Hurricane Fighter Plane maybe the single greatest experimental rock song. All your picks are great but in particular I really like Facelift, Frownland, Sister Ray, and Walrus Hunt.

This never happened in the greatest albums tournaments but i'd like to see the opinions and reasons why.

Eskimo Vs Not Available

Both fantastic. But for me i have to go with Not Available for two reasons.

1 - Ships A Going Down. This song is ridiculous. If there was a genre for "Hardcore Experimental" this would be the defining song. The musicianship on the entire album is amazing but especially on Ships a Going Down it is truly genius.

2 - This album is The Resident's most crazy, experimental, and most different than all their rest, and when you look at their catalogue and some of the crazy stuff they have made, an album would have to be genius and really really far out and to accomplish the task and that is what "Not Available is."

I prefer Eskimo myself but i enjoy Not Available also very much. Everytime i listen to Eskimo i get that icy feeling, the soundscapes are so real. Im hunting a walrus with the natives, doing what they are doing. Its so damn real album.

In my opinion, I feel most Beatle songs are experimental, I feel this because I am a bit of a 'Beatle Maniac' - I like collecting Outtakes and Bootlegs - and through these snippets I understand more how each song is special. 😄

Recording of Strawberry Fields Forever began on November 24, 1966 and completed on December 9, 1966 but then was edited by Martin and Emerick. It was not released until February 13, 1967 which is why many use 1967 as its year.

Little Sister was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman and first released as a single in 1961 by Elvis Presley, who turned it into a #5 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 in the UK. The song was later covered by Dwight Yoakam, Robert Plant, Ry Cooder and others. I didn’t consider Cochran’s song because it came out in 1958 and to less commercial success.

The Twist gave birth to the Twist dance craze. The song was written and originally released in 1959 by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters but was only a minor 1960 hit. The Twist song and dance were popularized in 1960 when the song was covered by Chubby Checker. His single reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 19, 1960 and then set a record by being the only single to reach #1 in two different chart runs when it topped the chart again on January 13, 1962.

Like most progressive/experimental songs those I chose often had older generations scoffing.

"Strawberry Fields Forever" was recorded in 1966. Elvis was rock and roll and “Summertime Blues" (1958) Eddie Cochran is just as much a precedent to that song. I have to disagree with you and the only songs on your list are actually experimental rock are these songs. I don't mean to be harsh but the "Twist" and "Little Sister" experimental rock you must be joking.

The Beach Boys-Good Vibrations-1966
The Beatles-Strawberry Fields Forever-1967
The Rolling Stones-Sympathy for the Devil-1968
Led Zeppelin-Whole Lotta Love-1969

Progression tends to happen slowly in an evolutionary manner. There are not always complete or great differences with songs that preceded. The songs I listed were different from the norm and often had emulators and later became considered standard fare themselves.

RFNAPLES I agree with everything you have except these are not experimental rock songs. Experimental ROCK experiments with the basic elements of the genre, and/or which pushes the boundaries of common composition and performance technique. All of these songs are still basic songs in form and chord usage even if "Like a Rolling Stone" goes for six minutes it's still a simple blues folk rock song.

What I chose to list were progressive songs for each year of the 60s. I chose to include songs that took steps forward, improved, advanced, or developed rock of the day. Those songs made progress, new sounding music, in other words were progressive. They could have been the Greatest Experimental Rock Songs at the time!

Progressive Rock came in many shapes and sizes, but it can be loosely defined as music that attempts to combine rock and psychedelic with classical, symphonic, and literary elements. Progressive Rock has its origins in the British psychedelic scene of the late 60s. Inspired by the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper, the first wave incorporated elements of European and classical music into rock. Progressive Rock expands the limits of rock & roll. It tends to be traditionally melodic, literary, and oriented toward classically trained instrumental technique.

Sometimes it is called Art Rock which is more likely to have experimental or avant-garde influences, placing novel sonic texture above Progressive Rock’s symphonic ambitions. Experimental Rock is tangentially related to Art Rock, yet it is more challenging, noisy and unconventional.

Also sometimes known as “classical rock”—bands playing suites, not songs; borrowing riffs from classical composers instead of the founders of rock n’ roll; using language closer to poets than to rhythm and blues artists. One should not be confused of course with all the related styles: Album Rock, Art-Rock/Experimental, Avant-Prog, Canterbury Scene, Experimental Rock, Kraut Rock, Neo-Prog, Noise-Rock, Obscuro, Post-Rock/Experimental, Progressive Metal, Prog-Rock/Art Rock, etc.
