There were a few interesting stories here, but yes Tha1ChiefRocka dad story with Bret Michaels takes the cake. Man, if that happened today, I'll bet the videos would go viral (but nobody had smartphones in the '80s). That story could make a great short film, and my story doesn't top that, but maybe someday I'll have something comparable:

Jokes aside, I live in LA and work on movie sets so I see celebrities sometimes. It's part of the job, but I mostly see famous actors/actresses. But speaking of short films, about a year ago I worked on a short film called Night Shift, and the lead actor was none other than Tunde the frontman of TV on the Radio. So I not only met him; I worked with him for a few days. Cool dude. Friendly. Def not the snobbish celebrity type. The film was screened at Sundance earlier this year.

Interesting - and ok thanks for the pic, I guess I could have googled it, but thought I'd come up with nerf guns and ping pong. I think I remember that now.

Also your dad has all these cool stories working security I assume? And that's what you do now too (along with teaching?) Cool stuff mate.

Almost forgot I worked at print shop and did two things:

1) Printed a bunch of promotional stuff for Alexi Murdoch. Got his EP for free before a bunch of his stuff was put in a bunch of TV shows/films. I like his chill voice/music.

2) I held Dionne Warick's passport at a print shop... I actually don't really even remember why we had it, but her assistant dropped it off to make copies or something. It was one of those extended passports with the 100 pages or whatever and was mostly filled up.

When you live in LA you have 30505840854 opportunities to have cool story, bro moments.

Many years ago...was running though the Los Angeles airport (LAX) at about 4AM with a flight to catch. Not paying attention, I ran headlong into a man in a black trenchcoat and a badass fedora. And sunglasses. The two guys he was with picked him up and whisked him away. My wife called me a clumsy oaf (she's not my wife anymore, btw). I told her to be quiet. I'd just met Ray Charles.

Went to a great party in Malibu with a girl from New Zealand who had the coolest accent and the most awesome hair I had ever seen in my life. Why I ever let her go is another story. As happens with most parties I end up at, it turned into a big jam. Someone called out "Rock Me On The Water", and I knew it, so I stepped up and grabbed the mic. Halfway through, I look to my right and the guy on the end playing maracas nodded and smiled. It was Jackson Browne. Playing freaking maracas while someone else sang his own song.

LA gives you lots of little rock star stories...

Also I met John Frusciante and Flea and shook their hands and talked to them for like 2 minutes. They asked if I were going to play at the next talent show at the Silver Lake Music Conservatory where I was going at the time and I told them I can't cause my dad was dying... so that ended that conversation quick. They played with a pianist who was also kinda famous or whatever, but forgot his name.

So I go and do that the first day of filming and they pull me aside and say hey you look like you could be Nate Mendel's double (same color hair, short and stalky). So I go the next day and wear his clothes (wasn't as chubby as he was so it was pretty loose when I was just 19) and play his fake bass (just a prop). We also had lunch with them.

I was a total fan boy at 19 - so of course I was frozen and awkward. This was like 2003.

I hung out with the drummer from Fugazi for a bit, he was the uncle of one of my friend's and he actually came and spoke at our english class. I think that's all. Also I know the drummer from Know Your Saints and the main mastermind behind Agarita's Jamboree.

Yes indeed that counts. Knowing somebody before they were famous is even better I think. Even the mother at the gas station story counts.

I haven't been doing it long enough to have too many good ones. The Slayer concert this summer was a clusterf*ck though. It was at an outdoor venue called Providence Ampitheater, formerly Sandstone. Every inch of the concrete bowl was filled, and to get more ticket revenue there was a "VIP Pit" made. Dumbest shit ever. They took extra barricades and basically made a corral that people could go into if they paid a bit more. Guess who got shafted with that spot? The opening acts were Behemoth and Lamb of God, there weren't too many jumpers except for this one asshole who tried to body up to me after I caught him, but things are a lot different in 2017 than they were in the 80's we can barely even put our hands on people. It can really be hindrance, and a danger to ourselves sometimes. When the sun went down, and Slayer came on, that's when the shit hit the fan. People were jumping over that makeshift barricade, so fast I couldn't keep up. My boss came over, and told me not even mess with it anymore, because he didn't want me to get hurt. There was this pretty big dude that was severely intoxicated who essentially fell over the barricade, and almost broke his neck, because I couldn't get him (we are supposed to be there for the safety of the fans). It was just a disaster, I survived though. I know I've put some of my experiences on the concert thread.

Yeah my Dad got to meet all kinds of cool people. The Stevie Wonder thing is pretty funny. My Dad was just standing off to the side of the stage when Stevie Wonder grabbed onto his arm from behind, and asked if he could help him out there. He realized how big my Dad was and asked him to carry him out there, so my dad put him up on his shoulders and carried Stevie Wonder out on the stage.

As for other asshole musicians, apparently Steve Perry had lost some of his voice one night, cancelled the entire show and never made a return trip.

KEMPER ARENA, KANSAS CITY, MO 1986-7?

RATT, POISON, DAVID LEE ROTH

Don't know if I got the other two artists right or not, but Poison were obviously there. Anyways, my dad was one

of the biggest guys that worked there, about 6 feet tall, 290 lbs, i.e. not someone to eff with. Well, that night for

some reason, he was the only one working behind the stage where VIPS could get in. This was the 80s, so there

was much less worry about people just wandering around, and because Poison were hitting their peak popularity at

that point, people were going crazy. He had to block a small hallway by himself to keep out dozens of people.

Before the show, nobody gets past him. No problems. However, Brett Michaels, drenched head-to-toe in hairspray,

plastered with make up, and dressed in a shimmering silver leotard, goes up to my Dad and says something like,

"make sure none of these people gets back here, OK Fatass?" Needless to say, that is not something you should

call someone three times the size of you who is your only protection. During the Ratt set though (or

whoever the hell it was) a fight broke out in the crowd that my Dad had to respond to. He said that there was

some jackass that had yelled some racial slurs at some young black men in the crowd, and then they began a

pretty large fight in the pit area. The way he tells it, he goes out there separates them and tells them they are

all kicked out, when all of sudden they go at each other again with my Dad in the middle. He blacks out for a few

minutes, wakes up with one of his security friends above him asking if he's OK. "I'm OK what happened?" he

asked as he looked around him, seeing the bloodied faces of the assailants. "Never mind," he said, as he stood

up and brushed himself off, preparing to go back stage again. Still a raucous crowd of people back there, but

once they saw my Dad come around the corner they quieted down. I imagine that some of them could have seen

the fray that had happened earlier, and decided it best not to provoke him. Poison is going to go on soon, and

Brett Michaels is standing in the hallway with the small crowd looking on. Disoriented, my Dad resumes his post,

but right as he returns, two teenage boys rushed through the crowd and past my Dad towards Brett Michaels.

Michaels starts to freak out yelling for my Dad to get his "Fatass" over there. He rushes down the hall grabs the

two boys by the shirt collar, and takes them down to the exit at the end of the hall and throws them out. Cheers

come from the crowd, but not from Michaels. He is irate, and starts berating my father with all sorts of insults

about his weight, his looks, his mother, and just about every other thing you could think of. Tired of listening to

this sissy's remarks, he grabs him by the shoulders, spins him around, and picks him up by his spandex waist

band. One hand on the back of neck, like a puppy's mother, and one hand grabbing the tearing waist band, my

father proceeds to take him down the hall, kicking and screaming all the way, towards the same door he just

threw the teenagers out. One kick to the door, one drop kick to Michaels shiny-silver ass, and he was out on the

street. Before he could get back in my Dad shut the door, and made sure it was locked. He went down to where

his supervisor was, and told him that he quit.
