Has a compilation ever been more important to a genre/subgenre than this and No Wave?

I'd say that IDM and the Artificial Intelligence Series by Warp Records would come close. I can't believe how lowly rated this album is.

That is absolutely right. No Wave and No New York defined that whole thing. Just hearing those names again conjures up the whole thing in my mind. Heh heh. And you're right on about artificial intelligence too. There's one other I could think of. The series Logical Progressions is practically synonymous with drum and bass for a lot of people. And one other album that was important to a genre was The Harder They Come.

I love me a bit of disco Bobby bud. These comps have very good track lists.

In the UK in the 90s we had a couple of compilations called Rhythm Divine 1 and 2 which were great disco compilations. They were double CDs. I think they sell them cheap on Amazon UK. Well worth checkin out although there is some crossover from The Disco Years.
^some even created scenes^.

I also used to love those Creation Records compilations, this one was especially good and as it was priced so well it seemed everyone had a copy.

This one from Cherry Red was also seen as important.

Then of course I must come to those brilliant Sarah Records compilations as I’m such a fan of the label. Whilst Sarah released a few studio albums from the bands themselves the whole ethos of the label was geared towards the 7” single so these comps are the perfect way of getting to the heart of the label. The first 3 are especially good...

Temple Cloud by Various Artists

Glass Arcade by Various Artists

The most recent compilation I bought was this 3 LP compilation from last year...

The Test Of Time - A Turntable Friend Records Compilation by Various Artists

Then of course you used to get all those free cassettes & CD’s with magazines, I remember a particularly good Creation one from Select magazine and Uncut have done some really great ones, the 4AD one was a great look at the label.

Various artist compilations used to be hugely important for labels especially to get their lesser known artists some exposure but I guess once ‘streaming music’ arrived there was really not the need so much for them. I do really enjoy a well compiled various artist compilation though and over the years have discovered so much great music through the format.

I remember discovering 311 through one of these when I bought a pair of chucks.

It was like Chuck's All Stars comp. It mostly sucked to be honest.

Sometimes the Grammy comps are ok. I think they still do those?
PS I found this very NOW 1 on vinyl last year for £3.00. In good nick. You can pay at least 10 times that for it on Amazon, for a decent copy. Was well chuffed!

I think the NOW albums are up to Volume 30 or something now. They were really popular for some reason. When I was a kid they had something called K-tel albums. And they used to advertise them on Saturday morning TV. Like while you were watching cartoons. I had a shitload of them. At the time I thought they were totally awesome.

Yes! It was the right one!

PS I found this very NOW 1 on vinyl last year for £3.00. In good nick. You can pay at least 10 times that for it on Amazon, for a decent copy. Was well chuffed!
Now that is what I remember as a good compilation when I was a kid. It has no cool points but its great fun

PS I hope this is the British album and not the American one as they are very different albums, different decades too I think. I am sure the U.S, version is great too but I am on about the UK version from 1983, I think.

You know what kind of compilation I always thought were the best? Label samplers. Nowadays they're usually just promotional only, but at one time record labels used to put out regular releases of samplers. Big labels, small labels, Punk labels, alternative labels, reggae labels, disco labels, foreign labels. I had all kinds of shit. Most of them you have to get at the used CD store because they were just promos. And they were usually stamped "Not For Resale" or "promotional only" . Heh heh. But it's amazing how many of them were pretty good. It's a good way to find out about types of music that you don't know shit about.

Clicks + Cuts is awesome. I just recently found out that they're all the way up to Clicks + Cuts 5. I thought there was only two of them. Imagine my surprise when I found out there's 5. Can't wait to listen to em.
