With a 6 to 5 to 4 majority, the next film poll will be early cinema 😁

Will get that posted later today.

There are certainly tons of very important short films, some less than one minute. This could be intense...

But back to the list at hand, it inspired me to purchase (500) Days of Summer. Target has a killer buy two get one free sale going right now so priced at $5 I suppose it was one of the free ones. I had a decent haul. Probably gonna drop another bill online before the sale ends for some good horror and/or Criterion deals.

No, If there's a pre-1930's poll next, Ill get a list in, even if I have little time to really catch up on new films. Given I think it should continue where's there's no time limit/exclusion of short films

Yeah, they're actually easier to find than just about any other kind of film because of the public domain thing. There's tons on Netflix too if anybody actually still has that. I don't think you're anyone's gonna find sympathy here from the real movie buffs with silly excuses. Most of y'all probably don't watch foreign movies either. I get it. You like to be able to walk and talk and text and eat and smoke and drink and look away from the screen regularly when you watch movies. I used to be like that too (fun fact: even if you do all that during Captain America or Beavis and Butthead a lot of your criticisms on that film are still invalid no matter how much you claim to have watched). But I'm not going to try to turn what should by all logical means be a K-pop tournament into a classic rock one just because I haven't been exposed to K-pop and am not interested in trying it out. I'd just sit it out, and probably ignore it until I get to the point where it does interest me, and then be so happy that it's there to look at.

As host, your vote is the only one that counts.

Dude we're all thin on the Silent Era. It's natural for several reasons that don't need mentioning. According to my letterbox'd, I've seen only 76 films pre-1930 so I'm in the same boat.

Mercury wrote:

I would be interested in the list to get recs from people more familiar than myself. I'm sure I have many gaps in even the most must-see, essential silent era films. I did end up voting for the pre-30s poll because I feel like it would be great to complete this big undertaking that Hayden has orchestrated. To bring this big many-part look at each era of cinema to a close before stepping back and diving into our biggest extravaganza yet - our new all time ranks. It just seems like a perfect closer to this thing.

Yup

Mercury wrote:

Who knows how many people (let's face it, maybe 1 or 2 or 3 tops but still) will be inspired to dive into watching Passion of Joan of Arc or Sunrise or Intolerance due to the silent era poll. Then that could slightly influence our overall list nicely, maybe Sunrise or whatever gets a few more votes there as a result. Maybe?

For sure. What I like about the decade polls is they encourage me to seek out films I haven't seen. Personally that's how I've treated every decade poll so far. A Silent Era poll would be no different.

Mercury wrote:

But I also agree with CGD that that list may be lighter on participation as a direct result of the fact that silent films are not as popular or easy to get into for the past couple generations. Generally speaking.

Eh, I'm not concerned with participation. Movie buffs will find a way to participate because they don't discriminate against silent films. There's nothing stopping you, me, CGD, or anyone else from seeking out silent films we've never seen before. And they're very easy to seek out. They're all so old, most of them are in the public domain now, easily accessible online. And most of them are barely an hour long. If you only have a Top 10, then just submit a Top 10. Nobody's gonna think negatively of you.
Good call on that showdown Hayden. Wouldn't be surprised if that's the top 4. But don't count out Chaplin and Keaton, or King Vidor or Erich von Stroheim... Nosferatu will likely make its second top ten appearance. Don't know how high Birth of a Nation can go but other Griffith films could perform well. There's Lon Chaney and John Barrymore and Rudolph Valentino and Douglas Fairbanks and... Just saying it would be an awesome list.

For real. How long have we been doing the decade polls? Like two years? After all that, why in the world would we skip the last of those polls, to do an all-time poll, only to then go back to the one we skipped? I don't care if there's a TV show list, 2016 list, actors list, or another genre list in the mix. But just don't do an all-time before finishing all the eras. Hayden, don't put this to a vote. Don't be democratic. You know what makes sense, so just do it.

I had the same problems, and after about number 40 on my list I stopped caring about the ranking of the films and really rushed the rest of it. As a result, I forgot several key films that should have made my list. But it's ok. It's only a survey, and I was happy to participate. I like your movie taste and wish you had participated too. You didn't have to take it seriously. If your list looked bad, nobody was gonna care. Remember how bad my horror list was? (hopefully not, haha)

That's exactly what it was. It took so much out of me just putting together the top 30 that I was just unable to even try to rank the rest them properly. Maybe I should have just submitted the 30 I had; those were the ones I felt most belonged here. For the record I didn't really have anything too unexpected. This was my top 10:

City Lights
Casablanca
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Graduate
Vertigo
The Apartment
Blue is the Warmest Color
Before Sunset
Bonnie and Clyde
Moonrise Kingdom

So yeah kinda basic although I think I did a great job with variety in regards to different kinds of romance and different tones of films.

I understand some people not wanting to do a pre-30s list, and honestly there's nothing I'd like more than an overall top 250, but it only makes sense that we cover that one last time period so that anyone who does benefit from the silent era list (and I'm sure there's some of us, myself included) can rank them accordingly on the big one.

Yeah I think the middling Disney films are more okay than the standard-file Rom-Coms that prop up a bit too frequently, and a number of barely average films that realllllllllllyyyyy stretch the idea of a "romance film" even though they technically could fit (Bruce Almighty). And Im not on the "La La Land" train at all, I think one film that is the ultimate You're Going to Fall Madly In Love With It or Total Eh experience, and I mostly fall in the latter, so one of the ten best "romance" films of all time?.... but there were also some really clever choices here as well as the more familiar great films, so all in all it all balances out nicely.

And if we're doing pre-1930's next... .uh, count me out. I think we could def find a lot of creative choices but my watched log there is a bit too thin to really put much forward, and I think the other options could encapsulate a lot more films and potentially voters, but eh it's a democracy so whatever you do next just keep the good times rollin'.

Tried to make a list a couple times and just wasn't feeling it. Too hard distinguishing "best" from "most romantic" from "most personally relatable" and what not. I never got past 30 before it was just a jumbled mess of confusion.

I understand.

For one, I don't like musicals. Secondly I've been told La La Land is extremely sugarcoated. I don't know if I'd like it. I've been deliberately avoiding it. The only condition I'd watch it in theaters is if was a date movie.

To be honest, it doesn't actually have toooo many music numbers. Outside of the first fifteen minutes, there isn't actually any more typical major 'music dance numbers'. A lot of the songs are just... nice songs. I think it's a really fantastic soundtrack.

And I wouldn't say it's sugarcoated. It's fun, but not sugarcoated. I dunno, give it a shot. If you like it you like it, if you don't then there's no harm done. As long as you go into it with the mindset that you'll like it rather than hate it, you should find yourself enjoying it.

Anyway, a reminder for you guys to vote for whatever the next list will be in the poll in the submission thread.
