Well, at one time or another I owned actual physical copies of about I'd say 75% of what's on my lists. But each time I move I dump a lot of vinyl and CDs because you just get sick of lugging all that shit around with ya. That shit is heavy. It doesn't bother me anymore to just listen to streaming music. But at one time if I liked something I had to own it. But ever since about 5 years ago, a lot of the stuff that's in my charts I never even owned a physical copy at all. Doesn't seem quite right, but I'm getting used to it now.

Some calculations:

I have over 2,000 albums: roughly 35 albums from each year, from the late 50’s to the present.

That’s about 30 hours of music from each year, over 60 years.

That’s 1800 hours of music.

I need to listen to 6 hours of albums, 6 days a week, to get through every album once a year.

I’m 45.

That means, if I were able to keep that schedule, I might be able to listen to all of those albums 30 more times each before I’m dead.

Information overload.

I need to cut my collection down to the things I absolutely love.

I have 89% of my overall chart on CD and/or vinyl. The rest I either discovered or appreciated more in the last five years. I have around 2000 CDs and 600 LPs. Also probably almost 2000 bootleg shows, CD-Rs or just files.

He's a professor and deals with archiving of music, as well as overall sound production stuff. He owns two homes, one of which is just dedicated to music. It's crazy.

Doesn't help that American homes are mostly made of wood (especially upper levels).

Next time I see him I'll have to ask him to guess how much vinyl it is.

Also 50k! That's pretty insane too!
That's a good idea in my book. You don't really own what you stream, and once all the CD supply disappears, they may jack up the price of streaming cuz there's less competition :(

Good point about not actually owing what you stream. I’m hopeful that with the rise in popularity of vinyl there will always be a physical form that I can buy. There’s something special in the ritual of finding the album that you want to play in the racks and then putting it on the turntable. Old school I know but I love it.

It’s also about the effort needed to get the albums in the first place. It takes effort to visit the shop and trawl the racks. There’s also the interaction with staff, finding out what they are listening to. The whole experience can’t be bettered. For me, Long May it continue.

That's a good idea in my book. You don't really own what you stream, and once all the CD supply disappears, they may jack up the price of streaming cuz there's less competition 🙁

I'm very old school because I own all of them. Now running at nearly 7000 albums which are either vinyl or cd. A whole room at the house needed to store them.

It used to be about 200 physical stuff... then I sold it all but my vinyl, so now I'm down to like 60 to 80 or something.

Then I would copy other people's music collection into mine via iTunes by ripping their CDs.

I think I got up to nearly 1000 albums. (EDIT: I just logged into itunes for the first time in forever... 1060 albums)

Then I started streaming.

In the past 3 or 4 years I've made some kind of effort to start collecting again.

But really there's no beating the collection at my fingertips of a streaming service, so that will always be a thing as I discover music. I'd never buy an album I've never heard before. That's why used music shops were awesome because more than half of them you could sample what it was you were buying before you bought it.

I’m still using Apple Music for convenience.

I’ve been embracing playlists for the first time. It’s been helpful in rating albums. I’ve got yearly playlists that mirror my BEA yearly albums lists, and by removing tracks that I think of as filler, it becomes obvious which albums are stronger than others, or whether a greatest hits album is a better choice than the actual album, for a particular artist.

That said, I was having some trouble today with my streaming, and put the vinyl on instead, and the difference was not small. I put the CD on after that, which was different to the vinyl, but beat out the streaming noticeably as well. Damn convenience.

I own all 100 albums in one format or more. I own 97 of my top 100 in Vinyl. I also own approximately 80 of them including the 3 i don't own on vinyl on CD. The three I do not own on Vinyl are My #1. Sunshine Daydream by The Grateful Dead #11 Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs- Derek and the Dominos and #20 At the Fillmore by The Allman Brothers Band. The last 2 are easy to find on vinyl and i could grab them almost anytime. My #1 however is rare on vinyl but is available, problem is it runs several hundred dollars somewhere betweenn 300-550 on ebay.

I own maybe 10 CDs and no vinyl. The only thing I've ever used the CDs for is transferring the music into iTunes. There was a short time where I decided to buy new music physically but then I realized that based on the way I listen it was pointless.

However, I am pretty obsessed about keeping up my collection in iTunes so I can keep track of all the albums I like. I use Spotify for listening to music at work but I don't make playlists or anything, I just search fort things to listen to based on how I'm feeling. And even if something is on Spotify it still goes into iTunes eventually so I can transfer it to an iPod that I listen to while driving.

Sometimes I wish I had a physical collection but for me it's much easier to have everything ready to play on my computer. I love scrolling through, looking at album covers, and having something catch my eye that I'm really in the mood for. And since I've never listened to CDs or vinyl I don't notice a difference in quality, if there is one.
I enjoy streaming, but have a problem with it. Firstly, it has most of my music available, but certainly not all, and I need it to be all. And secondly (I'll come off as an audio snob here), I find there's a tendency for albums to appear in their remastered (often horribly compressed and bright) versions only. Sometimes there's several versions with different mastering, but often the original release versions disappear.

In that sense, keeping CD's, or at least maintaining a digital music library in lossless format of those original releases, is an act of preservation.

Absolutely. Well kinda... I did. And then stopped. New albums I buy on vinyl that I really like. But I still have it.
RE:digital music library
The cool thing about Google Music (I'm testing Apple Music soon) is that you can upload your FLAC files and it will convert it to 320mbps (yes I realize that's not the same but yes I also realize you likely can't hear the difference on 95% of your music).

I'm thinking of going back to Google Music for this reason (already started a trial period). They allow for 50k songs to be uploaded (with a limit of 300mb per song)

RE: Having it all
Google Music will allow you to have it all. I think Apple Music will too.

RE: terrible music quality
Oh geez absolutely. I absolutely hate the remaster of Nevermind. If there were a remaster I hated that'd be it. It's like somebody decided what all the terrible things you could do to the album and then released it.

There's Tidal, which claims lossless streaming, but is $19.99 a month instead of the $9.99 you find elsewhere for that service.

RE: Preservation
Good point. I mean I argue Spotify right now actually doesn't stream at the 320kbps it claims (I feel like their streaming algorithms likely change it according to network demand without telling you) to do... part of the reason I'm interested in leaving. I play the exact same song though the exact same setup out of my itunes and then again out of Spotify Premium (with supposed 320kbps stream quality) and there is a stark difference.
