I almost forgot - also if you like classical music and rock music you might like Muse. It's not the most inspiring piece, but Muse is influenced by classical music (came out onstage to classical music, etc.) and you can hear it in the music.

Not a newer album. I feel they got a bit boring after Black Holes and Revelations.

Do you like "space rock"? Do you like cool piano, guitar, drum, and bass parts with belting falsettos? Then you'll at least like Muse even if they get annoying after a while. As a bassist, I can't deny the bass work is some of the absolute best rock bass in the past 20 years.

Idk - I think I'd start with Absolution (that's what got me into the band), and then maybe from there try out either Showbiz (their debut - so if you like a more rough sound) or Black Holes and Revelations (if you like a bit more polished sound of the same thing).

That's kind of my beef with Muse - I feel if you've heard one song you've heard them all (obviously an exaggerated statement). They definitely have great songs across their career, but I do feel they follow a very similar formula for their songwriting and once you figure out that formula it becomes quite boring.

I like the Who, but I have to agree that Tommy and Quadrophenia aren't worth the payoff in listening to them. Maybe they didn't age well.

Something I've learned since joining this site is some of the most iconic artists don't actually have great albums. They have AMAZING songs/efforts - but maybe 50/50 of them don't have amazing albums. IDK - that's just something that I thought as I looked at comparing the discography of an artist I love like Little Richard vs Radiohead.

I suppose then there's that pretentious bit of what an album is and if it matters.

Also different bands are popular and iconic in different countries. Here in Serbia (and the rest of Eastern Europe I guess) Deep Purple is for example very highly regarded, probably held at the same level as Led Zeppelin. And Scorpions and CCR too. While Springsteen, Dylan, The Who or Joy Division aren't really popular here.

Only Scaruffi has a concrete/unbiased understanding of good music. 🤣

I agree for the most part, but as an example, I don't think their albums hold up next to Pink Floyd's, or Led Zeppelins. And I say that having growing up as a fan of "alternative" in the 80s and 90s.

But yeah, artists like Chuck Berry, Elvis. Little Richard weren't really album oriented, and that would explain some of the Radiohead bump. I think compared to other music rating sites, there is more recency bias here...which is probably a good thing for the most part because it's not like all great music was made before 1990.

Recorded musically - I totally agree. I have yet to find much redeeming qualities past their My Generation single, even if amazing bassist and lively show.

Yeah, they dropped a couple duds after that, but at their peak, they were in the most rarified of air.

Having seen them live only enhances this appreciation as well.

The Who.

My Generation, The Who Sell Out, Live at Leeds, and Who's Next are all solid. A few tracks are great, but overall these albums are not amazing, merely solid. Who's Next is not top 100 material if you ask me. But whatever, I get it. It's not these albums I have a problem with.

That's the best part, actually. This sound actually grew on me after some time. But yes, it was strange/boring at first.
