I actually found a band that might have been the influence for video game music. There are songs that remind me of Earthbound on this. And here is the record.

I'm waiting for Mother 3 to come out. I mean Metroid got 2 games announce. Reggie said to come back early next year. But Earthbound is a great game.

Yeah they reissued it on vinyl a couple years ago. A little too expensive for me generally.

I will say that David Wise has done some awesome stuff. As for the Undertale comment, even though I have not played the game, I actually like a good amount of the songs off the OST. But I do respect the opinion.

I think the soundboard from older systems are more challenging but actually gives individuals an opportunity to bring some full potential to the soundboard. I mean look at Tim Follin.

The Silent Hill 2 soundtrack is a masterpiece, and David Wise's work in the old DK Country games is amazing given the limited amount of technology he worked with too. Yeah I'd agree that video game music is underrated in some ways, but still some stuff like the Undertale soundtrack gets too much acclaim. As a standalone album, it's very mediocre, but people connect the songs to "epic" battles and moments from the game in their head, and the music gets some weird kind of psychological bias. I don't think anyone who hasn't played the games would be able to enjoy their soundtracks anyway, so it's hard to call it underrated when it only appeals to a specific group who appreciates both games and music.

Haha, you've got that right. I have always enjoyed the Wario games, and any composing for a game boy soundchip has to be difficult.

Question 1 Favorite Game OST?
Oh god this is a hard question but if I had to pick mine would be
Wario Land 4
Yoshi's Island
Metroid Prime
There are so many others is just I am drawing a huge blank.
Question 2 Is video game music overlooked?
Short answer, Yes completely 100%. Long Answer, I feel if you mentioned to the general masses they would be able to hum a track from the original Super Mario Bros or the Legend of Zelda because those game where part of the culture during the 80's. However, there are a smaller selection of individuals that kept up with the hobby since they were born they would be able to give a good selection of game soundtracks. I mean I was born in 95 and been gaming since 2000 when I was 5. I would add two important details. For one I don't think many gamers would usually talk about the soundtracks. They would usually go on some graphics arms race which by the record is so boring. And for number 2, I feel that the music I like is influence to game music. For some examples, my favorite record from Bjork- Medulla is based in acapella and I would mention the special stages from Mario Sunshine or the entirely of Crash Twinsanity. I would also mention how the Bomberman Hero Ost is relate to jungle/drum and bass classics like Goldie's Timeless or Grooverider's Mysteries of Funk. As well as the adaptive songs in videogames that i could totally pinpoint in Boards of Canada's Geogaddi, The Orb's Moonbuilding 2703 A.D. and Disclosure's Caracal.
Question 3 Any further thoughts?
Realistic no. I think I was able to say my piece on the manner but would like to continue on.

ha well I dunno if a 5 hour speedrun will be the best introduction to the practice but it'll probably be fun to peek in on for a minute. I've always thought playing video games has a weird connection with reading music off a score (performers making duration based hand gestures according to composed visual information), and speedrumning is sort of like trying to find the purest distillation of that composition, even when subverting the boundaries and "breaking" the game, it's an interesting practice.

Yeah, probably not gonna make much sense to someone who's never played the game before :L The parallel you've pointed out is interesting, I've noticed quite a few musical runners while following the event. One guy said he used to play the cello until an injury caused him to quit. He took up speed running because it felt like a similar discipline.
