Rush is my favorite band of all time, but they're not always prog.

When choosing specifically as a prog band, it's hard not to say Yes.

I really don't understand why you would limit yourself to albums from inside BEA's Top 10,000 at all. I get why you would use Wikipedia or whatever to see what genre certain albums fall under, but at the end of the day if you think something sounds like prog rock and you like it then you should just add it to the chart. If people think you're using the term incorrectly, they will tell you - it's better to make your own mind up than rely on somebody else's label.

There's a large number of prog rock bands, many of which have made more than 20 or 30 albums. Already, the chart is full, and the last entry is at number 3900 on the overall. I knew 10,000 would be a good enough limit given the amount of albums.

And I'm doing this to see what BEA's top 100 prog albums are. I'll listen to the albums on the chart when I get the chance. I'm just wondering what the top 100 are. And like I said, the last entry on the chart right now is in the 4000, and I've only been through around 15 prog bands or so. So limiting myself to 10,000 saved a lot of time. Now, since the lowest is 4,000, I can limit the overall to albums in the top 4,000.

EDIT: I'm listening to "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway." The first five tracks are great.

JMan wrote:

I've heard five Radiohead albums and I can't call them progressive. Not that I'm an expert, but I've heard 26 prog albums and Radiohead is not in that group. Alternative rock is their thing.

Also since the whole "BEA Overall Grunge Chart" didn't go as planned due to the lack of grunge on BEA (and the lack of grunge bands), I'm making a chart for prog, and it's going fantastic right now. There are a lot of prog bands who have done around 40 albums, so It will take a long time. Their are four criteria for the chart:
1. Wikipedia must define the album as "prog rock" or "prog metal" or prog anything within the first two genres listed. After that, it most likely means that there are only a couple prog songs.
2. Because of the large number of prog albums on the site, no albums outside of the top 10,000 may be listed.
3. Obviously, once the chart is full, I will keep going through all of the prog bands I can find in this thread (except Radiohead which neither I or Wikipedia counts as prog).
4. No compilations, but live albums are valid.
I'm going through Dream Theater's albums right now. Just got through Floyd, Yes, Rush, Genesis, King Crimson, and a couple Queen albums are listed. I'll reiterate: I'm going through every band I can find on this thread, but i hope I don't miss anyone because I think two threads of prog rock will give me all the info I need, especially with the full lists people have posted.

It's a little frustrating given the time I'll put into it, but it's mostly fun.

that is because you don't know what you are listening to, the reason why artist from every genre from every country in the world look up to radiohead, it is because they are progress

Hot Rags, Tago Mago, Time (ELO), and Out of the Blue. Progressive rock was not listed within the first two genres on Wikipedia

Dream Theater for me. Though if it can be proven that Radiohead are prog rock, I'll obviously change my vote. As much as OK Computer veered into that territory at times, however, the band have adamantly denied this label and I can't think of anything on any other Radiohead album that could be called "prog".

18. Diablo Swing Orchestra
19. Soft Machine
20. Bacamarte

Something like that maybe.

There's a lot I need to get into, and prog rock is one of my best genres.

1. Kansas: It was only recently that I made the connection these guys were prog. 🫢
2. Pink Floyd. Although I've only heard 3 albums, there are so many Pink Floyd songs I like.
3. Dream Theater: Although repetitive after a while, I really dig their estranged and highly infuenced take on prog.
4. Rush: I can safely say that the early stuff is not my cup of tea and that the 80's to 90's is where prog's at. Geddy Lee's voice was great back then, but have you heard him live? if shit had a voice...
5. Genesis: I'm starting to like the Peter Gabriel now due to my second listen to SEBTP, but I personally love the Phil Collins era more.
6. Queensryche: I told you. 80's.
7. Queen: They've only done a couple of progressive albums, though.
8.Neal Morse: It's not so much his Christianity to me as it is his prog style that combines Dream Theater and Kansas, one time literally with two guest stars.
9. Yes
10. King Crimson.

These are the only prog bands I've heard. And I think I'm on a prog buzz. Definitely gonna try Invisible Touch again later today, and then another Genesis album. And then I'll retry In the Court of the Crimson King.
