It incorporates samples and electronic music influences into a very funky jazz album. Medeski's on keyboards.

I second Medeski, Martin and Wood (they're also the band on the John Scofield album, A Go Go, listed above).

Jeff Parker's been the guitarist for Tortoise since TNT. He's a jazz-based guitarist. His recent album The New Breed mixes jazz with (instrumental) hip-hop and electronic music and is quite good.

I'd also recommend Medeski, Martin & Wood. They're a creative jazz-funk keyboard trio who've become somewhat associated with the jam band scene, but they have legit jazz credentials. Medeski, the keyboardist, plays organ, vintage electric keyboards and piano and the bass player alternates acoustic to electric bass. The drummer's been influenced by hip-hop and they sometimes use a DJ. This one's a good place to start:

If you want to get into jazz, there's no reason you shouldn't go straight to the source and listen to some great jazz albums.

Assuming no one has explained this to you, t'll help if you understand the form. A lot of jazz follows the convention whereby the band plays the "head" which marks out the melody of the song and the chord structure etc. followed by everyone taking turns improvising solos over that form, and returning to the "head" to finish. Understanding that will make it seem less random.

I've been wanting to get into Jazz for awhile now and I thought that going from the angle of genres I already know would be interesting. On the hip-hop side, I'm a fan of "You're Dead" and"TPAB" and on the rock side I'm a fan of "The Ooz" and "TNT" and want to know if there was more stuff out there like that.
