David Bowie comes closest.

How am I the first person in this thread to mention Brian Wilson?

I know he didn't write most of his lyrics (he came up with 95% of the thematical content but the actual words were usually transcribed by someone else) but his compositions alone earn him a place here.

There's so many I'd have above anyone on this list actually. I'd understand if it was just kept to solo singer/songwriters but putting Arcade Fire or Led Zeppelin in the mix? 😕

I voted for Lennon because of how prolific a songwriter he was in what was in all actuality a short period of time with the Beatles and for his use of Double entendres in his lyrics. Although I could make a good argument for most of the people on the list. Great job on this poll Behrus58.

As much as I love the Beatles, Bob Dylan is the runaway winner if this title. Honestly, I can't think of anyone who is even in the same league. I've heard some say Cohen would be competitive, but I haven't heard enough of his stuff to say.

Great point. Where the fuck is Smokey Robinson? Robert Johnson? Nas? Even Bill Withers?

As for females, still a great point - I'm just somewhat guilty of not, as of now, having as many Female songwriters in my collection. But how about Joni Mitchell, hell, what about Carole King?

This is also silly for being no "other" option.

Bob Dylan was my easy choice. Wheres the legendary Townes Van Zandt (my number 3)? Where the fuck is Tom Waits (my number 4) or Kristian Mattson ( my number 2) or Josh Ritter (my number 5)?

Anyway, I'm beating a dead horse and I am really just giving this a little hard time. Very incomplete selection though.

I'm quite disappointed Stuart Murdoch isn't on this list.

Anyway, it'd probably be a toss up between John Lennon, Thom Yorke or Win Butler for me.

Interesting to see Elton John on the list. It's actually Bernie Taupin who wrote most of Elton John's lyrics. Anyway I voted for John Lennon.
