of course Romanelli has to take a sarcastic joke about his knee-jerk hatred of the 2010s in every other thread, be disingenuous that he's just trying to share his wisdom and experience, and then break the fucking forums with that eyesore rant instead of just engaging my (admittedly aggressively presented, but you'd have to be blind or an idiot to not see that i was not the first aggressive person ITT lmao) single question of why more years are needed for perspective on taste versus history.

Hopefully this doesn't add to the shit storm.

The 2010's have been good to us overall. Already some of the most incredible and well received albums have come our way. But I think it's a little early to crown it. Come 2020 and the train is still on the tracks, that's fair game.

But not too long ago I thought about this question just on my own and had to give the 1970's the crown. The majority of my album collection is from the 70's and I'm just in awe of how much good shit came out that decade.

Zeppelin, Sabbath, Floyd, Bowie, Queen, Neil Young, Springsteen, Genesis, Stevie Wonder, The Who, the Stones, Yes, Crimson, Tull, Purple, Elton John.... All in their prime, releasing some of the finest music ever. John, Paul, and George all released some great solo material. Dylan released Blood on the Tracks, The Clash released London Calling. Punk rock, prog rock, and metal all really started to take shape in this decade also.

If that makes me some dad rocker then I will gladly accept that title.

It's definitely exciting checking out all the new music from emerging sub-genres and whatnot, but for me personally I find myself less inclined to re-listen to a 10's album compared to older albums where I replay those albums more frequently.

lol well i think this is better than hair

here's a list from the guy who runs erstwhile records of a sort of primer for electro-acoustic improvisation, been running thru this a lot and finding lots of really good far out there things http://erstwhilerecords.blogspot.com/2008/05/primer.html

https://bleep.com/stream/new-releases is a good way to get a quick view of some things that are out now but it is by no means exhaustive, http://www.brainwashed.com/ has some interesting reviews and also posts forced exposures new release list each week. another good store source is mimaroglumusic.com (currently down due to some domain thing but itll be back soon), they're really good about calling attention to great reissues, focused on the fringe stuff.

oh that reminds me also just using discogs generally is fun, like there's this early electronic dude Ilhan Mimaroglu (namesake of the previously mentioned store), and he produced a bunch of jazz albums and the ones I've heard so far have been pretty cool http://www.discogs.com/artist/76038-Ilh...amp;type=C redits so yeah just diving in on stuff like that is a good time.

there's a new podcast that seems promising based out of chicago. http://cast.now-is.org/ it's a show where a dude talks with musicians about a playlist of music selected by the host while its playing. the episode with olivia block is pretty great and I heard a couple things I hadn't that seem really great.

so yeah to sort of steer this back on topic after all that, I'm always getting confronted by cool stuff from every decade, so I'm just like "yeah I still don't know shit" on this.
and then there's all the reissue labels and everything, and like archival releases like with Ursula Bogner, she was just a german pharmacist who made some great electronic music privately and now that's out there http://www.discogs.com/Ursula-Bogner-Recordings-1969-1988/master/87483
it's all getting surfaced and it puts everything in flux for me

Hi, my name is shay, and I'll be reviewing the flamewar that just occurred.

Romanelli wrote:

We said the same thing in 1985.

You'll get over it.

So here we have Romanelli presenting the idea that Holden also presented. That music will continue to get better in subsequent decades. Satie obviously took issue with this, and presented his honest, fair opinion with a dubious ending line.

permafrost wrote:

...and the wise sage of all of BEA judging by the fact that you so affirmatively decide what should and shouldn't even be in the website database despite the fact that you spend all of your fucking time filling in information for albums that you don't consider the best ever. so enlighten me.

Now, I actually agree with the ideas that satie originally presented in regards to music, but Jesus fucking Christ, what an aggressive, personal, and rather unnecessary addition. I love the way you hate, Perm (especially me), but c'mon man.

So Romanelli had a response, I guess.

Romanelli wrote:

All I was trying to say was that things that are new can be deceptively seen as greater than they actually are. FROM EXPERIENCE.

Don't necessarily agree here, but I'll get to that later.

Romanelli wrote:

You wanna go to my contributions to this website? I work my ass off on this website for NOTHING. For YOU. So you can have a clean album cover picture and tracklist on your charts of the albums you love. You've been here for four months, and I've been working to help this site for almost 5 years. You call me out on what I do for BEA? You don't like my opinion? Move along. But you have a problem with the work I do here? Okay. Please elaborate. Tell me what sucks about what I do for BEA. Tell us all about how what I do here is bad for BEA. Right here. Right now. Do it.

Waiting, permafrost. Whoever the hell you are.

Romanelli gets a bit personal here, which is understandable now that the nature of the argument has changed. Here Rom kind of gives us a bit of what he does for the website, and largely just kind of defends himself from the attacks made by Satie. And he does this very well until the very end where he adds the "lol no one knows u" argument, which will be the focus of perm's response.

permafrost wrote:

there was no implication of not appreciating your contributions to the completeness of the database.

Thumbnail. Click to enlarge.

ive used this image twice today but fuck it

permafrost? wrote:

i was just making a bemused comment about the fact that every single time someone brings up the database you have a pre-packaged rant about all the shit that shouldn't even be on the site in your estimation. if you feel so strongly that things after 2010 are not yet vintage enough to count as best ever albums and that all us teeny-boppers are flooding the database with bullshit, then you should be making a principled stand to not contribute to those releases or shut up about your personal dogma about what does and doesn't belong in the database. i would hope you'd choose the latter option, because your point total clearly indicates that the former choice is more beneficial for the site as a whole.

What the fuck are you even talking about? Is this an anti-rant rant? Should Romanelli stop shouting his stupid unwarranted opinion? Are you wanting him to stop spewing his "personal dogma" over a message board so we can contribute to meaningful discussion? Have you ever BEEN on a message board? That's all it is.

That and dank maymays.

permafrost wrote:

p.s. i constantly bring up that you're out of touch with the forum culture here, and i would think that would be best evidenced in this situation by the fact that literally everyone else here knows that i'm satiemaniac and calls me satie half the fucking time and i've been a forum regular for like a year and a half now on and off. but i don't run around screaming about how my year and a half of service to the site has been instrumental in blah blah blah blah.

Neither does Romanelli (at least where I've seen him). All Romanelli did was qualify himself after you called him into question. I'm not trying to bash you, satie/perm, so I'll move on from here.

Okay so Romanelli's response is all bold, because fuck my eyeballs, right? And he basically talks about how he contributes to the site because he likes, and cares about it. And that he's entitled to his opinion, but it really gets interesting when he talks about his "negative reception".

Romanelli wrote:

I react defensively because pretty much everything said to me here is negative. Why? Because I don't fit the nmold of the ideal BEA user? Because I'm not someone who gets invited to the private skype sessions? Because I have a different view of music from 30-40 years ago because I was actually there? The forums here are a close knit clique, and I believe are the reason why they don't grow. As for my self worth, you have no idea how little self worth I really believe I have, how much my life sucks right now, and how BEA (and helping with album admin as much as I can) helps me to forget just how fucking lonely I am right now. You are entitled to your opinion, and I AM ENTITLED TO MY FUCKING OPINION. I made a comment that maybe the decade you all think is the greatest right now might fade in a few years, and for that, I get a beautiful hour's worth of having to miserably deal with your crap. Whoever you have been in the past...I don't care. I expressed a simple opinion, and I get this crate full of dung from you. Thanks a pantload.

I really feel Romanelli has over-estimated the hate gets on BEA. I get thrown a lot of hate now and then on BEA but it almost always passes within a week or so. That being said, I am a nobody after all. I agree that Romanelli is entitled to his opinion, and he's entitled to his opinion, but by the same logic, permafrost is entitled to shit all over it and smile. And if you have low self-worth and you're being thrown a ton of hate over a music forum, perhaps the internet isn't really for you.

Overall I give this internet rant a 3.4 or so. it wasn't very informative, and was more cringeworthy than entertaining.

nah dude, the guys who did the mutant sounds blog have a radio show on dublab now (listen to this first ep, at least the first song, this hosono & yokoo thing is incredibly sounding) http://dublab.com/vas-deferens-organization-mutant-sounds-radio-09-11-15/

and then there's all the reissue labels and everything, and like archival releases like with Ursula Bogner, she was just a german pharmacist who made some great electronic music privately and now that's out there http://www.discogs.com/Ursula-Bogner-Recordings-1969-1988/master/87483
