Germany is also one of the most significant nations in the development of hard rock (heavy psych acts in particular) as well as heavy metal (traditional, power, speed, thrash -- you name it, its here).

Right. not just synth-pop and eurodance but just about every electronic music originated in Germany from electronic Rock to much techno to ambient right through to today with minimal techno, minimal house, the best examples of all these you could make a case are from Germany

Someone should mention France. There are, of course quite a lot of German Bands who have "made" it into the English speaking world. But we tend to judge a band by its success in the US/UK. The great thing about France is they don’t care a bit about how their music is received in non-French countries.

Only about 300k people live there, yet such fantastic artists like Björk and Sigur Rós are from there. There's also Germany which was responsible for allot of revolutionary music (especially in the 1970's). Bands like Can and Kraftwerk were pretty much single handily responsible for the whole electronica genre, and you can see just how much of an impact they have left on a huge part of the industry ever since. Can were also a big influence on hip hop just to add to it all.

Iceland based on the population size. The number of decent to great acts from there is very impressive. Ok saying Germany but that's a fair size country. Same for somewhere like brazil. Iceland is tiny, about the same population as some cities in the uk. I love a bit Italian prog, so if prog is your thing then Italy 70s is for you.

I think the last time this came up I was still representing my belief that Japan is in my [subjective] runners for this question. I obviously have a very great appreciation for Poland, Germany, and other countries just the same but I still think Japan is still at the top of my list. I mean, I even made a chart and listening log about it.

There's a lot of countries in Africa!

Here's a tasting menu of sorts. Think I have 25-30 countries on that list... ish. Too lazy to count.

Recently, I've been trying to discover the music of Burkina Faso. Everything I've given a spin from there seems to be really intricate and quite beautiful.

Quote:

This completely, although a shout out for Cymru

Yeah, I've always hoped one day BEA would break the UK into the separate countries, but oh well. Would love to dive into a 50 greatest Welsh albums, or something along those lines.

If I had to pick one from Africa it would be Mali, or Senegal.
Elsewhere would probably be Brazil or Japan.

I'm a big fan of symphonic rock. so Northern Europe gets my attention. As the home of Within Temptation, After Forever, Epica, Ayreon, ReVamp, and Delain, Holland/Netherlands gets my vote.

Italy runs a close second with all their great progressive rock rock groups through the years, and the more current alt-metal group Lacuna Coil.

No shortage of great acts out of Germany as well.
There's also Germany which was responsible for allot of revolutionary music (especially in the 1970's). Bands like Can and Kraftwerk were pretty much single handily responsible for the whole electronica genre, and you can see just how much of an impact they have left on a huge part of the industry ever since.
Absolutely. Its no exaggeration to say Germany was single-handedly responsible for electronic music in the 70s. Today it's still the best country for electronic music, in quality and quantity. And also probably responsible for starting progressive rock. a certain kind anyway.

Cool! I was just thinking of starting a thread for non-English speaking music.

As to your question I have no idea. I'm exploring Japanese stuff right now, inspired by the new Cornelius album:

Also been playing this EP a lot (sadly it's too short to qualify for BEA). Taiwanese Math Rock, at it's finest (for all I know).
