I agree with Jimmy's description. Anh artist that sold poorly , and initially received little recognition, only for people 30 years after the fact say, "hey, this album is great". I found another one.

So, this is her only studio recording, and it went out of print until a couple years ago. Original copies on discogs sell for near a hundred, which is another characteristic of these albums. Apparently this album has Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons singing backup vocals on a track, making their first appearance on a record?

Another example would be a whole slew of obscure albums that have only ever had a release on cassette. A lot of weirdness in the 80's only ever got a cassette release.

This one needs a vinyl reissue, because I'm not paying $150 for a cassette! (Great album though, check it out).
What is the difference between Nick Drake and most of the artists listed here? I get it if an album was a vanity project, the artist paid for the pressings themselves, and then years later someone with resources discovers the album in a flea sale. But if a well-known record label put out the album, what then?

Considering one of Joe Boyd’s (Nick’s producer) demands to Island were that his albums never went out of print I can’t see how Nick Drake could ever be classed as a ‘lost artist’, but rather one who had no love when he was first around due to poor promotion, etc, and slowly over the years has been rediscovered by new fans. Now in the case of Sibylle Baier, the recordings she made in the 70s weren’t released until the 21st century - far more deserving of the ‘lost artist’ moniker, at least in my eyes.

To me, a ‘lost artist’ or ‘album’ is just that - something or someone whose music was never commercially released around the time the music was recorded, or a private press released in ridiculously low quantities only to be unearthed during a crate dig or similar. The latter could be considered especially true where the artist had little impact in the West, such as:

But then you could argue the case that he may never have been a ‘lost artist’ in Ghana. It’s all a bit woolly, in’t it?

rkm wrote:

However regarding Rodriguez, he only sold a few thousand units in the U.S, and was completely oblivious of his success in South Africa. The South Africans thought he was dead. I guess it wasn't so much his recordings that were completely lost to the world, so much as he was lost to his own success, and any sign of the royalties he deserved.

If you look at discogs, Coming From Reality released in 1971, didn't get a reprint in the U.S until 2009. That's reasonably lost.

Rodriquez' story is a little more nuanced than what "Searching for Sugarman" suggests. The doc makes it seem like he had no involvement with the music business between 1976 and 1997, but he actually went on two concert tours of Australia, where he was also popular, in 1979 and 1981. Even if he didn't get the royalties, his albums were released on CD in South Africa in 1990, a time when some big-name albums were still getting their first CD release.

Jimmy Dread wrote:

Yeah, we could all go on listing artists who made little impact when their albums were first released, but I don’t think most of these albums rkm lists were ever ‘lost*’. Rodriguez, for example, outsold Elvis in South Africa. If you apply the same logic then Nick Drake should be listed here, which of course would be somewhat missing the point of the OP.

This album is amazing yet seems to be lost in the shuffle for some reason. This despite two well known artists and an interesting controversy surrounding the recordings. Was it live at a concert or was it recorded "live" in the studio? Still amazing music regardless of its origins and an album that deserves much more love and appreciation:

another album that almost falls into this. Not sure if this qualifies but, i used to see it on many lists made in the late 70's-mid 80's and i never see it on lists anymore. A personal top 250 album of mine:
For those of you familiar with the US Girls song "Window Shades" this is where all those great samples come from.
Lewis is a sort of low-fi, minimalist, ethereal Julio Iglesias, with a layer of gloomy, discreet 80's synth on top.
It's been (re)discovered by someone who found his long forgotten record in a flea market, and eventually it's been re-released in 2014, along with his second lp: Romantic Times.
Nice and strange records
I guess what'd be more interesting would be finding great music that was never shared with an audience during the lifetime of a reclusive musician... the musical equivalent of Vivian Maier's street photography, bought as a locker full of unknown negatives at an auction by a stranger.

I think you're probably right.

Numero Group is a great label uncovering plenty nowadays, check them out.

I'm not sure if Karen Dalton had much success in her lifetime, but her 1969 and 1971 albums were reissued in 2006. A folk singer with a ragged voice along the lines of Billie Holiday, and a tragic life story.
Does Rodriguez count...?

I mean, people thought he was dead. Certainly his albums were more popular down the track, than they were on release.
