@ hereforashortime. You sound like you really want a new poll to start. If you want to host this comedy list idea, I say go for it! Sounds like fun.

That being said, I'm calling dibs on hosting a sci-fi list. Tentatively November.

Sci-Fi is all yours, I definitely won't envy being the person that has to decide whether or not Star Wars is considered Sci-Fi.

Defining genres is never cut-and-dry. I would approach a comedy list the same way I approached the horror list last October. Remember the discussion about Alien and 'pure horror' films? Well some movies are 'purer comedies' than others. For example, Tommy Boy and Hayden's pick, In Bruges. Both have the comedy genre tag, and both very good. But Tommy Boy is traditional gag laughter; whereas In Bruges wonderfully blends elements of other genres (drama, gangster, thriller). In Bruges isn't funny at all in certain scenes. I'd certainly say In Bruges is a better overall film than Tommy Boy. But on a comedy list, I would have them pretty close.

Anyway..
I'm fine with that, even though Brazil is actually more of a comedy than Underground. Generally though, IMDb is accurate enough I suppose...

Kingdom has a theatrical release, so it's kinda all good.

I'd be iffy on a comedy list (not opposed), but it could be tricky. Wouldn't mind a few good laughs though, a good list for BEA to let out their goofy side.

That being said, something more on the violent side of things like In Bruges would probably be in my top 5.

I wonder what is the difference between film and album lists. The film lists often seem to focus a little bit more on the "seriosity" aspect but there is a change going on. I am watching such lists now for nearly 40 years and I guess they become more and more "pop".
I say that even though I duobt a lot the concept of objectivity. But I guess there is the possibility to try to take a step backwards from your own interests.
What are those personals interests:
1. Power - My list is the official list
2. Control - I define what's good - or - Credit - I learned and I know
3. Participation - I was there when maybe not all, but surely some of the very best works came out.
I guess this is even the most important aspect, because it gives your life sense: YOU live in exciting times. it seems an unbearable thought, that in the art that you like the best times were maybe even before you were born. There is a fear hidden in it, al senseless life covered up in mediocracy.
If you learned to accept it, there is still:
4. Distinction - Which I can't find in the lists here so often, maybe at the point of disctinction a list is a provocation in taste. It already starts with the love of what others call "trash" and then it follows it's own path, you start to see the most exciting things in works of art (film, music) others find extremely boring. But you let the other know, that you know everything they value high too and that you once liked it too but yes, once. Distinction always carries the secret of understanding more, you may learn it in school when there is the fist kid who doesn't listen to chart music. And you will be a victim of distinction for many years to come.
But what about the very first distinction, the objetvive versus the personal?
I guess it's brave to argue that a movie by someone who lives from quoting and who is deeply stuck in the first grade of distinction, the love for what others call trash, should be the greatest movie of all time.
Why?
I don't know.
I guess a director, actor, camera operator who does something for the first time maybe opens aspects of a new language, may open doors for others. We can follow this in film and in pop music. The result are the lists with Eisentein and Welles or with Beatles and Skip James. More difficult is the second aspect: someone who does something in the best possible way. Here we will always have discussions and fights. But that's fine, as it proves there is no objectivity. But there are arguments and maybe better ones than to find out mistakes in continuity or not plausible camera ankles.
But maybe, by going back to 1. - 4. there is a special aspect of lists that keeps us fascinated: They tell our story.
That's what I want from a list, I want to meet an interesting person, I want to wonder why that person chose this and that and what the person thinks and feels.
That's why I am here.
Well also because the album list here tells me about my own changes in perspective.

If you want to know about me. Well I haven't made up my mind about it for several years. Maybe I would make an other list today, maybe none at all, but here is one from four or five years ago, it's not better or worse than any other list and I could even mention where the mentioned aspects from 1 to 4 are to be found.

Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau - Sunrise (1927)
Albert Levin - Pandora and the Flying Dutchman (1951)
Walt Disney - Fantasia (1940)
Carl Theodor Dreyer - Vampyr (1932)
René Clair - Sous le toits de Paris (1932)
D. W. Griffith - Intolerance (1916)
Erich von Stroheim - Greed (1924)
John Ford - Cheyenne autumn (1964)
Jean Luc Godard - Je vous salue Marie / Anne Marie Mieville - Le livre de Marie (1984)
Eric Rohmer - Les nuits de la pleine lune (1984)
I'm afraid Pulp Fiction has not aged well 😐 I enjoyed it when it came out. I tried to re-watch it lately: all the long silly ironic yakking has surfaced, and I found it not as surprising and not as good.

As for the list, some surprising omisssions (unless I missed them in the list):
Lolita (Kubrick)
Blow Up (Antonioni)

Plus some personnal favorites :
Zelig - Woody Allen (such an exhilarating film)
Baisers Volés (Stolen Kisses) - François Truffaut

It's not a lot of work. I usually did a mid-way tally, and then a final tally. Just have to have some free time to post the entire list.

BEA's Overall Top 250 felt like closure after over two years of almost constantly doing decade lists, year lists, genre lists, etc. I kinda like that we're taking a break.

However there's nothing preventing anyone from starting a new poll. hereforashortime, if you have an idea for a new list want to host it, I'd say go for it. I would def participate (unless it's something I'm not familiar with). But you'd have to be willing to put in the time/effort...all the tallying and revisions, etc.
Dig you list CellarDoor, thanks for sharing 😄 I'd gladly tally it up and edit the overall list, but I fear that'd be unfair 🤣 Some great recs though.

I've kept the unwatched films I think you'd like the most (or just personal recommendations). I really think you'd enjoy most of them.

My unwatched is somewhere around 35... just got around to Apocalypse Now for the first time the other day, and was absolutely blown away. Easily my favourite from Coppola. Can't believe I procrastinated watching it for so long.
The Last Crusade
Aliens
Children of Paradise (in full... I've watched about half)
Terminator 2
The Jerk
Terminator
Gone With The Wind
Nashville
The Green Mile
The Matrix
King Kong
Battle Royale
Saving Private Ryan
Who else totally effed up and realized they left some good stuff off their list? I realized I could've moved some stuff around to put on;

El Topo or Santa Sangre (We should have had a Jodorowsky in their somewhere)

World on a Wire (A criterion movie I was glad I watched)

I didn't put "Pi" on either, dammit.

That was actually the highest ranked of the bunch (around #280 or so). It's a stellar film. Just be prepared for literally anything when watching it. It's utter insanity. Absolutely beautiful and brilliant though. I've heard a lot of musicians cite it as a favourite.
