I would say it's either Beside You or Cypress Avenue. And of course I am right 🤣 🤣

It's Cypress Avenue.

So of course you are right.

Since when has your omniscient objective view of music been wrong? 🤣

Kidding aside, Cypress Avenue is a definite contender. Into the Mystic is just better cause the bass line. haha - idk it just has this deeply pensive, soulful, and sexual thing going on that just really can't be topped in my book. You know, the Bible of Omniscient Objective Views of Music?

eno and bjork are def the two obvious/overwhelmingly correct choices, as many others have said
most of my fav artists were always solo, tbh

You prefer his solo stuff? That sounds nuts to me, but tbh only ever heard one of his solo records. Wasn't swayed that way. What is his best work iyo?

I actually don't know anything about Beethoven and his dad... enlighten us.

Re: Mozart ... I probably did mean him, because Beethoven was such a hack and was probably just trying to relive Mozart's life and music 🤣

From Wikipedia:

Born in Bonn, then the capital of the Electorate of Cologne and part of the Holy Roman Empire, Beethoven displayed his musical talents at an early age and was taught by his father Johann van Beethoven and by composer and conductor Christian Gottlob Neefe. At the age of 21 he moved to Vienna, where he began studying composition with Joseph Haydn and gained a reputation as a virtuoso pianist. He lived in Vienna until his death. By his late 20s his hearing began to deteriorate, and by the last decade of his life he was almost completely deaf. In 1811 he gave up conducting and performing in public but continued to compose; many of his most admired works come from these last 15 years of his life.

... ... ...

Beethoven's first music teacher was his father. He later had other local teachers: the court organist Gilles van den Eeden (d. 1782), Tobias Friedrich Pfeiffer (a family friend, who provided keyboard tuition), and Franz Rovantini (a relative, who instructed him in playing the violin and viola).[2] From the outset his tuition regime, which began in his fifth year, was harsh and intensive, often reducing him to tears; with the involvement of the insomniac Pfeiffer there were irregular late-night sessions with the young Beethoven being dragged from his bed to the keyboard.[10] Beethoven's musical talent was obvious at a young age. Johann, aware of Leopold Mozart's successes in this area (with his son Wolfgang and daughter Nannerl), attempted to promote his son as a child prodigy, claiming that Beethoven was six (he was seven) on the posters for Beethoven's first public performance in March 1778

Did you mean Mozart, when he broke away from his dad?
I actually don't know anything about Beethoven and his dad... enlighten us.

Astral Weeks trumps everything he did before or after summed together. It's just so mindblowingly better than everything else in his discography.

The stuff Them produced was awesome. I can't stand the guy these days. I saw him live and was very disappointed. He was sloppy drunk and didn't actually "sing" a damn thing. Waste of my money.

If I have to see one more group of drunk girls holding a beer in one hand and shouting the lyrics to "Brown-Eyed Girl" one more time....ugh.

Them released 2 albums with Morrison. 2. Of the 30 songs on them, Van wrote only 11. He had barely scratched the surface of his talent when he went solo in 1966.

Since, he's released 36 studio albums. The album that contains "Brown Eyed Girl" was released without his consent, and he is, to this day, stiffed on all royalties from the song. He hates it, too. So you can't give him too much blame for drunk girls. You should enjoy them more!

His body of work includes Astral Weeks. Moondance. St. Dominic's Preview (that right there eclipses the entire career of Them, with and without him). His Band And The Street Choir. Tupelo Honey. He had a string of albums between '68 and '72 that most artists never get close to. He may be a drunk now...but how many in their careers haven't been? So...I'm not buying Van Morrison in this conversation. Nope.

Spot on

Lol, Astral Weeks alone is a staggering masterpiece of art the likes of which will never be heard again, and renders Them almost completely irrelevant. Thank God he went solo.

He's no Paul McCartney but a pianist/composer by the name of Ludwig van Beethoven did pretty good once he broke away from his dad, music teachers and everyone else, and went solo. I recommend his stuff.
Well, I count four bands who made four great songs. Velvet being one of them.

As to Van & Them: Them made 1 good song, Van 0. Van is just a girl’s singer, like Leonard Cohen. (How I love extreme positions. I know, they are silly, though.)

Idk. VU only made three albums and on those albums I count all together about four great ones. really doesn't seem quite enough to qualify you as one of the greatest bands ever.
