bobbyb5 wrote:

Austin?

Austin has a strong musical history, beyond being the "live music capitol of the world."

Psychedelia arguably started there, with 13th Floor Elevators, and was carried forward by the Butthole Surfers (San Antonio and Austin active), Scratch Acid (who would become The Jesus Lizard), Ed Hall/Cherubs, and several smaller groups that formed a distinctly Texan brand of psych/noise; though from different Texan cities, The Red Krayola and Charalambides also resided and performed (Charalambides members still do) in Austin.

Austin also has a strong country strain, including at least Robert Earl Keene, Willie Nelson, and Larry McMurtry's son, though you would have to get Romanelli to tell you more about that.

There's Spoon, the most consistently acclaimed musical group of the '00s, according to metacritic.

Recently, due to a member of S U R V I V E scoring Stranger Things, there's been an explosion of interest in Holodeck Records, and Pitchfork even wrote an article on the burgeoning Austin synth scene surrounding that label (which I think is hilarious, because it's so barely existent in the city and the Holodeck groups rarely play out).

Austin has also been developing an improvised music scene (which I briefly describe in the intro notes to my Astral Spirits chart), though we are far behind Chicago, New York, San Francisco/LA. Expect to see names from Austin appearing more and more though within the next five years (if you pay attention to the music anyways).

And then every now and then there's one-offs that are well-acclaimed. Troller's album from last year is an example; Cross Record from a couple of years ago (?); USA/MEXICO from this year; And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead from the early '00s; Stars of the Lid and Explosions In The Sky from the mid '00s...

It's a strong musical city, but far from the strongest. As mentioned earlier, rising rents are to blame, due to everyone wanting to move here for the music (and other cool) culture...

Also, the Chantels, the very first one.

Nice! It is a bit ironic we often say Motown to describe a sound, yet a lot of it didn't come from there. It's like you have to be a musicologist to use the word right. And then what, it's just R&B if not from Motown? This is why I get frustrated with strict use of genres.

RE: Kansas City - just reminded me of that song, not that it was written there. Enjoy!

I used the word non-Motown literally, to mean they weren't on the Motown label. And therefore not from Detroit, but NY. And most of them were ;involved with Phil Spector or Carole King. Phil Spector's famous Wall of Sound production style is almost as associated with girl groups as Motown is. Motown didnt produce nearly the amount of girl groups as NY did, but definitely the most successful: The Supremes etc. Back in those days, the 60s girl groups were considered to be pop or rock and roll, and R & B was a whole other thing. Nowadays we use these terms differently than they did then.

Nice! I didn't know that. I love that Motown/Wall of Sound stuff and use terms interchangeably myself. Did Spector ever produce any of those Motown bands or did the two scenes develop totally independently?

No, Motown was totally self- contained. They had their own producers, writers, musicians, everything. They didnt use anyone from the outside. You had to be under contract. And if u were under contract at Motown, u couldnt work anywhere else. Kind of like the old movie studios. Yeah, the NY and Motown scenes developed independently. None of the same people were involved.

The Velvet Underground, Miles Davis, Sonic Youth, A Tribe Called Quest, Talking Heads, Ella Fitzgerald, Nas, Television, Galaxie 500, Animal Collective, Wu-Tang Clan, Notorious B.I.G., The Antlers, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Patti Smith, Buddy Rich, MF DOOM, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Swans, Ramones, Joan Baez, The Stokes, Gang Starr, Mos Def, LCD Soundsystem, Mamas & Papas, Big Daddy Kane, El-P, Charles Bradley, Busta Rhymes, Ui, Carole King, Billie Holiday, John Zorn, RUN-DMC, Vampire Weekend, KRS-One, Cannibal Ox, Richard Hell, Battles, Steely Dan, AZ, Blondie, Brand New, Camp Lo,The Hold Steady, Grizzly Bear, The Lounge Lizards, New York Dolls, Jay-Z, MGMT, Big L, The National, TV On The Radio, Interpol, Simon & Garfunkel, Sonny Rollins, Slick Rick, Eric B. & Rakim, Cecil Taylor, Cannonball Adderley, Action Bronson, Ka, Kool Keith, Pete Rock, Salt-N-Pepa, De La Soul, Norah Jones, Maxwell, Le Tigre, The Walkmen, Yeasayer, Blood Sweat & Tears, Suicide, Johnny Thunders, The Drifters, Harry Nilsson, Laura Nyro, Kiss, Billy Joel...

If I was more informed with which artists were based in New York as well, the list would surely be longer. I think the only other American city that stacks up to it is LA...

Totally agree. But a big factor in why NYC, and then LA, produced so many big names, is because those were the locations of the music industry. For decades New York was the center of the music industry and then in the late 60s LA became the bigger center. So that's why music from California really took off. In other words, they kind of had an unfair advantage.

Who's more likely to get discovered? A band playing in Kansas or a band playing in NYC?
