That John Lennon Comp is cool if it's the one I'm thinking of. It may be controversial but I've never once felt the need to check out any of his albums though I really like the comp.

                          Great thread.

I second the absurdity to give someone a hard time for putting a comp on their overall. Some artists just don't have great albums, yet are still great. Comps are for them. Sometimes the comp really is better than any single album the artist released.

Furthermore, I'd totally agree that sometimes the best comps are live albums.

I like all those acts you named, and their greatest hits albums are awesome. But a few of them also have albums that are worthwhile to have the whole thing. I have full albums by Squeeze, Mott the Hoople and Madness that are pretty good albums. Kinks also.
I don't think I ever listened to an Elvis album until one day I just felt like buying some music by the old 50s rock and rollers. And I think I bought Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Brenda Lee, Gene Pitney and a few others I can't remember. And I grabbed an Elvis one called I Was the One. And I liked it more than I thought I would. Especially the title song. It's still my favorite Elvis song. So then I bought a couple more Elvis like Sun Sessions. And I liked that one a lot too. I Was the One and Sun Sessions were compilations too but not like a big huge career spanning compilation. They were more like specialty albums. So this would probably a be a good one for me to hear.

Since in the 50s and 60s, soul, R&B and blues were singles genres, and the producers/artists for the most part weren't trying to make album statements, compilations are often necessary. Even as Sly Stone, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and P-Funk fought to reverse this mindset, it continued to an extent in the 70s and beyond.

James Brown is a top 3 artist for me, and even though the first Live at the Apollo proved to the music industry that R&B albums were a viable business model, he's still primarily a singles artist, so a comprehensive compilation like this one is essential:

Tha1ChiefRocka wrote:

Because I like James Brown so much, I need at least 70 tracks worth to make me happy.

Star Time by James Brown

Some other justifiable compilations:
I LOVE (most of) their singles. Yet none of their albums would ever make my overall. I don't think they ever made a GREAT album.
Even better than hot rocks (for me) is the collection of The Stones Singles Collection from the 60s. But I LOVE all their albums from the 60s too. Even the really early stuff.
You include compilations for The Beatles, Zeppelin, The Doors, Bowie, Neil Young and The Pixies on your overall chart on this site, you're going to get some shit. That's just how it is. 😄 On the other hand, including Legend, which was a hugely popular comp., or one for Queen seems reasonable.

Not every band has hits, so best of's, obviously.

Edit: Sorry, I read the title of your post and not the actual question.

This album cut of "Tears Roll Down" is better than the original. Plus, they had some wonderful songs.

Because I like James Brown so much, I need at least 70 tracks worth to make me happy.

Then there are those bands that didn't quite achieve success in their time, but had a great compendium of their work issued later.
Elvis, now there is some debate on which compilation is the best, but for my money I'm gonna go with:
I always thought every album they released had at least a couple throwaway tracks that brought the album down. I prefer 40 licks.

Greatest hits albums do feel like cheating when ranking albums though.

While I love a lot of Stones' deep tracks what will never make it on a compilation, Hot Rocks is fantastic. Probably the best greatest hits collection ever, and a great way for people who don't want to dig deeper to really enjoy their biggest tunes.

Well, it's between Hot Rocks and CCR for number one greatest hits collection ever of all time. But I put CCR at number 1 and Hot Rocks at number two. But only because I couldn't decide. They're both so awesome.

Artists for whom I've been satisfied with a greatest hits collection, and prefer to an album catalog:

Marshall Crenshaw
Joe Jackson
Dusty Springfield
Petula Clark
The Carpenters
