How does anyone not agree that rating an album without hearing it at least once is horseshit? It's something that I did a few times early on in my BEA tenure, mainly voting low without listening to artists I couldn't stand and as OP said, it's immature. I've tried to correct that mistake for songs and albums I know I still haven't listened to and delete the rating though of course some ratings are low because that's what I genuinely think.

Or sometimes a band will have a preview on their website of the whole album.

I only vote for records that I own, have paid for, have listened to a couple of times. With rare exceptions, like records my wife owns, e.g. Thriller 😕
I currently work my way thru the 1001 Albums to listen to before death. And there are some real stinkers among them like Ministry or Joanna Newsom, albums that caused physical pain. But why should I bother to downrate them? I am sure it is my own loss that I am unable to appreciate their beauty.

I recently reset my ratings so I could start fresh, and now I'm only rating an album after I've given it a couple concentrated listens so I can feel really confident in my ratings. And even before that I only ever rated an album if I had heard it all the way through.

It's ridiculous to rate something without knowing what you're rating. I hope no one actually does that.

Rating albums you haven't heard is like judging a book by it's cover, right?

Curious as to what sparked this conversation.

Also one thing that's talked about in the past is when have you listened to an album you know enough to rate.

For me I use this site as a way to track what I listen to and as I listen to it (not only, but often enough), I rate it in that moment. Sometimes that's as I'm listening to it for the first time or sometimes I've listened to a new album 3 or so times, and then rate the album on the 3rd go around... probably something I could improve on: rate only after at least 3 or so listens - maybe a week or so of really listening to it... but then there's a pretty big part of me that's like - eh I ain't got time for that and I really don't want to spend 4 hours on an album I probably won't really like and then multiply that by 3000 or something...

Something I teeter on.

But to rate something without listening to it is a bit of a waste of everyone's time.

I always listen to an album completely before finalizing my rating (sometimes I get excited and rate while I'm listening, but so far I have always completed the album I am rating). I don't really care about my points, I'll get where I need to be eventually. I try to rate with precision, and cannot do that without completing the album.

I didn't vote because I found the question ambiguous.

I think it's stupid, but the BEA system does intrinsically encourage it - it's an easy way to get your ranking up so you can make decade charts etc. But it's even easier to add new albums if you want quick points, and that actually helps the site.

Yeah it sucks. The lowest rating I ever give is 70. If there's something I think is really awful, I just don't rate it at all simply because the most likely reason is that I have a dislike for that style of music or a dislike for that particular person. So what I would really be rating is the entire genre or my personal feelings about that artist. And that's just not fair. We're supposed to be rating the album itself, not the style or the person. So I just don't rate it at all because that would just be a shitty thing to do. I'm not sure it happens all that often around here though. Once in awhile I see something with a rating of 5 or 10 out of a hundred. But not really that often.
