Shirley Collins. 38 years. Her comeback album in her 80s

I've got the previous on now, will add to database.
Seems to be a few folk style artists. I know that Shelagh McDonald did some sort of comeback recordings but I searched for them a couple of years back and there only seems to be no official release.

Good point! The pioneering experimental ensemble Musica Elettronica Viva released 2 albums in 1969, didn't release another album till 1990 (jazz saxophonist Steve Lacy's on it) and then didn't put out another album that wasn't archival material till 2005.

A few jazz artists:

Frank Morgan - Frank Morgan (1955) / Easy Living 1985

Alto player who was in and out prison for 30 years due to drug addiction -- during one stretch he played in a prison band with Art Pepper!

Grachan Moncur III - Shadows (1978) / Explorations (2004)

The other of the two original avant-garde jazz trombonists, Roswell Rudd, also has a big gap in his recording career. Lesson: Playing free jazz trombone does not pay.

As a solo artist 38 years, granted he put out many albums as member of various group in those years but as a solo artist it was 1978 to 2016:

There might be a fourth category: Artists who have always recorded infrequently because that's just how they choose to operate. An example would be a The Blue Nile. As I understand it, they had no interest in performing or touring, and I presume had other means of supporting their lives, and therefore had the luxury of recording when they felt like it, or were happy enough with the results.

I suppose there's Tool not releasing an album for 12 years... but not nearly as interesting as some of the examples given... and they still haven't released it... haha. Perhaps it will be another 20 years.

Not sure if counts but Dennis Wilson put Pacific Ocean blue out in 1977 and they finally released a posthumous album last year in 2017

The first person who came to my mind when seeing this chat was Shania Twain. It took her 15 years to get a new album out there.

Its been almost nine years now since Tanya Tucker's last release.
