Not necessarily. Any of the masterpieces aren't that far behind it. Many of the masterpieces keep up with TMR's consistency and degree of emotional/conceptual expression (or near it) for good portions of their running times -- just not quite as thoroughly and/or to as great an extent. The difference of +/- 0.1 ratings point is very little, almost imperceptible without great familiarity; 0.2 is minimal, more perceptible, but would probably require great familiarity to really notice; +/- 0.3 is marginal, becoming more evident but still not glaring ... To most, the differential probably wouldn't seem significant until +/- 0.5, but I probably wouldn't say "blatant/obvious" until approx +/- 0.8-1.0 -- and even that is providing one is fairly familiar with the works being compared.

The only pop/rock acts that I've found two 10/10 masterpieces from so far are:
That Band I'm not allowed to mention - Revolver/Sgt. Peppers
The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers/Exile on Main Street
Stevie Wonder - Innervisions/Fullfillingness' First Finale

Actually, Lick My Decals Off Baby.

Upon listening to it each time, I always feel it has that potential. But while no doubt exceptional, each time I end up disagreeing. It's hard to say why, except that its production is a mitigating factor. But I'd have to revisit it to go into further detail. On the surface, it doesn't appear much different than TMR, and it seems like it should at least be half as successful (if not more than that) -- but it's also proof that TMR is a work of incredibly singular genius that can't be matched, even by a set of similar sounding songs, but that it was much more composed and calculated than its music at first suggests.

The production is adequate; besides, the songs matter more, and they are more composed and calculated than even on TMR. Safe as Milk at 8.5 while Lick My Decals Off Baby is at 7 makes absolutely zero sense when your favourite rock album is TMR. Other than that, Shiny Beast, and Doc at the Radar Station (and maybe Ice Cream for Crow) should be 7.3+ at least.

I would like to note that I've listened to TMR hundreds of times and assimilated it much more thoroughly than Lick My Decals Off so far, so it is perfectly plausible that my rating could be upgraded with future revisits. Didn't mean to imply otherwise, if I did.
I'll see if it changes the next time I listen to it, but it made sense to me before. It just wasn't nearly such an emotionally impinging experience as TMR. Every facet was weaker, mitigated, and this adds up over the course of an album. As I've said multiple times though, it is entirely possible there is more to it and I hope that's the case.

Not sure which Cave albums should be considered classics, but what I do know is that he is the guy who has maybe the the most consistent discography ever. Many people prefer The Boatman's Call, Tender Part and Let Love In, while my favourites are The Good Son and Murder Ballads. His 21st century inputs are just as good, only Nocturama has failed to reach the cult status, and it's still a great album which I personally love.

For as good a 5 album run as anyone ever. Depends what you class a masterpiece though? I'd maybe only say innervisions was.

I'd throw in Stevie Wonder Presents: Syreeta (1974) as well. It's pretty much a Stevie Wonder album - he produced, wrote or co-wrote all the song, and played lots of the instruments.

Hey cheers. Never come across that one, though I know the name from stevies own stuff. Definitely will check that.

Is your definition of a masterpiece on the order of "one of the most extraordinary, astonishing works of art in the history of music"?

Or is it more in line with "a consistently enjoyable experience that never/rarely flags"?

Maybe not "music history" but in comparison to what was coming out at that specific time, so it stands out.

Thanks, that makes sense. For me, those are usually 7.5/10 or maybe 8/10, but I often call those "masterpieces by any normal measure" (or something similar), so such a criteria is perfectly reasonable too. And a 9/10 (masterpiece) on my scale would be a work that stands out even among and above those, a work that takes its art to such an astounding and extraordinary degree of expression that it has no (or very few) peers at whatever it is doing, whether compared yearly, by decade or all time.

Apologies if this question comes across wrong but many of the albums I've seen chosen seem to have plenty of equals/superiors in any given year especially from, say, 1967 on up.

What are your definitions of masterpiece?

(second question is what many of the selections seem to be to me)

(I'm not sure if one is more "objectively" right or wrong than the other, but I'm curious anyway)
