Probably Nebraska or Graceland. A real lack of love for Bruce here

Are you saying that even though classic/60s/70s rock is better, if people aren't into 80s music "so much," it's pointless for them to be active here?

If you're only into rock and can't stand metal or rap, yeah I can see why you'd be disappointed in 80's music but music in general branched out so much in that decade. We haven't seen that much new and drastic variety in all the time that's passed since combined.
No-wave (Swans), industrial (NIN's Pretty Hate Machine), grunge (Nirvana's Bleach), alt rock (Pixies, REM), goth (Bauhaus), all 80's babies.

No Wave, industrial, goth and rap all started in the 70s. Arguably metal started in the late 60s and branched out in the 70s. There are subgenres of preexisting genres that emerged in the 80s and 90s, but the fundamental styles were established already. Perhaps more diversification happened in the 80s than subsequent decades, but since the essential genres were already in place and the diversification continued into the 90s and beyond, it seems a relatively minor point.

I read the first few pages and saw no mention of Joy Division's Closer, wow.... No Purple Rain mentions either.

Yeah Doolittle gets more play from me than any other album from the decade though.

Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska. Michael Jackson's Thriller. The Cure's Disintegration. The Stone Roses. Those are probably the runner ups. (b/c I don't own Joshua Tree on vinyl but I play War).

A whoooooole bunch of death/black/thrash metal.

NWOBM such as Priest and Maiden.

The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick. It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back. Straight Outta Compton. Paid In Full. Criminal Minded. Lots of rap too actually.

I would argue that AC/DC is very distinct from hair metal in general. There are a couple broad comparisons to be drawn, but AC/DC carry none of the aesthetic and very little sonic similarity to bands like Motley Crue, Ratt, White Lion, or Tesla (for example).

Furthermore they have more of a blues rock foundation. Hair metal typically doesn't.

Those that have no respect for Joshua Tree have no soul.

Also the dodgers last won a world series in 1988.

I'd say AC/DC laid a lot of groundwork for bands like White Lion, Ratt, Cinderella, etc to come along, even if they don't have a ton in common musically. When people think of a 4/4 back beat, it's often referred to as the AC/DC beat, which many of the drummers of that era used commonly. On top of that, I can hear a good amount of both Bon and Brian influence on the singers to come after them. Axl Rose being a huge Bon fan, Cinderella and Slaughter's singers respectively having the gruff Brian Johnson tone. No one really capitalized on catchy simplicity like AC/DC did in my opinion though.

After the release of Back In Black and For Those About To Rock, AC/DC's style didn't change per se, however, it did take on a bigger sound in their production though closer to the pop metal of the time. I believe Mutt Lange produced both Back In Back and Def Leppard's Hysteria. AC/DC are not hair metal at all, but their fingerprints are all over the genre.

If anything, I think it's fair to say that the hair metal scene was in large part a bridge between the styles of Van Halen and AC/DC.

Yea, I mean there's a LOT of metal from the 80s of all different types of subgenres, and plenty of it has had massive lasting power and influence through today

Exactly.

I would say Guns N Roses and AC/DC is a very apt comparison. They are probably the two bands from that 80s metal sound with any real and lasting talent IMHO. Well and VH if you include them in the same category. I don't really think GNR or AC/DC is HAir Metal and VH kind of either invented or perfected it so they get a pass. The three are all certainly light years ahead of the Poisons, Cinderellas, and Motley Crues of the world.

So lots of things

First, GNR was not exactly better lyrically than their hair metal contemporaries. I've already mentioned that Sweet Child O Mine is lyrically pretty much garbage, and I don't really see how Paradise City is all that much more poetic than Girls Girls Girls. Not to mention some of the stuff off of Use Your Illusion (i.e. Get In The Ring).

It's hit or miss but I think there are some absolutely amazing lyrics sprinkled throughout the Use Your Illusion Records. Get In The Ring is I guess purposely one dimensional lyrically, but then you have lines from the end of Coma like..

And I wish that I could help you
With what you hope to find
But I'm still out here waiting
Watching reruns of my life
When you reach the point of breaking
Know it's gonna take some time
To heal those broken memories
That another man would need
Just to survive

Perhaps not life-changing Dylan-esq wordplay, but some very chaotic themes that match the build up of the music around it.
