I have the opposite problem. I can't even fill a 100 album chart for the 2010s. The 1950s were easier for me. It is harder to start and compare when you've given albums a lot more thought than songs. I have a pretty good idea what most of my favorite overall songs are; ranking them and culling them down to 50 or 100 would be the hardest part for me.

Forgot there's a Top-Rated Songs sort on this site. Pretty boring list -- practically all from the the top 100 albums on the overall chart.

Why can't I do a top songs of the 2010s list? Too much to choose from. Too hard to compare. I wouldn't know where to start. I guess I'd start with my top 100 albums but then I'd wind up with 400 songs and I'd have tons of good songs that came off albums I don't like or haven't heard, of which I would have a difficult time trying to remember because I'm so much of an album guy. I might give it a try but would still feel it's rather pointless because more than half of my selections probably wouldn't make anyone else's list.

I'm pretty sure we've done something here with directors too if I'm not mistaken. I remember a ranked list of Coen Brothers films being compiled and I thought it was here. Been a while.

badseed wrote:

The reason I think songs would be WAY more different than movies is because it's SONGS. Not albums. Songs are to albums what scenes are to movies. Same goes for movies/scenes. Something like Revolver, or conversely The Godfather, might be under-represented just because there are so many perfect songs (or scenes) that there's just way more to choose from overall and if people tried to stick to one song per album or artist then it's just gonna be a wreck.I just feel like there are only gonna be a couple songs that get on more than one list because the scope is so huge...

I get that the movies and songs are not exactly comparable. But the average movie has more like 50 scenes, so they're not exactly comparable either. The problem is what led me to the idea of only including songs that were singles.

Quote:

For every good album you've got an average of ten good songs.

Even among the most highly ranked albums, there are only a handful where every song is considered good. Even on Sgt. Pepper there are a few songs people are unlikely to vote for. The most popular songs from the most popular albums on BEA would do very well.

hereforashortime wrote:

I think someone recently tried to start a best songs of the 2010s poll going and then nothing ever happened.

Did the person who said he'd take it on never follow through, or was it another problem?
Why couldn't you come up with a top songs of the 2010s list?

Quote:

As far as doing genres and what not, music genres are so subjective. Just doesn't appeal to me personally (though for some reason, stuff that isn't lyrics based like classical, jazz and electronic sound more fun to do than rock or rap or whatever

I think movie genres are just as subjective. What's a comedy is subjective. For that list, were there restrictions, or was it, if you vote for it, then it qualifies? What's a thriller is subjective. You run into that issue even with the more-easily-defined genres.

Quote:

but we all seem to have a different idea as to what is and isn't a good idea so if you wanna try it, have at it.
Perhaps we should all branch out and do our own unique series. As long as we spread it out we'll never run out of lists to make.

Yeah, it comes down to is whether someone's willing to host a list. And it's not like this forum has too many active threads. Since I've never hosted a list, don't think I'm going to start with all-time songs, but would consider doing a genre list down the road. I was thinking of maybe doing a jazz album list at some point.

Quote:

I still really like the best songs per artist idea personally.

It's a good idea in of itself. I know a movie forum that's done individual directors.
I still really like the best songs per artist idea personally. Of course not everyone is gonna want to participate in every one. I'd only be interested in doing artists from whom I've listened to almost everything so most rap and jazz artists would be a no-go for me. I was thinking if I start these up I might even PM some users who aren't forum regulars who appear to be big fans of whichever artist we're doing, mainly because the forums are a quirky bunch with too big a diversity in taste. Half y'all don't even like the Beatles, and probably only a couple people have listened to most of Nick Cave's stuff (and y'all know damn well we're doing the Bad Seeds early on if I follow through with this), so it would help to get more lists in if I'm able to bring in some outside sources.

Perhaps we should all branch out and do our own unique series. As long as we spread it out we'll never run out of lists to make.

Both are excellent and it's exciting that you'd pick either as your favorite. To be honest all seven will likely make my final cut

It's Man of the West.

Quote:

While I initially shunned the idea of a Best Songs list I just thought of the fact that it would be a brilliant idea if done by artist. I don't think that's been done before. I think there's the "Let's Rank" series for albums but not songs. We could do the similar thing where the next artist we do is chosen in a poll. Of course there aren't many artists here that everyone listens to but we could try our best with some of the more obvious names at first and gradually move onto more unique acts. I don't know if we should go with a set amount for the series (top 40 songs?) or let the list size be dependent on how many songs they have (I could easily see us doing top 100 Beatles/Dylan/Marley/Waits/Cave/Stones and it being a blast but obviously if we did that with Radiohead or Led Zeppelin it's practically their entire catalogue).

Given how many film lists have been done on a music site, I'm really surprised a song one hasn't been done yet. Given an all-time film list's been done, it'd be too bad, on a music site (albeit an album one), if something fairly big in scope couldn't be done. An all-time song list without any restrictions obviously would be a huge amount of work, though I'm not convinced it would be completely scattered -- the all-time film list must've had some of those issues. What about song lists by genre? A rock one, of course, would be the most work, but would eliminate songs from less well-known genres. Or we could do a classic rock one (we'd have to settle on a cutoff year) and then another one for rock since that cutoff year. Rap, R&B and jazz lists would be manageable (I'd consider hosting a jazz one myself). Another idea is an all-time song list restricted to only songs released as singles.

I'm less interested in artist lists. I'd participate in a Beatles or Stones one, but not in most of the others. Neil Young and Zappa have large catalogs too.
There's two more I've seen. Man of the West and The Tin Star. Both are excellent and it's exciting that you'd pick either as your favorite. To be honest all seven will likely make my final cut, so Mann will be pretty competitive with Ford regarding who has the most movies... I'm probably gonna have like 20 spaghetti westerns on my list as well, including at least three in my top ten. Not sure what's gonna be #1 but it probably comes down to Ford vs. Leone vs. Peckinpah.

Not... really... 🤔 BUT, it's brilliant, and it'll definitely be on my 2017 list. Same with Lucky. Good picks ChiefRocka.
Badseed, if you're going to watch Brigsby, don't know anything going into it. Just hit play.

For some reason I thought Lucky was something else. I suppose it isn't a western either but it appears to star the late great Harry Dean Stanton in a cowboy hat.

If anyone changed their list they didn't mention it to me, master. Before I told everyone to let me know about any further updates towards the end I re-checked every post's last edited date. I even used an erasable pen through the first twelve lists in case of any changes. I had to subtract five points from everything on a particular list when I started at 50 and worked my way to the bottom to find out it was only a 45. Look at the sample page I uploaded, pick an actor and go back and check his positions; every point should be properly accounted for.

StreetSpirit wrote:

^^^ You have neat handwriting. But wow you did it by hand. Impressive. I used a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet when I hosted the Sci-Fi/Fantasy lists. I retyped everybody's lists on the spreadsheet in reverse order. That way, whatever cell # a movie appeared in would be the # of points it received. That may have been more work than necessary, but it made it very easy in the end. The math basically did itself, and the lists wrote themselves.

Anyway, as for the next polls, I think Westerns belongs to badseed unless he passes it to someone else. But first, the 2017 poll hosted by Hayden in the near future. If we're gonna do something else before the 2017 poll, I prefer it be something quick and easy.

I had to attempt to write somewhat neat since I was trying to fit two names per space. My handwriting can be hit or miss as a whole. If I'm writing something I feel I'm gonna save for reading in the future it's neater than a 12 year old girl. If I'm writing a shopping list or leaving a note on the fridge it's usually chicken scratch.

The excel spreadsheet idea was ideal but I didn't mind writing it. I buy and throw away ten notebooks a year. I like to write. Plus I actually have a good eye for my writing so I can scan down a piece of paper to find what I'm looking for faster than I can use a scroll bar.

As for the western poll I suppose if I'm penciled in to do it, that works for me. I'm not rushing it. If nobody has any good ideas after 2017 I'll do it then but if another idea musters up a lot of excitement I can wait as well.

Tha1ChiefRocka wrote:

For sure, let's do a list for 2017 films next, I just wanted to get some thoughts organized for a future Western list.

Nice. I'll look into them. Haven't even heard of Brigsby Bear. I gather it's a western too?

<late edit> Just for fun I've used multiple sources to find what I believe to be every western I've seen. I've got 137. For some reason I was expecting more. So yeah, I guess I don't blame most of you guys for not being able to list many, but like I said, yay for recs. I dunno. Still might go 50/50 western/war but I'm just not the biggest war movie fan generally and I'd fear we only see Sergio Leone representing the spaghetti westerns of Italy if we did that, or no Anthony Mann films... To bring it full circle back to the actors list, James Stewart was in FIVE tense, gripping westerns directed by Anthony Mann. Each one of them is a great film, so much that I really couldn't pick a favorite or a least favorite without thinking it over and likely rewatching them. I'd wager not everyone who helped put Stewart at #1 on this list has seen all of them so there's my on-topic recommendation of the day.

Depends on who's hosting and when they wanna do it. I assumed 2017 was next but if someone wants to squeeze out another list before then, have at it. I'm down to participate but I'm not trying to run another one right now. It's actually a tad exhausting. But in a month or two once I get my stamina back I'd be happy to host that one. Also really tempted to jump start a new horror list next October and just ignore all lists containing more than one Saw or Final Destination

I'd be up for starting the 2017 list, but it wouldn't have a deadline for like... 2 months. They def are a bit exhausting to run 😨 I think a list before then would fit snug.

And let's remember to keep it democratic 🤣 .... but I know where you're coming from 8-[

Lol you don't know how bad I wanted to make another bea account just to get Christopher Lee on the actors list. I wouldn't actually ignore anyone's list but hopefully if the people who voted for all that are still here they've had time to discover some better stuff. Then again stuff like that is basically mainstream gateway horror for the non horror fan, stuff they think is edgy or gory because they haven't actually seen a really grotesque film. Kind of like the western situation. A lot of users hadn't seen twenty real solid films so instead of just making a top 20 they filled out their list with all the crap they've been talked into seeing by teenage girls (which is why if you can't come up with a big list, don't put a bunch of 2/10 films in spots 15-100 just to fill it out as that gives better films that more people need to see less chance of making it because Saw 3 or Young Guns 2 has been seen by way more people than Zombie or El Topo). Dammit, here I go ranting on our shitty horror picks again. I digress.

But yeah it's a tight fit on doing another list before the 2017 list. We usually take minor breaks to stop worrying about making lists and use that time to discuss the most recent one. With that said we're not some kind of official publication. We're a games forum. Everyone here has the ability to do it at any given time. Just space them out a bit, no need to hurry. All I ask is that respect is given to the lists and hosts of the past as I think we've got a good method down. And if you're gonna host, commit to it (and make sure Hayden doesn't have a hankering to do that particular topic, because let's face it, he's the man, and when it comes to a single top 100 list nobody can pull off a more appealing post). Preferably a veteran host if we're still doing movie themes (y'all wanna do video games or books or whatever, it's not really part of this series so do what you want). High IQ or being generally good with numbers or statistics really helps as well as having a solid, fool-proof technique* when it comes to compiling. It's a lot of work. Mistakes can easily be made if you're not experienced or dedicated.

*Here's a sample of the technique I used for the actors list. Basically for each vowel I started a new page. A-D, E-H, I-N, etc. Probably could have split it a little better (U-Z had considerably less names than the other four pages) but it was my first time doing something on this scale. It worked out well though. I could have used a table but my laptop is cheap so I don't have any of those cool document programs. Being good with numbers, I didn't add very many people's points. I eyeballed all the totals. If they looked like they were over 80 I used a calculator to add their total and if it was 90 or more I wrote the name and score down (again I'm really good with numbers, so the calculator was just a useless crutch that slowed me down but I wouldn't even recommend the eyeballing part to most people). Then out of all the names over 90 points it was easy to sort them into proper order.

Interesting fact you can see from that picture, if the handwriting is legible. Brando appeared on the first 12 lists then missed the last three (not the exact order of submission as the intergender lists got added last). For a while I thought he was gonna make a clean sweep.
Like I said, I think it's a public persona kind of thing. I don't give a crap about political stuff but she did something that offended half the country a few decades ago. I think she said she wanted to smash George Segal during the filming of Fun with Dick and Jane. The outrage was hilarious but it definitely put a damper on her popularity and career.

But yeah it's odd, all her contemporaries (Keaton, Spacek, Burstyn) did great while she didn't do so hot.

Tha1ChiefRocka wrote:

Here's a list I made real quick for reference when we get there.

http://www.imdb.com/list/ls021945899/

Great list. Quite a few I left off in my five minute rant. Blazing Saddles definitely counts, and Hell or High Water falls into the post western genre. El Topo, also fantastic. . We both omitted a few Sam Peckinpah films; Ride the High Country is spectacular and The Ballad of Cable Hogue is awesome. We also forgot The Magnificent Seven (and its sequels and remake - haven't seen the remake yet). What's everyone's thoughts on Treasure of the Sierra Madre? It's kinda western, kinda post western, kinda not western at all.

hereforashortime wrote:

So will Westerns be our next list? Or will we do a different list before then?

I'm just gonna keep arguing this point until people stop saying 50. There's hundreds of them. The point of doing 100 isn't to make people feel bad or stupid for not seeing many films; it's to enlighten and turn them on to stuff they haven't seen. 100>50

I feel like I'm arguing with a bunch of toddlers, trying to put together a top 100 best foods list and because all they like is grilled cheese, chicken nuggets, pancakes and lolly pops I have to leave off 50 foods that I really wish these picky children would have the courage to try.

Oh, there's def 100's, for sure, but I can't help but feel that we'd struggle with it. We'll see, maybe it works. I'm down for picking up some western recs along the way. See what the general consensus is though, gotta go with the crowd.
