You're right, there is no way for you to objectively quantify that Carly Rae Jepsen is a good artist. You don't need to and there's no reason to try.

Some people think she's great, some think she's garbage, some think she's mediocre. All of them are right and all of them are wrong.

I mean, if we're going to use sales to determine what artists are truly great, then I guess we should be talking about how the Backstreet Boys, Shania Twain, and Celine Dion are some of the greatest artists in the history of music.

Nick Drake can suck a nut though, he never sold anything so obviously he's complete and total garbage.

Couldn't agree more. I honestly think AC/DC is garbage, personally. They follow the same formula for basically every song, and the lead singer has an awful voice.

I'm trying to remember the name of one of their songs, all I remember is it has three powerchords as a riff and the lyrics are about being totally bad ass, any ideas? I suppose that will only limit it down to basically every song they have made.

Bruno Mars - Grenade was kinda sorta alright for what it is (ie, a pop song), but the rest is dire. Especially that song about him "running around in a birthday suit" and "letting it all hang loose". REALLY UNPLEASANT MENTAL IMAGE THERE, BRUNO. REALLY UNPLEASANT.

Lady Gaga. A few songs of hers are fun when I've had a few drinks (then again, so is Europop), but again, ditto Taylor Swift. Never really got the hype there.

These aren't artists I dislike in some way ('tis just a disclaimer because I know how fierce some fans - especially Zappa fans - can be), in some cases I even think they're OK, I just never considered myself a fan and am sick of hearing how much I should love love love love them.

I think YoungPunk is referring to sales. As you may or may not recall, in a previous thread they argued that artists get exactly what they deserve in terms of popular recognition. So equating sales with quality logically follows from that.

But Lemonade was the best-selling album of 2016 worldwide, so the criticism of it in this very thread doesn't make any sense 🤣
