Well considering this was a best "metal" album in general tournament, Priest/Maiden/Sabbath etc. absolutely do belong. While they may not be "extreme metal" (which was not the subject of the tournament) they are still considered integral parts of metal's history, and to suggest otherwise is just pure ignorance.

If we did a best extreme metal tournament, a best death metal tournament, or a best black metal tournament, or whatever, then sure, they wouldn't be included. But this was a general metal tournament in the efforts of having mass appeal (and participation).

And despite that, you'll notice that the top 4 winners consist of a black metal album, a doom metal album, and a thrash metal album, so the genres were relatively varied.

Ruins of Beverast's Rain Upon the Impure has the darkest, most oppressive atmosphere and makes a lot of this s*** look like gospel music, you should check it out if you can appreciate an album for themes/atmosphere like Sigur Ros's Agaetis Byrjun or Swans' Soundtracks For the Blind.

This is a vinyl rip of a reissue of Rain Upon the Impure which fixes shoddy production problems. It's awesome.

Yep good stuff. I found out about a few I was unaware of and one of the best I'd not heard before was the winner.

I agree this was the situation, and continues to be. Of course you're on the shortlist of people with a great enough amount of insight into the genre to get conversations stimulated. When you and the rest who have the most thoughtful opinions stop posting their opinions, then of course conversation will dry up all the more.

There are a couple ties this week - Dopethrone/Symbolic and Aghora/Northern Star are both tied. The next vote will win each matchup.

I was shocked to see that somehow it's outside our top 750. It's brilliant. I just relistened to it and I feel at least some of the (rightful) hyperbole heaped on their debut, Paranoid and Master of Reality is equally earned here. Vol 4 is my favorite Sabbath album.

Okay. I like it. Solid system.

So I'll now try my best to drag myself away from listening to Heartwork and Bergtatt over and over and over again whilst causing myself great pain decidinh which I'll vote for between 'em in a couple months or whatever. 🙁
