I think I may have meant something different than what gowi said. I meant that BEA ranks albums based upon scores on lists while RYM's overall ranking system is directly correlated to average rating as well as number of ratings so ratings have a direct impact on the overall ranking of albums while albums here are ranked primarily by points on lists. The importance is no longer on ratings therefore ratings will less likely be done.

BEA is better for ranking your music and finding a more close-knit community and RYM is generally better for more diverse music recommendations

There are tons of immature users on RYM which makes the community pretty vile, and BEA doesn't really have that issue.

Alright. These are my thoughts on that matter:

A larger, more active community. This means the site is less intimate but otherwise brings more consistent discussions and points of view. On the downside, this makes it a breeding ground for jokesters, snobs, and trolls.
More intuitive chart system that you can organize by year, genre, and other metrics. This allows for you to filter through sitewide favorites (or esoteric gems) – whilst BEA will have a tag feature in the future, RYM’s larger rating community allows for a greater depth. Most of my records are found through keeping up with these charts.
A diverse community that isn’t limited to a small handful of niches. This makes the charts more broad; incorporating favorites as heavily as from rockist classics and alternative favorites as well as hip hop, jazz, soul, folk, experimental, country, electronica, and more. RYM has a more widespread “core” and it excels due to this fact.
A More intuitive user interface that makes it easy to track your collection.
By using both BEA, RYM, and other metric sites you narrow down the limitations you have by being exclusive to one or the other. You get BEA’s decidedly different charts and community, RYM’s vast network of discographies and recommendations that can be essentially tailored to your interests, and two different communities that operate on different thought processes. Generally, while it can be exhausting multimanaging as a music fan the pros outweigh the cons in that you have more music options and knowledge that is accessible to you.

Can you explain better how using the two has its benefits? I just use BEA, I always thought I was too similar to RYM to register on both 🤔

I've been using RYM as a resource for around ten years, it is probably the best music site online. Last.fm used to be a good secondary but it went down the toilet some years ago (around nine or eight, actually). Way better than discogs and the like. Still, it has its flaws just like any site and using both BEA and RYM has its benefits.

you definitely should. amazing resource for when you want to delve into a new artist and are not sure where to begin, or if you want to listen to a specific genre from a specific year of decade and dont know what to listen to. it might be where i do most of my discovering these days -- maybe not a majority, but a plurality almost certainly.

Yeah I think its simply 2 factors which makes for this massive disparity between RYM and BEA:

1. Much smaller amount of users.

2. The rankings and design of BEA is based off Best albums, via charts and lists, whereas the rankings and general design of RYM is based off what albums you've listened to and their Rating or Grade. So when you look at the RYM charts or genre or year etc, its based off Rating mostly and how many ratings (not sure if it takes into account your charts on RYM) whereas if you look at similar year or decade lists here its based completely on chart and rankings on lists.

So Adema for example isnt ranked high because less people have decided that Adema's albums are the best of their decades or years or all time list.

Exactly what I think. I haven't listened to as many albums as some people here on BEA, but I tend to really give every album a full opportunity, at least 3-4 full album listens before any kind of rating.

Ratings on BEA do not matter. What matters on BEA is chart placement. And unfortunately many of the bands and albums you were trying to force on us are unlikely to appear on many charts. Therefore asking us to listen to entire discographies of bands for the sole purpose of giving them ratings was, no offense, kinda silly.

However I like the idea of switching it to a Music Diary or a general Post-Grunge/Nu Metal thread, where we focus on one album at time. I'm a fan of those genres. So if you want to host something where, let's say we listen to one album every week or so, and then have a little discussion about it, I'm game for that.

I don't. The ratings are kind of meaningless, since the rankings are based on how many charts they appear in and where they appear in those charts.

I understand what you mean it, but I have 2369 ratings on BEA and I can leave you here the link of my LasfFm account and you can lose several hours looking for an album that I have heard less than 3 times from beginning to end.

But I think you don't understand my comment, what I wanted to say is that you have heard 1,000, 100 or just 10 albums, it does not take much work to give a rating here at BEA. This just makes the site more complete and more likely to grow.
