In order of album preference....

1969: Led Zeppelin, From Elvis In Memphis, Led Zeppelin II, The Velvet Underground, Five Leaves Left, Tommy, Dusty In Memphis, Space Oddity

2014: (Tentatively) Ray Lamontagne/Supernova, Ty Segall/Manipulator, Pink Mountaintops/Get Back, Timber Timbre/Hot Dreams, The Travis Waltons/Your Neck Is Bleeding, Cracker/Berkeley to Bakersfield, Royal Blood/Royal Blood, Wolfmother/New Crown, Damien Rice/My Favourite Faded Fantasy, MONO/The Last Dawn, Shellac/Dude Incredible, Sharon Van Etten/Are We There

Favorite decades are probably 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s. But they all have more good albums than I have time to listen to.

2004 is very nostalgic for me. I was volunteering as a DJ on a community radio station and there was so much good music out that year.

These are based off of my own personal decades list, whichever year had the highest amount of albums selected.

10's- 2013: Interestingly enough, even though I dislike most of the top 10 in 2013, I have a ton of albums in my top 100 of the decade from it. Melt Yourself Down, Honeys by Pissed Jeans, Better off Dead by Flatbush Zombies, Wakin on a Pretty Daze, and a lot more.

00's- 2000: Coincidentally as with 1997, a Radiohead album and a Modest Mouse album are involved. Along with other favorites like, Lift Yr. Skinny Fists, Rated R, and Deltron 3030.

90's- 1997: the top rated album OK Computer plus many other classics; Ladies and Gentleman We are Floating in Space, Either/Or, Lonesome Crowded West, Boatman's Call etc.

80's- 1982: This was kind of a surprise. Milo Goes to College, Glassworks, 1999, Bad Brains, and some more universal albums like Combat Rock and Thriller.

70's- 1979: I had a feeling this would be my favorite. The Wall, London Calling, Fear of Music, Unknown Pleasures, and some more oddball stuff like Y by The Pop Group and 20 Jazz Funk Greats by Throbbing Gristle.

60's- 1967 is probably the best year in music due to its influence. Period. However, I have more albums in my top 100 from 1969. Some highlights include ; Led Zeppelin, Hot Buttered Soul, In the Court of The Crimson King, Hot Rats, Uncle Meat, The Velvet Underground, EVerybody Knows This is Nowhere.

So ran some statistical analysis on my lists. More precisely, i counted all albums by year present in my top 1100, which basically represents all albums i've rated as a 70-or-better on BEA. Results:

Year	#albums
1957	1
1958	0
1959	0
1960	0
1961	0
1962	0
1963	0
1964	4
1965	6
1966	7
1967	6
1968	5
1969	8
1970	18
1971	17
1972	16
1973	15
1974	17
1975	17
1976	25
1977	22
1978	31
1979	23
1980	26
1981	27
1982	22
1983	30
1984	23
1985	34
1986	35
1987	32
1988	33
1989	19
1990	22
1991	19
1992	16
1993	21
1994	25
1995	20
1996	19
1997	22
1998	12
1999	12
2000	12
2001	10
2002	15
2003	23
2004	18
2005	27
2006	23
2007	27
2008	19
2009	27
2010	22
2011	27
2012	21
2013	40
2014	25
2015	32
2016	25

So according to this, my favorite year of each decade:

1950s: 1957
1960s: 1969
1970s: 1978
1980s: 1986
1990s: 1994
2000s: 2007
2010s: 2013 (so far)

There were a few things in here that surprised me. I was surprised at the low turnout of the 1990s, a decade where i had an ever-increasing music budget (that swelled over $100/month at one point). I was also surprised at recent years of 2013 and 2015, especially that 2013 has the most entries (40) in my top 1100.

HiImViibes wrote:

I know this is as easy as a simple look up on every year and the points the albums released that year have, but that removes most subgectivity, which would make for a short conversation. I'm interested to hear what people have to think about the best year in every decade in terms of the music released in those years. I don't think that using charts is a good reflection in terms of how good the music in a year was as it would be possible for a year with one masterpiece of an album to have more points than a year that had five good albums come out. So in a way this conversation is somewhat less about quality, and a bit more about quantity in terms of good albums released. Feel free to be as subjective as you'd like, as one year being better than another is already a subjective observation. I hope this breeds some good discussion!

I have been thinking about something like this myself and it will be interesting to see if results differ from the official BEA stats. I had been thinking along the lines that members put forward as many of their top tens for any given year as they wish that for them are exceptionally strong (please note not just good but exceptional...be strict with yourself). Each entry would get 1 point for that given year which after some time could be tallied up to give us a result. Could it be something that could be kept track of automatically when an entry is posted? Some drop down box to chose the year that you're voting for before posting a top 10?

It will probably end up mirroring the official BEA stats but you never know. I would be hopeful that members individual tastes and love of certain genre's would have a much better chance of showing up rather than just the usual best sellers for each year.
Yup... here's my running total of those I've rated on this site above a 75 (looks like a few years are sparse and probably just need to realize I forgot that one and this one). And to answer the question (and now I have to go find out which albums cause this data kind of shocked me but not really... mostly that I see a trend). Also I think I rated A LOT of albums in 2011 at a 75 more out of leniency (I loosened up my rating I think, but maybe not).

As to StreetSpirits comment... looks like for me the 68 through 70 spread and the 2005-2006 and the 94-97 spread are my favorite times in music. Also this kind of confirms my claimed musical identity to be the birth of rock n' roll/motown, hippie music, independent/alternative rock.

1959 had 19 albums of a rating 75 or higher
Feel free to be as subjective as you'd like, as one year being better than another is already a subjective observation. I hope this breeds some good discussion!

Of course. It's impossible to not be subjective here. I couldn't possibly choose one year as my favorite from the '90s because it would be a draw between '94 and '95. I see those two years as a convergence of several musical movements that I love all going on at the same time...grunge, post-grunge, industrial rock, power pop, britpop, etc. More music from '94 and '95 suits my musical taste and personality than any other years. I could not possibly pick one year better than the other. For me, those two years are the best, not just of the '90s but of all time.

Perhaps other BEAers have a similar connection to a certain window of time. If so, please share.

1966 - Pet Sounds, two great albums from Simon and Garfunkel, Revolver, If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears, Aftermath, and Blonde on Blonde. That's hard to beat. Blonde on Blonde and Pet Sounds were released the same day.

Close call between 1971 and '78 but I'm going with 1978. Debuts from The Cars, Van Halen, and The Police. Plus good stuff from Elvis Costello, Billy Joel, and The Who.

Ooh, easily comes down to 1983 and '84. Those years truly stood out. I'll go with 1983. A great farewell album from The Police. Great debut albums from Violent Femmes, Tears for Fears, Metallica, and R.E.M. Other highlights include Seven and the Ragged Tiger, Innocent Man, Genesis self-titled, and of course Sports by Huey Lewis

I hate choosing one year from the 90s because it's by far my favorite decade. So I'm not going to. More to come.

2001 - musicforthemorningafter, Toxicity, Is This It, Bleed American, Morning View, Origin of Symmetry, and White Blood Cells, and Amnesiac.

2010s? Lol, rme, smh. Fuck this decade.
