Rare Earth's Get ready is the obvious choice here and I think it's miles ahead of the original. The dude's voice was just made for the song. I also like he doesn't unnecessarily hold notes during the chorus. Honestly, i think the original is too tame either way.
Her first is the best. It has the most good ones on it. Then after that they each had a couple good ones on it. Except for get nervous which sucked all the way around. Her band was really good I thought, especially on Wuthering Heights and Little Paradise. Theyre just awesome on those two.

Rare Earth is another example of a Motown artist covering Motown hits. They were one of the only rock bands on the label. Solid jams but I think I prefer the originals.

Im just referring to the short 3 minute live version. The long album workout really doesn't mean anything to me, but the three-minute single version is what I'm talking about.

Normally i would too, but even tho Rare Earth is hardly an all-time great act, the guy's singing on Get Ready is everything i want a rock singer to sing like. And the sound of his drums on that is just perfect to me.Just the whole record itself is a kind of perfection for me. I cant explain any of this, but all i know is how much I love hearing it. Go figure.
Okay whatever, they didn't produce the cover, but for the record, all three are still alive.

Quote:

An elaborate solid production? It was the worst kind of 80s dance crap.

I like 80s dance crap. Bad production would be the overstuffed, un-dynamic EDM trash being churned out this decade. I'm not an anti-corporate, anti-synthsesizer purist like a lot of hardcore music fanatics, I just listen to whatever provides a good tune. Usually, 80s music was miles beyond 2000s and 2010s pop. Kim Wilde's version of "You Keep Me Holdin' On" brings out the best elements of the track.

Quote:

And the original was just a downbeat emphatic (whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean) standard pop hit? Downbeat? That record has one of the speediest tempos ever.

Downbeat meaning the thump, not the tempo. If anything, the 1966 original is too speedy and doesn't not groove nearly the same way. The synth bassline and countermelodies in the cover work extremely well, in my opinion. It isn't just some cheap bastardization.
I especially like the CCR and RHCP suggestions you made.

The video of the bowie and jagger is like part of my childhood. Its so MTV.

Hehe - yup.

Was this actually Motown?

Nah, it was just 80s style dance crap. But, there WAS some good faux-Motown in the 80s. Songs that were intentional Motown imitations. Like a couple Culture Club hits, and Human League's "Mirror Man". Theres more good ones but i can't think of them right now. There was a lot. ABC had a couple decent ones.

Here's a real twist on the usual Motown being covered. Rather than someone covering a Motown song, Martha Reeves HERSELF made a faux-Motown record covering a non motown song. Its Van Morrison's Wild Night. And its FANTASTIC. Better than anything she did at motown. It just EXPLODES. And i love van Morrison's hit, but this is even more awesome.

And I'd agree the 80s were an interesting retrospective time- trying to get that 50s/60s sounds back or something.

I was born in the 80s. Parents music was from that time period, so naturally the combination of the two helped me really like music from that time period. I wonder what caused that retrospective (feel like more so than any other period).

It was like the golden age of america or something.

It wasn't uncommon for a song to be performed by more than 1 of those groups. The originals are way better than rockier covers though, I wish there were collections of those songs on 13" LPs so ppl wouldn't have to keep switching between singles.

Some Motown covers of Motown songs are pretty good. Sometimes you can't decide what you like better. The one that comes to mind is Heard it Through the Grapevine, first by Gladys Knight & the Pips and then Marvin Gaye. They're not very similar so maybe that's why I like both of them. Motown albums were filled with covers that were previously hits by other Motown acts. This was taken to extremes when Bonnie Pointer, who was then on motown, made an album of nothing but Motown covers. it was pretty good anyways.
