Yann wrote:

Well, we may also consider that we rate a song by an artist regardless of any existing live version, or radio edit, etc.
I think most of the time we do just that: rating the standard version of "a" song. We don't even think of live version when we rate it, do we ?
And even if accasionnaly someone rate a live version better than a studio version of a song, I don't think it's very relevant to the global rate of "a" song.
Cheers

the song you would be rating is the song that appears on a particular album. Your example of Bohemian Rhapsody appears on multiple albums (including several different live performances). Do you prefer the studio version from A Night at the Opera, the live killers version, the live at wembley version or the live at the bowl version? Every track on BEA is rated according to the album that it appears on.

If the multiple live versions are the issue, at the moment you can filter out compilation versions on the relevant artist page, if you could also filter out live versions, you'd just be left with the studio versions of each track (not taking into account the 'various artist' compilation album appearances that the track appears on). If BEA had some kind of 'live' attribute, it might give you a 'cleaner' view of the best tracks (this attribute would have to be held at track level in the case that an individual album has have both live and studio performances) but wouldn't entirely get around the issue of the ratings not being bundled together as the problem is far more complex than that.

Quote:

As for the "intro", "part one" of songs, etc, most of the time they are named like that, I think.

A lot of rap albums have intros and outros etc. If you bundled these track names together you'd be incorrectly mixing up the ratings of tracks on different albums. Not bundling tracks together is the safer route.

The only way to do this properly would be to manually check that each version is exactly the same, which is not really possible given the volume of tracks in the database. If BEA tried to do this automatically and assumed that tracks with the same name from a particular artist were the same, it would lead to errors with different songs being incorrectly bundled together, and not distinguishing live versions, tracks with common titles e.g. intro, extended versions, radio versions, remixes etc and some versions of the same song could legitimately be rated higher than others. The effort to try and do this is simply not worth it for the 'benefit' at the end.

I'm not familiar with website technique, but isn't it possible to merge rate and rank of songs having the same name and artist, regardless of the album ?

That said, it's an album website, so this issue is secondary anyway!

yes, unfortunately it's almost impossible to get around this without going through over a million different tracks and working out if the same version appears on another album or if it's a remix, a shorter version, a live version, a version in a different language etc so it's something that's very difficult to get around.

                          Hi,

It seems that:

a/One can rate the same song twice if appearing on both album and compilation.
b/ Regardless of point a), such songs can have two diffirent ranks (and possibly rates): ex : Bohemian Rapshody, and many others.

Best regards,
